A gutter pulled loose on my garage, was going to do the repair myself until I realized there was wood that was going to need to be replaced because of rot! Jeff gave me a reasonable estimate and was able to get the job done ahead of schedule. Will use him again in the future when the need arises!

We hired Jon and team to refinish our existing wood floor. They were wonderful to work with, honest and timely. Because we were happy with the refinishing we have hired them to install new wood flooring throughout the house. Tip - other side jobs needed? Ask Jon/team they may have expertise in other areas as well. Highly recommend.

Jeff installed new pergo floors, baseboard, stained and installed new oak doors and trim. He also rebuilt our stair system with all new oak and balusters. At this moment work is in the finishing stages, but here is a sample before and after.

Drywall and Mold Removal Was in the process of selling our house. The real estate agent noticed we had mold growing under the kitchen sink/cabinet, which I never knew. We contacted SteamaticWI which was recommended because they had experience removing mold. The assessor found mold in the basement rafters underneath the kitchen sink area as well, which had to be removed before the home inspection. The crew came in on a Saturday and removed all the kitchen cabinet mold and replaced the wood in the basement.Initially I was worried because the inspection was on Monday. They did not up-charge me for the emergency service and gave me a warranty to pass to the buyer. I really appreciate the quick response and service we received without being charged too much. I was asked to review Steamatic from their office support. I would recommend Steamatic to anyone in need of home improvement services. M Palmer-Milwaukee

Kevin does outstanding work! He is professional and every aspect of his work shows it. My husband and I have hired him several times. So far, we haven't found anything he can't do! He carpeted our family room, tiled our tub and bathroom floor, and put in a beautiful wood floor for us in the kitchen. We have had some horrendous experiences in the past dealing with unscrupulous contractors charging for their shoddy workmanship. We were ready to give up, when a friend recommended Kevin. So happy he did! We enjoyed working with Kevin. We asked him for some design suggestions and ended up going with his ideas! We love our new flooring! We will not hesitate to hire him again.

Our roof was an absolute horror. 92 years old, with 7 layers of shingles including the original wood shingles from 1924. Don't ask me why -- long story. Al's crew did an amazing job. Work was fast, efficient, on target and in budget. His calm, professional demeanor was especially appreciated, as were his problem solving skills (Needless to say, there were some unanticipated issues under a roof that was nearly 100 years old). I never felt like he was trying to SELL me anything - but rather trying to help. And help he did.

After 8 quotes for a fence from local fence companies and contractors, I came across thumbtack and figured I would give it a try. Almost immediately entering my info Joe reached out. I was immediately impressed with his professionalism and timely quote. He actually included the exact material quote showing exactly what materials along with how much everything cost. He was the clear winner. I was pretty specific with the timeframe, and he got it done. He stayed on budget as promised, and was great with communication throughout the project. Joe completed a 90+ foot privacy fence with a beautiful gate that crosses my driveway. I recommend Joe Mahas and Native Remodels without hesitation.

We got ourselves in to a bit of a quandary when we decided to begin what we thought would be a trivial tiling project in our 475 sq. ft. kitchen. After getting through about half of the 3-6 layers of existing vinyl flooring and related flooring materials installed over the past 40 years, we eventually found a half tar covered maple floor from when the house was built in 1918 buried beneath. It had at least 3 areas that were significantly damaged with missing planks and/or water damage. We knew it would take an experienced hardwood floor refinisher to restore this floor to its original beauty, yet couldn't afford to live without a kitchen for much longer. We spoke with a floor refinisher who did good work for us in the past, but he wasn't available for a while and made clear that he wouldn't be able to start the job until more demo work was complete. Therefore we did some research and found David's Thumbtack page which had before/after photos of circumstances that looked much like our own. After leaving a message with David, he promptly returned our call and scheduled an appointment to come take a look at the state of our floor. David didn't seem fazed by what appeared to us to be a significant restoration project. This was very reassuring. What impressed us right away was that we could tell David wasn't about taking shortcuts and would treat our home as if it were his own home. Using his versatile plumbing and carpentry skills, he also planned to remove an existing “island” with a sink before starting any work which though seemed daunting was the right thing to do to get the job done right. After assessing the amount of work needed, David put together a realistic timeline and cost estimate, which were very reasonable. After removing the kitchen island successfully without a hitch, David got right to work on repairing the problem areas of the floor. He did an amazing job integrating new hardwood, when necessary, with the old wood without making it too obvious to the eye. Once the repairs were complete, David worked diligently according to the agreed upon plan to refinish the floor in its entirety. He maintained continuous communication with us via phone and text which was very helpful during the length of the project. The restoration project is now complete and the floor looks beautiful. It's a true testament to David's expertise, diligence and attention to detail. Thank you for your excellent service David! Steve Z.

