Sylvester and his crew did a fantastic job! They called when they were on their way and arrived within the originally quoted window. They were careful with my things...moving them out of a storage unit and bringing them to my new house. Thank you thank you!!

Jason and his team were great! They handled the move extremely well and were done in the time frame I expected. They even exceeded my expectations on service. When a box that was not supposed to go to storage ended up there by mistake, Jason personally came back to help retrieve this important item and save the day - thank you!!

Frank and his team were professional, proficient, and very knowledgeable. They scheduled me in less then 24 hours and were the best price I could find after looking at dozens of pool table movers. Frank gave me additional tips for storage and was educational every step of the way. I will definitely be utilizing them again when I need my pool table transported again. Only compliant I have is Frank is a raiders fan 😂

Daniel and John were on time, worked efficiently, and were done ahead of schedule. They were unfailingly polite and respectful of me and my posessions. Scheduling was easy and the price was exactly as quoted with--as Daniel promised--no hidden fees. I hired them to move things to storage and will definitely be calling on them when I sell my house and move later this spring.

I sold my home and needed help moving things to a storage unit. I found the rates with Momentum Movers to be very reasonable, even with three movers on a Sunday. They were very careful not damaging anything in my home (put padding along the stair railings) and very cautious when moving things around corners.....even an elliptical machine. Not only were they efficient they were fun. It seemed they enjoyed their job and kidded around with each other. They were very careful when unloading my things into the storage unit as well as making certain items were available to me when needed (e.g., a dresser to put clothes in towards the front of the storage unit). I wouldn't hesitate recommending Momentum Movers to anyone.

Moving is always tough! We had set a time, but there was a situation that came up and we had to reschedule. They were at the job early the next day, and had things about a third of the way done by the time I got home after work. It was really hot out, so it took a bit longer, but understandably so, as moving is difficult at best! They were professional, and I enjoyed the banter and conversations, just really nice guys! We got it all out to the storage area, which turned out not to be ideal, but they not only made it work, but in a rush, sent out another guy to help as the ONE day I decide to move, a huge monsoon with dangerous thunder and lightning overhead hit! We got everything in and everyone was drenched. Team work! I would definitely recommend this team of guys to anyone who is looking to move. Friendly service goes a long way and they were a pleasure.

We were having a sofa moved from a house to a storage locker. Unfortunately for them, their truck broke down. However, they secured a different truck and completed the move. Kudos to them for following through instead of informing us that they couldn't do the move

The guys were great and really nice. They got caught in crazy Phoenix traffic and were about an hour late, so we were rushing a bit at the end, but they had planned for three hours and even with a 20/30 minute drive to the moving location, got everything done and placed for me in the exact amount of time they planned for.

My experience with this moving company was so amazing! They arrived on time to my like they said they would. They brought all the things needed to complete the job like they said they would. They were very professional and well-mannered. Brian and Jay worked their buts off! Brian, who is the lead man really made me feel like we known each other for years. He showed why he is lead man of this company. I am more than grateful that I hired this company. If I could rate them at 10 stars I would because they deserve it. Thank you, Sun City Muscle Movers LLC

The guys at All State really helped me out. They were available within a few days notice and were flexible when something came up on the day of the move. They were extremely fair priced, gave me a better quote than any other company. They worked for over four hours, in triple digit heat, and barely slowed down. They were professional and hard working. The stuff I had in my storage unit was in pretty bad shape from the heat, being ripped open when we need to find things, and being poorly packed and stacked in the unit in the first place. The guys did what they could, and nearly everything made it my new place ok. They even disposed of a broken book case for me that my son had climbed on and broke while looking for something. All in all, I am pleased with the service I received.

OK - I admit, I didn't wind up using them - but I give them a five star rating all the same. I had placed a request for moving assistance in my own home because I was doing a flooring reno project and had to have all the furniture out of the bedrooms. Of all the moving companies contacted by Thumbtack, only two responded, one of which refused to help.I suppose this was too small of a job for them. Bellhops at least contacted me with a very reasonable offer for assistance. If I ever do move, I will use Bellhops.

I have had several AMAZING experiences with NorthStar Moving. I have used this Professional Moving Co and their storage for my own move! I moved from Woodland Hills to the Central Coast. I utilized their storage facilities! Both of my adult daughters in Sacramento & Sherman Oaks have used NorthStar & we are a very HAPPY family. I highly recommend Northstar Moving!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
