Michael redid my bathroom baseboard trim and finished off my bare windows. He was very precise and meticulous with adding the casing around and inside the windows and was able to get my curled up vinyl bathroom floor smoothed out after adding some quarter round in front of my bathroom cabinet. The base board trim was also done very well. He is very detail orientated and take pride in his work. I would highly recommend him. Here is a picture of the windows ( unpainted in this pic) after and a picture of windows a few months ago (most recent pic)

Frank Landaverde installed a new tile floor in our kitchen and entryway, and he was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. I wish I could figure out a way to upload a picture here to show the results of his hard work: the grout goes wonderfully well with the tile, and he chose an arrangement for the tile that really works (we had three different colors). He and his associates really paid close attention to detail; the floor is flawless and beautiful. I really can't stop looking at it! Many thanks to Frank and his co-workers. We have had experiences with other contractors who did not follow through well, and Frank made every effort to meet our schedule; he even made special accommodations to ensure it was done on time. I can't believe how quickly and effectively they worked on this floor. I have to wish him and his small business all the best -- they will do well if they can keep up this level of service, and we will certainly hire them again in the future.

A-Team installed Rustic Hickory wood flooring in the entire main level of our home. We were planning this project for a few years and thus had built our expectations extremely high for the overall finished product. We continue to be very impressed with the job A-Team did, and look forward to hiring their skills in the future as we continue to remodel various areas of our home. Mike & Jocelyn B.

Tyler did two jobs for us, one tiling a three season porch floor, and another tiling a floor and shower (walls & ceiling) in a bathroom. He did a great job on both. He was professional and efficient, creative when we needed some help figuring out how exactly to approach a window in the shower, and both jobs look great!

Elite Construction (Daryl Kozbiel) completely gutted my 100-year old barn and made it into a fabulous entertainment area. He was conscious of maintaining the original look and feel of the structure. His work included roofing, siding, flooring, heating, A/C, plumbing and electric. In addition, he has done numerous repairs at my home. In all cases, his work was way above standard. His prices are very competitive and he is a man of his word. As an extra bonus, he is extremely personable and easy to work with. Basically, he met all deadlines and far exceeded my expectations. I have recommended him to others who were equally impressed and satisfied. I could not have been happier with his work and obviously, I highly recommend him. Eileen Marutzky

Justin refinished the hardwood floors in my old house. He also replaced several damaged boards so well that you can't tell the difference! The oil based finish he used gave my floors a gorgeous depth and a durable surface. Justin was fast, efficient, and thorough. He and his crew taped up the registers and sealed the doorways with plastic to keep dust to a minimum in the rooms they didn't work on. There was a little more sawdust left over than I would have liked, so I have to hold off on the fifth star, but overall he did a great job. I would strongly recommend Justin to anyone looking to bring an old floor back to life.

We used Taylor Wood Floors for our original, new home, install and were completely satisfied with their work – that was over 20 years ago. We used them again to do a refinish, we changed the stain color to give us a brand new look! Recently we had Taylor Wood Floors install new wood floors in two rooms that were carpeted. Love it –the ease of cleaning is wonderful! I will never go back to carpet again! I have and will continue to recommend Taylor Wood Floors. Where: Marshall, WI All went well, no improvements needed.

I got a very nice upstairs bathroom floor done, using luxury vinyl tile. Choice Floors had a number of different types of flooring available, and I was able to find the one that I needed. Considering that I let the previous floor decay longer than I should have, there was additional work to do to repair it, including removing and repairing some flooring outside of the bathroom (that's what happens when you let a floor leak for too long). Jason spent a day and half removing the old floor and putting in a nice new one that is pleasing to look at. Also, his price bid was much more attractive than the competitors' bids.

I hired Yankee Classic Flooring to install engineered wood flooring throughout the first floor of my 36 year old home. The company was recommended to me by both the interior designer I work with and the provider of the wood flooring product I purchased. I am very satisfied with their service, from the promptness of the original price quote to the professional and timely completion of the project. Jerry and Tracey were easy to work with, listened to my concerns and paid attention to every detail. The price quote was very reasonable and the project was completed in a timely manner by talented and hardworking installers. Jerry and Tracey oversaw the entire project and were available to answer any questions I had. The company also does other wood-related projects and I have hired them to install closet doors and wood trim in other rooms. I highly recommend Yankee Classic Flooring and would hire them again!

Our experience with Patrick and PJ Flooring was wonderful!! Patrick and his assistant Jose were very professional, pleasant, and hard-working. They removed our old tile and carpet and disposed of it for us. The installation of the hardwood went very smoothly and looks absolutely amazing!! Patrick is very respectful of any special requests--such as being sure to use plastic over doorways to reduce dust. (Although I believe that is standard procedure for him when installing hardwood.) I also requested matching hardwood electrical floor outlets and air vents which turned out quite beautiful and seamless within the hardwood. I would recommend not being in the house during the removal of the old floor if it is tile, because it is very loud. I would highly recommend Patrick and PJ Flooring without hesitation for anyone interested in high-quality, professional, beautiful hardwood floors. We absolutely love ours!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
