Introduction: I take great pride in the fact that I have always wanted to teach people how to sing to the best of their abilities ever since I began my training. I am dedicated and have never given up on a student. I have studied with multiple voice teachers who are all professionals of a high caliber within the operatic industry granting me a wide range of tools I use to help my students sing better. I have a Bachelors of Music and a Masters of Music in vocal and opera performance giving me a solid amount of training and experience to pass on to my students. I not only teach opera and classical singing, but also pop, jazz, and rock. My philosophy is: as long as it's executed in a healthy manner, let's go for it! I enjoy getting that 'lightbulb' moment from a student. When something clicks in a student's head and singing becomes so much easier and more fun for them is what I love as a teacher. I also thrive on the problem solving aspect by finding unique ways to describe singing that might better suit a particular student - there are a thousand different ways to say the same thing and that matters in voice lessons. Ultimately, I thrive on making singing easy and fun for the student because if it's not it's going to be a hard time for the student and it will show in his or her singing, so why not make it enjoyable? A happy student makes a happy voice!

I was paired with Alec as my voice teacher through a vocal pedagogy workshop through my university's choir. I only managed to work with him a few times due to scheduling conflicts, but nevertheless every meeting was a massive step forward due to his hard work. I had little to no formal voice instruction before, and he started me off with a number of breathing exercises and improving other physical variables such as posture and position of the mouth. He strove to clarify any sort of abstraction through relatable metaphor, which was very helpful to me. We later moved to scales, particularly focusing on chest voice. I had before always sung Bass II; he showed me how my register actually sat quite higher, and with the breathing he taught me managed to extend my comfortable range a good deal. Throughout it all he was supportive and encouraging, and I wish I had more time working with him.

Alec is a great teacher he held my daughter work through a rough patch that she was having with her vocals and she became a stronger vocalist because of it. Alex lessons were unique and catered just for my daughter where he pushed her when he needed to and he was always honest about where she was as a vocalist. Alex gave her creative techniques to improve her diction, her range, clarity and her note holding ability. Alex is very flexible and easy to work with and he let you know his expectations and ask what your expectations are from there are no surprises with Alex and that is very comforting when working within a budget. Alex has a plan to fit your budgetary needs very easy to work with. Above all else Alex is very professional and he added an additional element to his lesson he met my daughter at the door with the beginning of every lesson and he also walked her to the door at the end of every lesson -very professional, very gentlemanly!

My daughter has had an interest in musical theater ever since she was little, and has recently expressed a desire to expand her vocal capabilities, in order to enhance her level of performance. Through working with Alec, she has learned a great amount of technique, while working on developing a mature yet enjoyable repertoire. Alec is an extremely knowledgeable musician and instructor, maintains an attitude of professionalism and amicability and is flexible in regards to scheduling lessons. He is wonderful at providing motivation and encouragement to his students, while challenging them to grow as musicians. Even though my daughter has only been taking lessons with Alec for a few months, I have already witnessed a tremendous improvement in her singing as well as confidence in her performing. I would highly recommend Alec to any interested vocal student!

It is a privilege to write this recommendation for Alec Feiss. Alec has been employed as the Tenor Section Leader at Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Westport, since September 2016, where I am the organist-choirmaster. He is doing an outstanding job for us. Alec ably leads the tenor section in the full choir, sings in the professional quartet, and sings solos as needed. Alec is a fine tenor with a solid vocal technique. He uses his voice wisely and well. These are attributes one seeks in a voice teacher. Alec is the consummate professional, and his work ethic is unquestionable. He is totally reliable and punctual. Best of all, he has a good attitude, works hard, and exceeds expectations. Alec Feiss is by far the best singer and teacher I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He's patient, kind, and very supportive. I feel very comfortable when taking lessons with him. He also uses visual descriptions and metaphors to help you understand what you should be doing with your body to get the sound you're looking for. I'd recommend Alec to anybody who wants to learn how to sing. A+

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
It really depends. If I drive I usually add a little more to the lesson total for the use of my car, but if the student comes to my studio then the rate remains unchanged.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When meeting a new customer, I like to give a trial lesson: this is usually a shorter amount of time and less-expensive. I do this make sure I get to know the student's goals and where the vocal experience lies. This helps me get an idea of where to start the lesson process - every voice is different and should be treated thusly! What usually happens is that we touch on breathing and how to relax the muscles located near the voice box. But of course, this all depends on where the student's experience lies.
