We had several jobs around the house that needed addressed before putting our house on the market. The House Doctor handled all of them, including: RV gate installation Island mount hood vent in kitchen Electrical work Drywall repair Kitchen cabinet installation Tile installation I am very pleased with the quality and value of the work done, and glad I found one person to handle all of it rather than subcontract out to several different people. Very trustworthy and helpful. Went above and beyond when an issue came up (ie drove across town to pick up an oven I purchased on craigslist). Thank you John!

John arrived on time and did an outstanding job modifying my kitchen cabinet. He reinstalled the cabinet taking time to address details to make things look right. He was courteous and .... he cleaned up his work area after he finished. I will be having KJ Home Improvement doing more work for me.

I put out request for bid and received a response from Teena within 20 minutes. I hired them to assemble 20 ikea kitchen cabinets (which are being installed by my custom installer). Both her and Nathan were hard working, respectful and super organized. I definitely recommend them and will be calling them again in the near future!

Excellent work. My cabinets in kitchen were painted white and look beautiful. The island was painted dark brown to contrast with the white cabinets. They put up white subway tile for the backsplash. We had another company do the granite. They repaired the walls and ceilings and painted most of the house. All was done neatly and professionally. We were very pleased with all the repairs and remodeling done by C and D painting.

Nicolas was hired to remove one of our kitchen cabinets, and redo the crown moulding, in addition to modifying our oven cabinet to fit a larger oven. Nicolas was prompt, friendly, and had excellent attention to detail. His workmanship was great, and I would certainly recommend him in the future.

I am so happy with the job that Michael did redoing our kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as our kitchen island. The cabinets look brand new and beautiful and the island is stunning with custom wainscoting. Everyone thinks we replaced the granite (which we did not) because the kitchen looks so dramatically different.

Nate built us a cabinet to retrofit our entertainment center to accommodate our new 65 inch HD flat screen TV. The final product was a perfect match to our cherry cabinetry. He completed the work right on schedule. He also repaired a kitchen cabinet door for us. His craftsmanship is outstanding. We definitely highly recommend him.

Brad was quick to quote, very friendly, and professional. His work was amazing and directly in the timeframe he told me it would take. He turned my 1970's kitchen cabinets into a clean modern master piece. We really thought there was no helping the cabinets we had, but he proved us wrong. They are gorgeous now. His fees are very reasonable. This guy is an artist! I'm so pleased I found him and would definitely use him again and recommend him. Just fantastic.

Jhan did an excellent job refinishing our bedroom furniture that was originally a tan color to a beautiful dark brown. We love it. He showed up on time and the quality of his work is excellent as well as finishing on schedule. We plan to use him to refinish our kitchen cabinets, front door, and beams once we start our kitchen remodel.

We have a rental property that was outdated. We hired Chromatic Coatings to restain the kitchen cabinets and do a countertop stone coating. Ardi gave us a discounted price which we appreciated, but even better we were able to rent our unit for extra money each month. Since then we have recommended him to friends as well who are very happy with the work that chromatic coatings has done for them. Highly recommend this company!

We completely remodeled our kitchen. LeRoy's company removed all of the old cabinets, and restyled the room with an entirely different configuration of cabinets. The cabinets are beaufiful and his ideas in arrangement are modern and functional. But that is just the beginning. Leroy has always been helpful if I came up with any ideas later. He follows up on his work and makes absolutely sure that everything is finished, and finished CORRECTLY. Happy Sun City Resident

I originally contacted Adam Smith from Orange Dragon Designs to repair a kitchen cabinet that had been discolored. He did such a great job on that small job, I hired him again to refinish a coffee table and end table. His work on that project exceeded my greatest expectation, the furniture looks brand new again. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

It was a pleasure working with Mr Medina. He very successfully assessed our problem. He came up with a solution that saved us time and money. The project was to modify a cabinet for a new oven and microwave for my elderly parents. He was respectful of them and their situation, and left the work site cleaner then he found it.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

    How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

    Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

    • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
    • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
    • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
    • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
