Alex is a great tutor! She has worked with my daughter twice so far and I can already see the difference. Her attitude about math is more positive and she came home with an A on her last test.

My daughter was really struggling with High School Geometry. Laura was able to explain a subject that my daughter felt she would never pass. She went from hopelessness to being able to actually grasp the formulas and definitions and how to use them. She went from getting D's and sometimes not passing a quiz to getting solid B's by the end of the class. I am very grateful for Laura's patience and personal attention. I would highly recommend her for anyone who needs one to one help.

Results! I usually work myself out of a job, and that is a good thing! Success is what we want!

I am interested in passing out the skills that I have to other students or people who are interested in learning beyond what they know. If you are in Arkansas, Little Rock area, I am the best choice for subjects, such as math, physics and related topics. I have been doing these topics for more than six years, and I have experience pedagogically.

I, Jackie, believe that every kid has a chance and will succeed. That is why I am offering to tutor in helping with reading and math (i.e., geometry, algebra, basic, and even probability).

My services are mostly directed towards grade school and middle school students. I have many techniques for every type of learner to ensure full comprehension.

I am a certified English teacher who also has a national teaching license. I can provide tutoring services in any English-related content.

I teach Spanish conversation, grammar, vocabulary, and any topic of interest. I provide practicing of Spanish in real places. I have flexible hours.

I am certified. I have secondary math and elementary certificate and 20 years of experience in teaching. Not all students "get" math. I present skills in such a way that my students understand the concepts and feel a sense of accomplishment that they can do math!

I personalize instruction to the weakness of the student. For example if a violin student needs help reading music. I concentrate on that area. I slso offer my services to homeschool families and military families. I am very detail oriented and want to see others succeed.

I taught high school and middle school math for two years and college-level math for 10 years. My students enjoy my teaching a lot. According to my students I make math easy and fun. I am a full-time faculty at local university so my tutoring time is limited. I am only available between 4pm and 5 pm on Tuesday and Thursday this semester. I charge $75 an hour. The first visit will be an evaluation time so there will be no fee. Pleas contact me if you have any questions.

I am a certified secondary math teacher with 7 years of math teaching experience. I have also taught ACT prep classes and tutored in many areas of math outside of the classroom.

I have a lifelong enthusiasm for learning and try to instill that joy in students. I am a substitute teacher during the year, and have experience with contained classroom and resource students as well as general education classes. I meet in a neutral location, free of noise and distractions, preferably a public library for tutoring sessions. Though not required, I prefer to meet with parents and students (at no cost) before our first lesson. I provide feedback after each lesson and encourage ongoing communication to maximize each student's tutoring experience. I tutor all subjects except for higher level math.

I have a good understanding of how students struggle because I was always struggling in school until I discovered I am dyslexic and had to learn to look at things differently. Now, I know some quick tips to help people who have difficulty reading and comprehending. Also, my older son was very intelligent with a high IQ, but didn't do well in school because of his AD HD. Once we changed his diet and gave him more suitable material to study, he improved greatly. I am able to see past the AD HD of a student and move them to a good space in their self-confidence which helps the learning process.

I can tutor in Spanish. I have a master's degree in Spanish and 14 years of teaching experience, both at the secondary and postsecondary levels.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
