My wife and I were on vacation in the Mesa, AZ area and thought we would Google affordable golf instruction. We received multiple "bids" for our business through Thumbtack, and settled on Don based on his bio. I'm a 16 handicap and my wife is just beginning. We've had a few lessons with Don and he is professional, knowledgeable and absolutely knows how to tailor his teaching methods to both of us. After two lessons I am seeing positive improvements in my shots in both distance and accuracy and the lesson I received today in chipping will lower my score further. I didn't know, what I didn't know about chipping until today. Of note, I've had different instructors over the years that have you do things but they don't explain why. Don is the best instructor I have experienced in identifying issues, explaining what is wrong or could be improved, then showing you how to do it. His tips and notes that he gives you, help you remember the lessons. We both would highly recommend Don.

Kelli providing my son's and my first golf lessons. She was very nice, patient with my son and helped my terrible swing improve quite a bit in one lesson. I highly recommend Kelli.

My very first golf lesson, ever. Played tennis prior to this. James is very easy to follow as his lesson was well structured clear and concise. Focused on what was important at the early stages of golf. By keeping it simple and focused I surprised myself and hit the ball nicely about half the time! On my first lesson! Will definitely schedule more lessons with James and highly recommend him as I know improvement for me is guaranteed.

I have been taking golf lessons with Gil for years. Everytime I return to him its because an old "bad habit" has crept back into my game and I need his astute observation, diagnosis and correction. He is always friendly, helpful and genuinely interested in making sure that I return to hitting great shots and enjoying the most from my golf experience. I recommend him to golfers of all levels as he truly has something to offer to everyone.

I have known Rhon for over 40 years. During that time I've known him to be patient, diligent, and kind man. He has given me golf instruction on many occasion. His instruction has taken a substantial number of strokes off my game. Not only has he improved my swing, but he has also taught me course and game management. I highly recommend him as an instructor to men and women of all ages.

I'm looking forward to my 5th golf lesson with Scotty. I have seen numerous golf instructors over the years and the results have been underwhelming. I knew after my third lesson with Scotty my game had turned around. I am making consistently square contact with the ball for the first time in my life and the extra distance and accuracy is remarkable. Thanks Scotty for a new grip and a new beginning.

I've been playing for several years now but could never zero in on what I was doing wrong...I just tried to adjust. After just one lesson with Adam I can see a huge difference in my driving and my fairway woods! He took the time to point out a few things with my swing but not to much to overwhelm me. (That's a big problem I've had with other lessons in the past.) I've been practicing the things Adam told me to do in order to improve and I'm super excited to take another lesson to improve my short game! It was a good price and we were able to meet up at the course at a convenient time for me. I would highly recommend Adam to someone who is beginning or someone who's been playing for a while and wants to zero in on something they're doing wrong.

Had the first lesson with Chet today. Almost instantly he knew what was wrong with my swing and we began working on simple changes to improve. His video analysis is very helpful as well. Chet is a great instructor, I look forward to future lessons.

About

I provide golf lessons to all levels of students within the Phoenix Metro area. I am certified by the USGTF - United States Golf Teachers Federation as a Level III instructor. I believe that a good golf instructor should be able to see a golfer's swing, and almost at once spot the major problem areas in the swing of the student, and by simply looking at the ball flight, will be able to tell just as much. The instructor should then have the ability to formulate a plan quickly to modify those things and show them to the golfer in a way that enables the golfer to feel the movement's proper sensations. Anyone, old or young, experienced or beginner, who wants to enjoy the game more and increase their skill level should try lessons. Lessons are not just for elite golfers, but for anyone who wants to learn. I want to teach if a student wants to learn. I guarantee that students, regardless of race, gender or social status, will feel comfortable during the lessons. I'm not a fan of band-aid fixes for swing problems; it's much better to master the swing correctly from the hole out. By that, I mean first comes putting, then chipping, then the full swing. In the same manner that you can't add on rooms onto a building with a faulty foundation, you can't also fix a swing that has a bad foundation. You will learn the type of swing that is optimal for your personality and body type. Each one is different; in golf, there is no one swing fits all.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
