Introduction: My name is Goh, and I'm a drummer based in NYC since 2008.
Drawing from my teaching experience of over a decade, my years of study with some of the best teachers at top conservatories, and most importantly, the knowledge I've accumulated from being in the trenches of NYC (and abroad) as a freelancer, I'm available to take your drumming skills to the next level. Whether you're starting out, picking the sticks up after a long hiatus or tired of being stuck on a plateau, I'm confident I have the tools to help you out.
I believe in custom lessons tailored to individual goals and learning styles, while developing a strong foundation in the basics which include studies in technique and reading. I also believe that we should practice applying these techniques in musical contexts as soon as possible, and am a big fan of learning and playing along to songs. Most importantly I believe that music is about having fun.
We're all in this together. Let's get to work.
The honest truth is that sometimes drumming can be challenging, and students need to invest a certain amount of time to master certain patterns.
When I see the joy and excitement that a student feels from conquering challenging tasks, I really feel like I am making difference. The only time I don't mind saying "I told you so" is when a student pleasantly surprised him or herself by overcoming self doubt.
I also believe that being a drummer can be like having a really cool secret identity - like having an alter ego. It's really gratifying to see students, especially shy and self-conscious ones, come out of their shells and really go for it in beast mode. I think there is a certain confidence that we all earn from working hard to achieve goals, and I hope my students can continue to take that with them wherever they go.
