"My Brother abandoned his Family some 25 yrs ago leaving wife and 3 yr old daughter. We were told several years later that he had passed away some 10 yrs after he left and was presumed to be buried in a “Potters Grave” in the NYC area. My niece wanted to visit her fathers grave for closure and through a Family friend we requested Mr Cavallo’s Company to locate his grave. We knew the chances of finding him were very slim seeing we had no idea where he was other then this rumor that he was buried somewhere in the Tri-State area in a Potters Grave which are usually unmarked. We retained Mr Cavallo knowing that this was probably not going to have a happy ending seeing there was no leads to follow. We heard from Mr Cavallo on a weekly basis never giving us any kind of hope or inclination that he had actually gotten a lead early on which took him to Northern California. 18 days after we retained Mr Cavallo our phone rang and as he usually did he called us but this time he started with “is your Family with you right now” and I said yes and he said “ I HAVE FOUND HIM” and I said where he is,when did he pass”?Mr Cavallo said “No you do not understand I found him in Northern California and he is alive”! I completely broke down and you could hear in Mr Cavallo’s voice that he was becoming very emotional and he said “Would you like to speak to him”? “Of course I said yes”! And then I spoke to my Brother for the first time in almost 25 years. The amazing part of this story is that not only did Mr Cavallo find him 3000 miles from where he was last seen but he had been Homeless for almost the entire time that he was living outdoors. How do you find someone who has been living on the streets for most of his adult life when he is thought to be dead? We were only aware of Mr Cavallo by reputation but what he did in this situation regarding finding someone who did not want to be found is nothing short of a Miracle. All story’s do not have happy endings as does this as well because my Brother after getting together with all of our Family has chosen to continue his life of Homelessness.” We often share this story and there have been discussion of making a movie on my brother’s life and how Mr Cavallo came to finding him which is such a huge story in itself and cannot be told properly here but if you have a loved one that is Missing do not even bother using anyone else just retain Chris Cavallo. He is one of the finest investigators and one of the most compassionate and generous persons I have ever known."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
