Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

I am a single father of 3 boys young boys and I am busy working 10 to 12 hours a day. The house was a manly mess but they did an excellent job cleaning the house from top to bottom. Everything looks great now and I look forward to them coming back to keep the house looking the best it can.

These cleaners took their time and did a really good job on my house. They cleaned spots I didn’t even notice were bad until they were clean! There were a few spots I wish I would have asked them to clean but I didn’t think about until they left. I would recommend telling them exactly what you are wanting done and they will take care of it!

If I could rate this company with 0 stars I would... we hired this company back in October to do a deep cleaning on our house as we had renters in it for 4 years and my husband recently retired from the Navy so we were moving back into the area and wanted a clean home to move back into. We told Retta that our household goods were coming on Tuesday and needed the house cleaned by Monday. She assured us that it would not be a problem. She called us in the morning to inform us that she would be late due to people calling in. She then called us when she arrived at our home as we were traveling from MI to be at our house upon completion of the job. We arrived in town around 3:30. We then received a phone call from Retta telling us that she had to leave the job early because she had an emergency come up and the girl that rode with her to our house did not have a car so she also had to bring her with her. I asked her if she was going to be able to come back and finish the job as our household goods were coming at 8:30 in the morning the next day. She said she would try to get someone there but could not promise it, she then talked about how she had other job the next day but that she could possibly come in the afternoon or on Wednesday to finish. I Told her that would not work as we previously discussed I wanted our house cleaned before we brought all of our household goods into it as it was rather dirty from our renters. We then waited a couple of hours and my husband called her back only to find out that she was unable to find anybody to come and finish the job that evening. This was a huge inconvenience as we had no cleaning supplies and one-year-old twins who are tired from traveling and have nothing to do in a house with nothing in it. We had to put them in a playpen as the house was very dirty and we did not want them crawling around in it. So we cleaned the house which took us about 4 hours and that was just to get it move in ready. Retta then called us about a week later, to tell us how very sorry she was and that she would like to come and do a cleaning for free to make it up to us. So we gave her another chance as we do have a heart and wanted to understand that emergencies do happen. So we set up for her to come and clean our house on 22 November the day before Thanksgiving. We had company coming for Thanksgiving and wanted our house in tiptop shape before our guests arrived. Her cleaning company was supposed to arrive at 12 o’clock, at 12:30 when they had not arrived my husband called to see what was going on, REtta informed my husband that she was going to call and see where her cleaning crew was. My husband finally received a phone call back from her at 2:45 with numerous excuses as to why her crew never made it. She then stated to my husband, “your house just isn’t going to get clean unless I do it myself. I’ll tell you what I’m going to give you a call after the holidays to set something up .” I then sent her a message through thumbtack asking what was going on and she informed me that she spoke with my husband and would be giving us a call on Monday. It is now Saturday and we have not heard one thing from Retta. She is not only the worst cleaning company we have ever dealt with but she is the worst company we have ever dealt with. We have traveled the world and lived in many places being in the military and she is by far the saddest excuse for a business. You are better off doing the job yourself or hiring a true professional that keeps their word because she is the farthest thing from a professional.
