Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

Samantha helped me out with a deep clean after moving into a new house and did a fantastic job. She was responsive, flexible with my schedule, right on time, and most importantly, did a great job at a very thorough clean. Excited to work with her more in the future on regular cleanings!

Camille (and her staff) was amazing! They worked incredibly hard on a deep clean of the house, and our home is sparkling! I have had other local cleaners before, and Camille is by far the most thorough. I look forward to using her again!

Our house looks and smells absolutely amazing! I'm so happy I went with Lucy's housekeeping and will use her services again. The value of her service is outstanding and her team is very detail oriented. I tend to be obsessive when it comes to cleaning my house and I felt relaxed after her team completed the job.

Royal team was extremely responsive and professional. I needed same day cleaning, and they were able to come through. I will say, compared to other cleaners in the area, it was pretty pricy. For 2400 sqft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath house my total came to $405, and it needed only a moderate clean. Max I have seen for this was $250 with other companies. 1 bedroom didn’t even need cleaning, just vacuumed. When they left, I noticed a lot was missed upstairs. I would recommend only if you’re in a time crunch and can’t find anyone else to clean last minute!

I hired K&J to do a one-time deep clean a rental house after the tenant moved out. Additionally I opted for the refrigerator cleaning, oven cleaning, and interior window cleaning. K&J were very responsive and arrived on time at the property and left after a couple hours. I walked through the property later that evening and was pretty disappointed overall. The refrigerator looked brand new (100% recommend) but most everything else looked half cleaned. For example you could tell the blades of the fans were dusted but they didn’t do a good job as there were still clumps of dust albeit fewer than before. The floor had hair and grass and didn’t appear to be swept. The oven looked half scrubbed. I was disappointed and texted K&J. One of the ladies came back that night and spent another couple hours cleaning. The kitchen looked much better after she left but I didn’t notice any other difference. My wife and I ended up spending cleaning floors, baseboards, fans, and windows after K&J. Maybe my expectations are too high but I would not recommend their one time deep clean package. I do however think they’d do a good job regularly maintaining an already clean house. They were kind and super responsive to texts.

The finished product of the work was decent, but I had several issues along the way. First, there was supposed to be a walk through prior to the cleaning that we reserved time out of our schedules for. When contacted, we were told that they had forgotten and that the walk through would no longer take place. Prior to the cleaning, we discussed pricing and what would come with the service. We were told that there would be 3 to 4 cleaners, but only two were there for the cleaning. As a result, the number of labor hours we actually received vs what was indicated was lower than what we anticipated. Despite this, the price didn't deviate from the original quote. I do recognize that the two spent some additional time past the anticipated 4 hours (30-45 mins), this still doesn't account for the total 4-8 hours of labor that would have taken place given additional persons. When the topic of the number of cleaners and reduction in labor hours was addressed, they became extremely defensive (note that the topic was broached in an entirely non-aggressive fashion). The counterargument was as follows: 1) despite receiving less hours of labor than promised, they were working harder than usual 2) one of the two was even breaking a sweat 3) the house was more dusty than anticipated 4) had she known how dusty the house was, she would have increased the price to $0.12 per square foot 5) their cleaning was on a higher level of quality than others. I prefer to separate facts from emotion, so here are my counterarguments to each argument: 1) There would be no need to work harder had we been given the promised quantity of laborers. In addition, there is no tangible way to determine whether this statement is true or accurate. I have no baseline on which to base their standard level of performance. 2) Cleaning is physical labor. Sweating is not uncommon during physical labor. 3) The house was virtually spotless, save for the dust. If you don't like dusty houses, you should not be in the cleaning business. Had the house not been dusty, there would be no need for a cleaner. Had the walk through taken place, the dust would not have caught you off guard. 4) We discussed potential prices prior to the cleaning, (price, labor hours, and reviews were our determining factors in our choice) and during the discussion there was no indication whatsoever that the price could ever exceed $0.10 per square foot. No idea where this figure came from. 5) The cleaning was decent, but they did not clean under any of our beds. In addition, we were promised "before and after" photos that we never received. We have had other (cheaper) cleaners in other cities, and the quality was comparable, if not superior. It's possible that for this town, she has superior quality, but this is the only service I've tried here, so I can't comment on that claim. In general, the quality of the cleaning was decent, but I feel like we were somewhat misled as to what the service consisted of, and there was a lack of follow through on the walk through that could have potentially enhanced the level of service. Not to mention, the lack of follow up on the photos, which would have been an appealing concept.

I am very baffled by this group and disappointed in their customer relations. I had met with, and liked this group, so asked them into my home. On the day scheduled she requested we be present the first time, understandable, and we agreed upon 11am. Day arrives, we stay home, 11 rolls around and nothing. Finally, at noon I called them to see the problem. Explained at first house still but will be here. A quick call would have been great. They finally arrived and cleaned the house. It smelled great and looked good. At that time we discussed a regular schedule and they would return in 2 weeks. When the time arrived we rushed back from Colorado and waited, waited and waited. To date I have not received a call still as to why they didn't show. If you are going to own a business you have to deal with the unpleasant as well as the pleasant. If they didn't want to do our house a simple call would be appreciated. That said, if you don't mind those things and have unlimited time to wait then I would hire them as I wasn't dissatisfied with the cleaning, just the professionalism.