I used Affordable Interiors to put new wood floors on the first floor of my house and to remodel my kitchen. The work went smoothly and I love the end result! I really enjoyed working with Nick and all of his craftsmen as everyone was friendly, trustworthy and very efficient. Alan, the kitchen designer, was helpful when I struggled with decisions and even went to other sources to find tile and glass options for me! I know everyone talks about how long and painful remodels can be but I was very impressed with the fast pace that Nick and his team accomplished! I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them!

Jorge has so many talents, I ended up using him for most of a major house rehab. This was the sixth house I've rehabbed and it was great to have one contractor knowledgeable about so many things so I didn't have to wait on each specialty. Jorge drywalled, laid a wood laminate floor, put up baseboard, put in 2 toilets, ran plumbing and put in a new dishwasher, put up baseboard, ran a water line to the refrigerator, put in a new kitchen sink and countertop, leveled a wobbly ceiling fan, hung closet doors, as well as other things. He was there when he said he would be, worked until the job was done, and was pleasant to work with. I highly recommend him and will use him again.

We had Steve install a powder room in our basement in June of 2012. Framing, dry wall, door, tile floor, vanity, toilet, electrical, ceiling, exhaust fan, heater. From our first meeting, through the entire project, to completion, our experience could not have been better. Of the contractor's we had look at the job Steve was the only one who listened to what we wanted. He made suggestions and gave us options to think about but he listened and provided us with a bid for a project that was what we wanted. Steve was outstanding to work with, he communicated exactly what, when, why and how he was completing the work. He was on schedule, on budget, and extremely easy to work with. His work ethic, quality, and pride in his work shows in the finished project. He used a plumber, electrician a carpenter assistant, who are just as excellent as Steve. They have the same work ethic and pride that Steve has, communicate like Steve and are a pleasure to work with. Our finished project is excellent and exactly what we wanted. The entire process was no hassle. Steve handled all permits and details. He said it would be painless and it was. We have used Steve for another small project, had him inspect a home our daughter was buying and have recommended him highly to our friends. He is now bidding on some work at our daughter's new home. We believe that Steve is the best. Honest, friendly, does what he says he will do, when he says it will be done, with excellent quality. It is a treat to work with someone who is as good as Steve. It would not be possible for me give Steve a high enough recommendation. Work with Steve and you will not be sorry.

Joe came to our house the week of...(before) the Fourth of July to lay laminate (wood plank) flooring. Initially, he thought it would take 2 nights, but it ended up being 2 nights and one more day trip...which was fine with us. He was MORE than committed to the job and completing it. He was devoted to doing a good job and making sure we were happy. All in all, we are more than happy with him and his work. We would HIGHLY reccomend him!-for any job, big or small. We would definitely hire him again.

Everyone at Schnorenberg's was exceptional to work with. My first contact was with Matt. He contacted me immediately and came out to give us a quote on the work we wanted to have done. The ladies at the store were patient with me when I was trying to decide which flooring to go with. The cost was reasonable for the work that was completed. We love our new vinyl tile kitchen flooring. We will definitely have Schnorenberg's complete more work in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
