My daughter started learning from Alla from the beginning about 2 years ago at the age of 7. Alla comes from a traditional Russian background and knows her stuff. If you are looking for Suzuki method, she is not the teacher for you. She teaches according to how she was taught and believes is correct and while I may not have understood her methods, I have learned to trust them and trust her judgment. For example, she didn't let my daughter touch the bow for months, and even when she did, she didn't allow her to do so unsupervised by her. She focused on the left hand and didn't use tape to learn where the notes are. I felt like some things were hammered for a while and then my daughter would take off on them. When we meet up with an older cousin and she sees where my daughter is after 2 years, she says, "Wow. I didn't do that for a long time." One thing about Alla if you are considering her as a teacher is that she is sometimes gone because she performs around the world. That means there are gaps in teaching throughout the year...usually in the summer. I don't mind this as it gives us a break and also because she stays fresh as a violinist. She is also readily available on Skype to give lessons when she is a away and while this sounds strange to us uninformed folks, she is remarkably able to correct and teach even online. While Alla expects excellence, she is very patient and understands that kids are kids. She has stuck through and motivated my daughter when it got tough. She's very warm and caring...but she does expect you to do things the way she taught you! Alla is very generous and giving. She even came with us to Dan Lawrence Strings in Lee's Summit to pick out an amazing violin that I know we wouldn't have gotten without her there. One thing I would like more of are recitals. We've had 2 over the past 2 years. However, for now, I'm glad for the foundation my daughter is getting and trust there will be more opportunities to perform in the future. Kansas City is lucky to have Alla here as a violin teacher and recognized performer and I hope you will hire her so that she'll have reason to stick around!
