I went to her facility and it has indoor. & outdoor areas and a huge agility course that we did too, after training. My dog listened immediately to her and now she is showing me how to get the same results all the time. She really enjoys helping you. Nice lady. We are going back.

As a first time dog owner I have learned that the process to a well behaved dog is the training of both the dog AND the owners. Our rescue one year old Birder Collie/Australian Shepard mix was pretty well behaved indoors and in our yard but had a very aggressive issue when meeting new digs and people. He could not be trusted to not bite either. After one session with Lynn and homework he was 100% better. After the second session I have little fear of having a problem. Buddy still needs some work however the change has been dramatic. Lynn comes to your home with written plans and homework assignments. Hire Lynn, you will not be disappointed. Jeff Wadsworth

Here is a little history, we adopted a tree walker coonhound from a shelter in Tennessee and brought him home to Wisconsin. The first month was ok as we all got adjusted to each other. There were counter surfing, mouthing and dominance issues from the beginning. We knew we had a stubborn ALPHA, ALPHA male but we were working through it. The dog and I had an altercation over a rawhide where he became very aggressive and tried to bite me. From that day forward he would try to attack me unsolicited any time he saw me or heard my voice. It got so bad I would have to lock myself in a room so my wife could let him out. I am 6',1" tall and 220 lbs, this is the first time in my life with all the dogs I've owned that I was afraid of a dog. We talked to many behaviorist's whom all said we should just rehome the dog and had no answers for us. I was determined not to give up and make things work because I knew that this was a good dog deep down inside. That is when I was recommend to Shelly at "Hair of the dog that bit ya". I got a great feeling from her right away on the phone and was intrigued by her explanation of how she handles her training of dogs (it was a much different approach from what I was hearing from everyone else). This is a large breed hunting dog who is aggressive and she knew exactly how to handle it. She came out the very next morning to a situation where everyone in the house was uneasy and afraid of this dog who now was in total control of the situation. Long story short after two hours Shelly had broken the dog had him taking commands from both my wife and myself. We felt like we had our lives back and believe it or not the dog seemed happier that he now knew the pecking order. This was truly a Christmas miracle for my entire family. The picture attached is from the same day where that morning my dog wanted to kill me and what he was like by the afternoon! I cannot thank Shelly enough and I am so excited for our new life together with Bohannon. Todd & Shelly Bloom

My dog Pixie and I have been working with Michelle for the last few months, and it has been life changing! Pixie's habit of jumping on people, pulling hard on the leash during walks and her reactivity to dogs (and bunnies!) were all making it difficult to have fun and enjoy my dog. Within 5 minutes of meeting my dog, Michelle had Pixie listening and focused on her, and following all the basic commands she gets too excited to follow around new people! It was so impressive! Michelle is always professional, and always willing to spend whatever time the dog and owner need during that session to introduce and practice new things. She is great about answering questions and giving homework that really reinforces the training. We have worked on door manners, greetings, walking easily on leash and her reactivity to dogs and bunnies! It really is like having a new dog! All with positive reinforcement (no awful shock collar!). And the best part, Michelle is teaching me how to be a better friend to my dog, by helping me pay better attention to Pixie's reactions to the world around her. I plan on getting another dog in the future, and I will definitely have Michelle at Peak train my new baby as well! (Picture is of Pixie in a down-wait with treats on feet)

My 3 dogs look and smell great after getting groomed here. One of my dogs is part Schnauzer and we always get him a schnauzer cut, which isn't easy to do, I've been told. She did outstanding. I also have a yorkie who was dealing with an injury and she was able to work with him. After a bad experience at PetCo and having visited multiple dog grooming facilities, I am beyond pleased and satisfied with my experience at Deja Vu's K-9 Corner. I will be going back to get my dogs groomed here.

Before we met Anna, my wife and I were ready to surrender our dog Zoey to the Washington County Humane Society. Zoey destroyed many things in our home to include bedsheets, comforters, sofa cushions, draperies, shoes, shirts, a recliner, four leashes and three pet harnesses, and that's not the complete list. Zoey was unable to walk with anything other then a 15' cable. She exhibited intense stress, fear, and anxiety. It was so bad that she would pull, tug, and bite on my carhartt jacket. ( thanks for making such a durable jacket carhartt! Lol). It was literally a tug a war every time we tried to take her out for exercise. Anna, discovered, and taught us so many valuable things about Zoey's condition that we were able to come up with a plan of how to work with in Zoey's comfort levels and now Zoey walks with a leash not a cable! She walks right next to my leg with plenty of slack in the leash, she does not exhibit any signs of anxiety anymore. I believe It is realistic to say Anna saved Zoey, not only from going back to the humane society but due to Anna's experience, education, and knowledge with dog psychology, dog behavior, and her understanding of the breeds; how they act and react in social situations, all this gave Zoey a better more calm and fulfilling life. I call Anna the "Saint of Dogs", and I think she has earned this title in the way she genuinely cares for and about animals and how they interact and coexist with humans. I strongly recommend Anna to everyone in need of dog obedience training and behavior modification training for their four legged friends. Sincerely, James & Aly Krieser

I did board and train with my girl Lucy. It was pricey but it was the best money I ever spent on my dog. I have been to 2 other trainers prior to meeting Kristi. She really helped me with Lucy wanting to drag me on walks and bark and lunge at other dogs and people. I now enjoy walks. If you want training from Canine Composure just bite the bullet and do it. Not only did she fix my dog but she also really helped me.

Mary has watched our two dogs Dakota and Tucker numerous times and has stayed with them overnight. Mary has always been extremely reliable and enjoyed watching our dogs; she is very knowledgeable when it comes to animals behaviors. I totally trust Mary with our dogs and I highly recommend her to watch your animals. Mary is also always punctual and very communicative to let us know how our dogs behaved while we were away. Our older dog Dakota also has a mean streak every now and then that Mary knew how to handle and was extremely patient with Dakota for which our family is thankful.

Jennifer is a great trainer, very insightful in the ways that dogs think and feel. My dog and I have attended training classes before, but there were a few behaviors I wanted to work on. Working one on one and at home is great, as there are less distractions than working in a large class. In all a very positive experience for my dog and I; he gets rewarded for his good behavior and I'm less stressed because he's doing what I want him to do! Jennifer's positive reenforcement methods are easy to learn and work great!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
