Introduction: I teach voice and piano lessons to students of all ages and experience levels. I seek to create a nurturing, encouraging environment for my students. I want to help each student deepen their curiosity and love for music while simultaneously empowering and equipping them with skills to achieve their musical goals. Lessons are tailored to meet your individual interests and goals. In voice lessons, the basis of our work will be helping you discover your freest, most efficient sound with healthy vocal technique while exploring and balancing he systems of breath, phonation (creating sound), resonance (sound quality), and articulation (formation of vowels and consonants). We also work on sight singing and performance preparation. Piano lessons include study of the instrument through repertoire and technique, in addition to reading music and learning music theory. Lessons are fun-filled and varied with age-appropriate and activities/games to aid learning goals.

I took voice lessons with Joannah when she was in Boston and there were a few things that I particularly loved about her teaching manner. First, she's knows a lot about the anatomical aspects of the voice and air support systems, and she brings that into the lesson to explain how singing works and how to sing healthfully. I really appreciated this expertise and transparency about how the body makes sound. Second, Joannah has a very open and non-judgmental approach to her teaching. I always felt comfortable with her trying my best, even if it took a little while to get the sound we were looking for. And finally, Joannah herself is a very talented musician - she has a beautiful voice to listen to and is an inspiration to be around.

How did you get started doing this type of work?
Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. In the evenings after listening to my mother teach piano lessons to a studio full of students, I would climb into her lap and beg her to teach me to play the piano. I eagerly soaked up everything that she taught me, enthralled by this incredible language of music. I continued studying piano with my mom all the way through high school, adding much-anticipated voice lessons in high school as well. We came from such a small town that we had to travel two hours round trip for my weekly voice lessons. Thus began my journey!
