FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Lessons can be scheduled individually or in a series. A series of lessons is scheduled by the month for 30, 45 or 60 minutes weekly at a reserved lesson time. Lessons are billed monthly; payment for a new series of lessons is due at the first lesson of the new month. Tuition is $40 per 30 minute lesson, $55 per 45 minute lesson and $70 per 60 minute lesson. If you'd like to schedule lessons at larger intervals, tuition is $45 for a 30 minute lesson, $60 for 45 minutes, and $75 for 60 minutes. A sliding scale is available upon request. Payment can be made by cash or check.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to chat with a new student or parent via e-mail or phone to get a sense of what the goals of our lessons will be and which materials will best create a fun, stimulating lesson environment. I like to get to know a little bit about the interests of the student in case there are any common themes that would be useful in explaining musical concepts. During the first lesson, we continue this conversation while we explore playing the flute - from making a first sound to digging into an exciting piece of music. Based on the needs of the student, we'll explore strategies for improving performance and maximizing home practicing so that the student can start developing his or her own abilities of self motivation. Most important, I want to keep the learning process fun and relevant to the student.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my masters of music from the University of Minnesota and bachelors degrees in music and English from Drake University. Each year I attend workshops and master classes with master teachers to continue my own development as a performer and teacher. I'm also a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, a method that helps people learn to move with less tension and more freedom - very useful for flutists! In addition to my musical training, I'm a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, a method that helps people learn to move with less tension. I've found this work to be transformative for my own playing and I'm happy to offer my students tools to help them play with as much ease and comfort as possible.
