Testing out lawn services for a small condo building. Our yard had become overgrown and Juan and his crew quickly came to the rescue. Our lawn looks great and the price was fair. I'm looking forward to working with them again.

Went above and beyond his duties. I had some fallen tree branches and a chainsaw that I didn't know how to operate and this kind hearted gentleman took the time to cut them up for me before he cut my lawn!! He ALWAYS accommodates my schedule for me and does those little extra things that make him so special!!

They are very reasonable and I really enjoyed meeting with them. In addition to what I was looking for, they offered me some free advice on helping a tree that was in pretty bad shape. I will be using Alvardo for all me tree services from now on.

Hugo and his crew have been a pleasure to work with. He has been prompt with all communications and was willing to work with us on options to meet our goals on price and projects. He weeded a substantial amount of our beds and overflow, trimmed trees (and even advised against trimming certain fruit trees until later in the season to preserve the vitality of the tree) and installed mulch. We are also using his crew to cut our lawn weekly. I am so glad to be working with Hugo and will be recommending him to anyone looking for lawn services.

GREAT experience with Razorback and Thumbtack! Hugh communicated via phone and text and his quote was very reasonable. Hugh came by this morning (nice guy btw) and using his grinding machine, he easily pulverized the stump and its roots at least 10"down in the ground. I live in Chicago and I was concerned the machine not fit thru our 36" gate. It did. Cool little machine! After grinding up the stump and roots, he filled the hole with grindings and cleaned up using a blower to remove any wood chips off the sidewalk and pavers. The wood chip grindings were very small and I utilized them for compost around my plants. I loved that tree. Below is one of the last pictures I have of it.

Working with David and Fabian was wonderful! They made our yard look beautiful! All of our neighbors have stopped by to let us know how great it looks. They worked within our budget and solved our problems! They removed unwanted trees, weeds, regraded, planted large trees, shrubs, perennials, edged, mulched. We are so happy with their work that we hope to continue using them for our yard maintenance!!

Juan cut down or tree and removed the stump. He was great! While he was there, we discussed some other landscaping issues and ended up hiring him to do some more things. He had some good ideas that helped us and did a great job for us at a reasonable price. Will definitely use him again if the need arises.

Top notch, professional, and knowledgeable. Gave excellent recommendations regarding thinning the property to allow for healthy growth of existing foliage, increased light exposure all while keeping the health of the trees in mind. I've had a natural wooded lot for 20 years and worked with numerous tree services; definately keeping their number. By far one of the best. Would highly recommend. Thanks guys. Randy.

I will definitely hire Haas Tree Service again. The crew, led by Matt, did a terrific job removing some small trees, pruning others, and cutting back large overgrown hedges. The front of the house basically looks transformed. The back yard was becoming a jungle. Not anymore. They also took care to do a thorough cleanup job—not a twig was left behind. Very satisfied with the professionalism and good cheer of these guys. Highly recommend.

The Tree Guys were right on time. They got to work as soon as they arrived. Took around 10 minutes for them to cut down the branches which is crazy! Very fun to see the tree actually fall down. Clean up was efficient.

I lost several trees in the front and on the side of my house because of heavy winds. I contacted My Secret Garden and explained I needed some kind of replacement for the trees. I explained that I knew very little about trees or landscaping and I needed help from someone who had knowledge and experience to help me decide how to take care of my problem Joni, from My Secret Garden stopped by the next day to see what could be done. She was a a fantastic source of information and know-how. I was so impressed with Joni I not only followed her suggestion for the tree replacement I also asked, and took her advice regarding shrubsand mulch for two other areas around the house. The work was completed in a timely manner the next week in a single day under Joni's direct supervision and all the debris removed. I am thrilled with the new look of my house which was not as expensive as I thought it would be, considering the ground preparation and resodding that also had to be done. Joni is a magician with plants and landscaping. I would recommend her for any job large or small to any of my friends or neighbors.

I had Kyle from Golden Tree out to take down a fairy large Maple in my backyard. He was eager to earn the job and offered a competitive quote with different price options depending on how much we wanted him to haul away and whether or not we required stump grinding. The guy was going to be a whopping 10 minutes later than he expected and was still courteous enough to let me know. He really wants to make sure his customer is in the loop and knows what’s going on every step of the way. They did exactly as they said they would and did a nice job of cleaning up as well. Can’t say enough good about how great Golden Tree worked out for us. A+ for sure!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
