Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a photographer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a photographer, see if the photographer can take photos outdoors or in a large space so all involved parties can maintain the recommended distance between themselves. You should also sanitize surfaces, avoid handshakes, don’t make any other physical contact and use digital platforms to complete payments. Speak with a local photographer in your area to put a strategy in place.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Oh my goodness, they've exceeded all expectations! They were such a positive highlight of our day, helping make everything go smoothly and even contributing to some of the planning and ideas! (the beautiful sparkler/first dance photo!). We are so grateful for their passion and expertise and couldn't recommend them enough.

We contracted Rita to photograph the grand unveiling of our new brand at a trade show at the Convention Center, then our hospitality event later that evening. She was easy to reach and responded quickly. We went over all of the logistics and created a timeline. A day or two before the event, we confirmed all the details. She arrived early and was ready to go. She took great photos of our new booth and very nice team photo. From our CEO's speech to the ribbon and cutting and opening reception, she took hundreds of great photos from all angles. We moved on to the hospitality event where Rita did an amazing job especially in getting our somewhat photo-shy guests to take hundreds of posed, fun and even crazy (in a super fun way) group photos. She captured folks bowling, shooting pool playing video games, dancing, etc. All in all, we couldn't have been happier with the entire experience. Her 5.0 rating is well-deserved.

Okay let me start by saying if you are questioning hiring him.... DONT’T! He is BEYOND AMAZING!! we worked with him for over a year. He asked all the right questions to help make my special day PERFECT....and the groom showed up too so that’s always a plus 😉 let’s start with the music. He was sure to ask about the age range of all the guests (they ranged in age from 22-75) he was able to get the party jumping and pleased EVERYONE with his music. We had young and old dancing and singing. We all enjoyed ourselves so much the cops got called! Lol. He found some hard to find underground music I requested...ohhhhh man I can’t say enough good stuff! And charisma THIS guy is so down to earth and fun. NOT creepy (and you know the joke about wedding DJ’s). Now onto the photos (and I will attach a few). Part of the freeway was closed down and he was stuck in traffic for TWO hours, but he stuck with it, kept me up to date and he arrived in time. He apologized but let’s be logical the traffic is not his fault! And he COMMUNICATED!!! The photo's speak for themselves. They are beautiful! He gave me ALL the photos and retouched them (all included in his package). Last but not least... Value. Monetarily YES such a awesome value. But what was MOST valuable to me was knowing I could count on him. My photos are INCREDIBLE and our special day will last forever in those photos. I also admire him as a human. He was kind, worked closely with me and made me feel like FAMILY! When we come back to Phoenix we will be looking him up to see if him and his partner would want to go get drinks. In this INSANE world, it’s reassuring that there are still good honest people out there who CARE about making people happy and providing a good product/service. You would be a FOOL not to hire him!
