Excellent work. Attention to detail. Joe troubleshot the drip systems and diagnosed and corrected the problems. Not cheap but a fair price for the work done. You do get what you pay for and I highly recommend this company for irrigation/drip system work.

Jason is excellent! He just completed my front and backyard trimming shrubs, pruning 2 trees, a total of close 15 plants in my backyard and pesticide the front and Backyard! He even added a stake to one tree so the wind wouldn't bend. I purchased the stake and spike fertilizers. The price was good for all that he did. He'said even back for an extra spray of pesticide at no extra cost to me. Hire him, he's great. He'll do another project for me next year. Sincerely, Maria

Chris did a fantastic job trimming my overgrown tree. He was on time, friendly and even sent me a text when he was on his way over to my place to do the work. He is very knowledgeable about plants, trees and landscaping and gave me some great tips about other plants and trees on my property. I definitely will be hiring him again for future work and I highly recommend him for your project.

Larry was very courteous and professional during the install of our water softener. He did a great job and did it at a great rate. He was honest and very fair. I would hire him again if a need arises for any additional plumbing work. Many of the larger companies that deal with water softness wanted a lot more that what Larry charged. I am so glad I shopped around for another option.

Shawn and team were prompt for my appoinment. I had palm trees trimmed, 2 dead trees removed, and all of my bushes trimmed. They did all of the work, cleaned up and hauled all of the stuff away. They also removed the roots from the dead trees. They were VERY reasonably priced. Shawn is very knowledgeable about the variety of plants and trees and gave me good tips on how to care for them. It was beginning to get dark and Shawn made everyone stay until the landscape was raked and looked immaculate. My yard looked so nice that I had 3 neighbors stop by and ask Shawn to give them quotes. I am totally pleased with the work that Shawn did and will definitely use him again.

James and his team did a fantastic job on our backyard. James is a true pro who was very easy to work with. He presented great ideas at the planning stage, considered our budget, knew the HOA plant restrictions, and ultimately came up with a plan we love. The project was completed ahead of schedule and we love the results. The price was fair and now we have a backyard that looks amazing. Thank you James!!!

We were having a big problem with a pool pump not getting power from panel and Breaker and also no power to back barbecue and no water to drip irrigation. Three "Master" licensed electricians came and quoted from $1050 to $2090 to fix. Marco thoroughly tested and analyzed everything and resolved all problems in three hours for $180. He really knows his stuff. I never write reviews but if you are ever in a big bind like us and need someone who is honest and has the common sense and intelligence to really figure something out, look no further.

I needed the yard cleaned very thoroughly, including cutting back all of the significantly overgrown plants and pulling grass out of a large portion of geavel/desert landscape. I also had three hedge bushes dug up, roots and all. Carlos and his sons were timely and professional, and communicated well when a scheduling conflict arose on my side. Quality work, family values, great communication, and competitive rates made me not only thrilled with Carlos' work, but also causee to hire Carlos to perform my regular yard maintenance.

Good communication but not ideal for a larger yard. Usually only 1 worker, 2 max. Didn't consistently edge or maintain plants/trees.

We were EXTREMELY pleased and impressed by the entire team. I can't say enough, they met with me and at my request, provided me with a design for both front and back. They then itemized everything so I knew where every dollar was going. They took care of contacting and dealing with our HOA. Each day Rodge's Team arrived on time and worked about 11 hour days non-stop (usually 3-4 workers). They always let me know exactly what they would be doing the next day. It only took them 7 days to completely landscape both the front and back of our house, laying artifical turf, planting trees, planting a number of plants and cacti, putting in a drip system, laying a very large area of travertine (almost the size of our entire yard), building a gas fire pit and bench (laying the gas line), put in a walkway and I'm probably leaving something out. Our yard is beautiful (I tried to take pictures but it is too shaded outside) The plants/cacti/trees they picked were amazing. They always kept the areas clean, free of any construction materials, and left the areas spotless when they were finished. Very friendly and eager to please. I am so happy I went with Cosnova and I would highly recommend them to anyone considering landscaping, I had three estimates done, and they were the most responsive and they were priced right.

Ivan was ready to start our project the day after we hired him. He and his crew worked hard moving rock and digging a utility trench on some of the hottest days in July. We were so pleased that he could do the plumbing, electricity and sewer connections as well as pour the concrete slab for our motor home. When they were finished we couldn't even see where our desert landscaped yard had been disturbed. We are pleased to recommend Pacific Stone and Flooring.

The company was very responsive and was able to send someone to help on a Sunday, when everyone else wanted me to wait until Monday to have my water heater fixed, which would have meant no hot water for the weekend. Gary really went above and beyond installing the water heater, configuring a difficult pipe connection without complaining or even discussing the problems as they came up. His expertise and experience was clear as he resolved every problem without skipping a beat. Gary was professional, so much more than competent, and cleared away everything after the job. I didn't lift a finger during or after the job. This is what customer service is supposed to be like. Well done.

I was contacted quickly and was able to receive an estimate in a very timely manner. Work was started immediately and finished as promised. We are very pleased with our rebuilt waterfall and pond. Joe was a dream to work with. He worked quickly and quietly. My daughter works graveyard shift and Joe went out of his way to not disturb her. He even added some fish as a surprise for her! We highly recommend Ducy Hardscaping.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
