Introduction: Gina Kirkland, based in Los Angeles, California, is a Humanist Celebrant available for wedding ceremonies, life celebrations, and naming ceremonies that reflect Humanist principles. She offers her services in the Southern California area and is also available to travel to your location. Her primary goal is to help two persons celebrate their love in a way that respects their identities and wishes by offering guidance and advice in the options available through language, ceremony, traditions, and modern twists on traditions. She takes great joy in helping people celebrate the joys and transitions of life in a way that respects their intentions and allows them to enjoy their special day fully. I LOVE love and helping people celebrate theirs. I also offer life celebrations (funeral services) and naming ceremonies for babies to celebrate all of the most important transitions in life. I am passionate about Humanism (Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.) and enjoy working with same sex and opposite sex couples alike. I also am happy to work with religious couples who prefer a non-religious ceremony.

Gina always exceeded our expectations. We first met with her in a coffee shop where she presented my fiancée (now wife!) Christine and me with a variety of great ideas for a ceremony. They were so amazing that Christine cried. Under Gina's careful guidance, we spent the next few weeks tailoring a ceremony that would be a reflection of both our personalities and our families. We met with Gina again and she walked us through the big day. It felt very special and Christine cried. Gina then worked with us individually on perfecting our vows. Before we knew it our wedding day arrived. All of our friends and family were in town so we didn't sleep much the night before and our minds were also filled with very important questions like, "Are the basil leaves for the signature cocktails going to wilt?! Is the DJ going to play a song that Grandma Sue can dance to?! Should we have gone with highball glasses instead of old fashioned glasses?!" Turns out none of that matters; with so much going on and the nerves flowing it was easy to forget that the only thing that really mattered was the ceremony. It's the reason everyone showed up! Thankfully Gina was our rock. She was so prepared, so organized, and so calm that the ceremony could only go perfectly. It did and we all cried.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a celebrant with the American Humanist Association and have gone through training to perform weddings, commitment ceremonies, naming ceremonies, and life celebrations. Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

As more and more people leave religion there has become a need for secular people to have traditions and celebrations that still honor the important transitions in life. I wanted to be a part of creating secular community and love being a part of these important life celebrations.
