My experience working with Brian and his team was tremendous. After soliciting bids from several contractors to repair and improve our backyard fence, I knew Clear Choice was the right vendor for the job. Brian's candor and transparency was critical in my selection and he didn't disappoint. The work was done to our specifications and exceeded our expectations. In fact, our neighbors saw the job they did and requested that they get to work on their fence too. Thanks so much!

I find them to do very good work. They are honest, clean up after themselves, and are all one could wish in a contractor. Edmonds Home is very flexible and able to do many different kinds of jobs quite well. It is like giving a honey do list to someone you can trust. Prices are reasonable for the work performed.

Curtis Dycus (Dycus Construction) is the real deal. After my wife and I moved to Madison last year and bought our home, we started several construction projects. After building a detached, two-story garage, landscaping the front and back yards, and renovating our main home, I can say that I have had some "interesting" experiences with local contractors; late starts, (EXTREMELY) missed suspenses, and several broken promises, to name a few. That's why Curtis was a breath of fresh air! He quoted us very reasonable prices, showed up on time, met his suspenses, and actually did more work than we expected (paid attention to detail). Bonus: he cleaned up after himself (all the others left me with sawdust, debris, and cigarette butts)! Curtis is our guy! I would personally recommend him for any work that you need to have done, and that's not just grading on the curve. I can't say enough good things about this guy to let you know how pleased we are that we found him. Tim M. Madison

We purchased our home 11 years ago as a 'fixer upper'. Though out the years we have worked with several contractors. Of all the contractors we've ever worked with, All Aspects Painting and Home Repair are the most professional company we've ever worked with. Their prices are reasonable and their attention to detail is impeccable! The cabinets and flooring in our kitchen looks great. Their work superceded my expectations. Chris was even nice enough to help me with some small DIY projects. They showed up bright and early and on time every single day. They also cleaned their work area before leaving every afternoon. I would recommend this company to anyone and everyone without any hesitation. Thanks so much guys. We're looking forward to our next project and working with you again!

Working with Advanced Roofing Solutions was a positive experience. They presented a detailed, precise description of the repair of the subdivision's fishing pier. The work was begun and completed at the agreed upon time. To make the repair even more professional, a contractor was present at the job site at all times. The result was a well built, attractive fishing pier. I will recommend that the HOA continue to use their services. I, myself, will use them for projects in my home

Bentley Parks of BP Construction was the general contractor for all work following black-in of my house. This included plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, tile showers, tile flooring, hardwood flooring, and t&g ceiling. He and his selected a group of subcontractors did good to excellent work and were flexible and helpful as we worked through the many details that always come to mind of home owners as work progresses. As a new company, BP Construction needed the final payments on his very competitive bid up front to complete all contracted work. Mr. Parks kept his commitments and corrected punch list issues well after being paid in full. With us, he has earned his reputation for seeing a job through to a successful conclusion.

I honestly don't know how to summarize, how awesome a job these guys did. They are in a league above the rest for sure. They had to step in about 1/2 way through our sun room addition project because our first contractor was taking forever (7 months in on a 1 month project). They fixed issues from the first contractors sub-par job without asking me for more money. They showed up, on time, everyday they said they would. If they weren't coming one day, Keith the owner would always make sure we knew why they wouldn't be there that day (mostly because of waiting on material we ordered). They did an excellent job and their quality and attention to detail is among the best I have ever seen. My only regret is that we didn't start with them from the beginning. Their prices are fair and they will do an awesome job for you too. Hire these guys, you won't regret it.

Mike is an awesome contractor!! He and his partners are so nice and they're very honest. When we ran into some hidden issues in our laundry room and bathroom, the we're up front with us and didn't want to do a shady job and told us exactly what needed to be done to do it right and keep us from having to fix it down the road. They are VERY reasonably priced and do fantastic work. I have truly enjoyed having them in my new home and getting to meet and cut up with them all. I will definitely hire them for future projects. My mother is even going to hire them for her projects! Two thumbs up and 5 stars to Mike and his crew!!

We had a new construction home and James Lewis was an authorized dealer/installer of Onyx products for our 2.5 bathrooms. He installed a custom walk in shower and a double vanity top in our master bathroom. He installed Onyx vanity tops in the other two bathrooms. The fit and finish work in the walk in shower met all our expectations. His attention to detail was exceptional. James Lewis was courteous and willing to work with our ideas. We were pleased with his workmanship and skill. We gladly recommend James Lewis if you want to hire a professional you can trust.

The work was completed in a timely manner and we were satisfied with the results. Mr. Fikes will become a successful contractor as he continues to grow and learn.

Roof Tech was originally hired to do a small project of finishing and painting my laundry room walls. The job was so beautifully completed with an extra touch of air freshener added to the paint so that my house did not have the paint odor, that I talked to him about applying my backsplash once the cabinets were installed. I also talked to him about a roof and door issue that we had been having for years. Both estimates far exceeded my expectations and the work was performed in a very meticulous, professional, and timely manner. His crew were very respectful and professional. They were on time and cleaned up after ward, including going over our yard several times with a magnet to pick up loose nails. Mike Raby is a pleasure to work with. He's very professional and takes obvious pride in the end product/job. I could not ask for a better contractor to work with. He gave advice when needed and displayed integrity, knowledge and concern in our satisfaction of the completed job. My husband and I will definitely be hiring him again for future projects. And we highly recommend him and his company to friends neighbors and strangers. We truly appreciate Mike.

Sharon listened to what I needed and she took the initiative to begin studying my artwork and my home...then she began hanging the artwork I had recently purchased, of course after discussing her suggestions with me. Sharon made additional suggestions regarding accessories. .. I needed someone who could take into consideration my wants etc., yet take charge and jump right in. We have plans to continue working together on further design ideas.

It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of Kim Johnson. Recently, I hired Kim’s company to restore my damaged roof, garage and the front of my home after a recent storm in July 2015. Once Kim appeared on site and after the initial introduction, she immediately gave me a detailed breakdown of the damages to my home and showed me the additional damages that the Insurance Company completely disregarded; causing the insurance’s companies previous estimate of my home to increase once they revisited my home with Kim present. In addition, I was very impressed with Kim’s enthusiasm, communication skills and professional demeanor. During the entire restoration, Kim consistently demonstrated nothing less than exceptional knowledge and very competent regarding her product and showed diligence and dedication to finishing the work in time. Also, Kim remained closely involved in overseeing the project from start to finish. The quality of work done was consistently top notch. Her contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized cost. In closing, I am very pleased with the final product which Kim was instrumental in completing. I am extremely impressed with her work. In a world where sloppy workmanship and poor service are unfortunately all too common, Kim is indeed a rare find. Therefore, I took this unprecedented step of writing a letter of recommendation for Kim because I believe that exceptional work should be recognized. I would not hesitate to hire Kim again, or to recommend her to my friends and neighbors. I heartily endorse Kim. Fred Fletcher A very satisfied homeowner

Chris and his company installed a new metal roof on my father's home for us. They were professional, courteous and timely. It'sgood to see that there are still contractors that are willing to help and not just after your money.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
