Doug did excellent work on my residential water and gas plumbing project. His work is clean and he obviously takes pride in it. He did a lot of little things that make the result exceed my expectations. For one, he installed spacers that reduce pipe rattle. He installed a winterizing drain that is easier to operate than what is often used. He also ensured that the gas work was done such that it would not reduce the supply to high consumption devices like my water heater and furnace. And to top it off, he went out of his way to accommodate my schedule. Overall, the visit was efficient, he was very professional, he is clearly an expert at his trade, and I am glad I trusted him with the project.

I would hire re-plumb again. Micah contacted me almost immediately after I posted my need for a new water heater. His bid was the lowest of 3 I received. He said he'd do the job at 3pm on Tuesday, he showed up at 3pm. He said it would take him about 2 hours, he did the job in 90 minutes. He gave me an exact price and that's what he charged me - no surprise charges.

This was an excellent experience! We live in an area that got flooded severely and couldn't find anyone local to install our new water heater. Everyone was either not accepting new jobs or booked for close to a month. I tried going through a big box store and the quote was more than the water heater. Then I tried Thumbtack and Waterbender was able to come sooner and install it for 1/3 the price. They even drove 2 hours each way to do it. Highly recommend!!!

When our water heater needed to be replaced, we went through the process of getting several quotes. I had just found the Thumbtack site a few days prior looking up Junk Removal sites, so I decided to try it out. We only got one quote from Thumbtack but it was the most appealing to us. While every other place gave one flat rate including cost of water heater, Burt's quote gave us the idea to purchase the water heater on our own and he would install it for a very reasonable hourly labor rate. This ended up working out very well since Home Depot lets you do a six-month no interest payment plan. Burt even offered in his quote to pick up the water heater for us but we were able to get it home on our own. I was very pleased that Burt gave me several references who all verified he is well-versed in plumbing and has quite a list of satisfactory jobs he has completed during his career. This gave us the confidence to move ahead. Burt arrived right on time and ready for work. He had every tool he would need to complete the job and even when he needed an additional part, he stopped the clock and picked it up on his own time. He did a wonderful and professional job of successfully installing the new water heater. He completed the job for us in a timely manner. He was very professional and friendly. Since he was also disposing of our old water heater for us, at an agreed upon rate he also took a couple old non-functioning small appliances we needed to dispose of but didn't want to pay the high Waste Management fees. Finally, although Burt is not a service plumber but explained his forte is rough plumbing, he even agreed to check our toilet and put in a new flush valve for us. I can't say more about how happy we are that we chose Burt to complete this job for us. In this day and age it can be hard to find trustworthy solid workmanship, but we did find that in Burt. We are happy to recommend him wholeheartedly. Thank you Burt, for a job well done.

I woke up on a weekend and found myself standing in water in my carpeted bedroom! All the plumbers I called could not come out until Monday, except for Andy's. They came right away, and found my water heater was leaking out the back. They quoted me a very good price and in just a couple of hours, they sourced a new water heater, installed it beautifully, and left everything clean and neat. Really nice people. I recently had a home inspection, and the gentleman remarked what a grear job was done on the install. I will call Andy's for ALL my future plumbing needs!

Koz plumbing not only did a thorough job. They fixed an outside water faucet that had broken over the winter and fixed a crack in the foundation that was a result of water freezing from the leak. They left the work area cleaned and even took some time to answer my questions about the battery backup to the sump pump and showed me an issue they discovered with the water heater. I am definitely calling them back to do some other work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
