Charles spent several hours on a few repairs that we needed for my mother's townhouse - replacing the hot water heater, removing a non-functioning water softener, replacing an upstairs bath tub cartridge, installing a new toilet. His charges were exactly what he quoted, very fair and some of the aspects of some of the work ended up involving more time than originally anticipated.

I've always had good luck with Thumbtack. I heard from Mike almost immediately after posting what I needed. It was late in the evening and he came to my house early the next morning. Great communication all along. He evaluated what I needed (a new water heater, unfortunately. Boo!) Made arrangements to come out the next day. The installation took most of the day as he had to redo the piping to bring it up to code. The price was what he quoted. No extra charges. He did a great job. Very appreciative.

I had been without a water heater for a week and the new one could not be installed until I had someone out to rebuild the platform that the water heater sat on. It had become an emergency situation because I didn't know we were not going to be able to use the old platform the heater had been sitting on unitl Wednesday evening. I called Josh late on Wednesday night and he had someone out the next morning. They worked on it all day Thursday and were finished by 5pm. Josh sent George out to do the work and he did an awesome job! I was able to have my new water heater installed the following day. I highly recommend them!

I have used One Call Plumbing Services for about 8 years. They provide exceptional service, are technically knowledgeable and very professional. I have always had annual contracts which includes an annual inspection, access to 24/7 emergency services (which I have needed) and a discount on purchases. I trust their recommendations. Through One Call, I’ve had two toilets installed, drains repaired, shower repaired, and hot water heater replaced. I also learned about Bio One from them – an organic products used to keep my drains clean and running. It is a great product – without using harsh chemicals and I buy bottles with each annual check. I value that they are a locally owned business. I highly recommend them – I wouldn’t use any other plumbing service! Cyndi A

Michael and Tony have completed 2 projects to my absolute satisfaction. The quality of the work is impeccable! They installed a kitchen island, new sink and faucet, plus under the sink water filtration. On another occasion, they cleaned our pipes in the entire house, for a very reasonable price. As they did so, I was able to see on a screen, what our pipes looked like, before and after live! The before clips left no doubt as to how much the lines were in need of serious hydro jet cleaning, and the result after the cleaning was very impressive. All unpleasant smells we experienced often enough are gone. They will be coming back to do the finished plumbing in one of our bathroom, where they already performed the rough plumbing. These 2 guys were knowledgeable, professional, patient, clear, respectful; we call Michael "the drain whisperer" and Tony, "the apprentice whisperer" :) Great work! I highly recommend Elite Rooter!

I hired Optimus for a new A/C install on one of my rental units, after receiving a total of 5 quotes. I will admit, I was a bit nervous about using him because he was not based out of Tucson, rather just outside of Phoenix, but that concern was quickly set aside when I met him during his evaluation of my property. Chris was not only the best price of all my quotes, he proved to be the most responsive, consistent and informative of all the companies I interviewed. I could tell Chris was a good diagnostician and had the ability to think out of the box offering reliable and reasonable solutions to the specific needs of my property. As a business owner, my expectations of any company I hire is that they respond to my calls within a reasonable amount of time, he exceeded that expectation. If I had a question, he answered it, if I had a concern, he addressed it and addressed it quickly. Chris had to make an adjustment to the ducting on my rental unit, the Price he quoted never changed, even though he had to travel back for the changes. I was so impressed with his workmanship, work ethic, professionalism, fair and Honest pricing I decided to add a second A/c unit on the other side of the duplex and then had him come to my home to look at my squeaky, ready to fall apart swap cooler. Once I received his quote, I decided to install my 1st personal AC unit with an AC condenser on the roof and a new Gas Furnace inside along with a fancy thermostat that I can control from work, I am very pleased with this set up. I have entered into additional contract work with Chris and hired him to do maintenance work on a couple of other rentals that I own with older A/c units; clean the coils and assist with problematic water damage due to clogged tubing to include an emergency roof patch. I have referred Chris to several of my friends, they were so happy with his work, they referred him to several of their friends. I highly recommend using Optimus Mechanical, Chris Pointer for all of you A/c needs. Thank you Satisfied customer, Anna

Best plumbing company ever! Samuel takes pride in his work, he is thorough, and makes quality suggestions without being pushy. His suggestion regarding a part on our water heater will save us hundreds of dollars in the future. The new part allows us to easily drain the water heater ourselves. And even though our shower leak ended up being more extensive than originally perceived, he stuck by his original estimate. You won’t regret calling Samuel for your plumbing needs.

I discovered a leak in the hot water heater and posted on thumbtack about 1:30 PM. I chose to call West plumbing at 2:00 PM, Jim was here before 3:00 to inspect the heater. He checked to see if the heater was still under warranty and found it was still covered. He left to pick up new heater, returned and had to do some extra plumbing. All work was completed and the work area cleaned before 6:00 PM. I would recommend West Plumbing to everyone.

Super responsive and thorough. Had a small water issue and they jumped right on it within hours. Tech was very polite and knowledgeable. Left drying equipment in house overnight and picked up the next day. If the tech was representative of the company's overall performance, it's a very good company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.
