Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Serviz sent an electrician out last Monday and provided me a quote. After accepting, they scheduled another appointment today to start the project. After being an hour and a half late, I called in and asked where the electrician is and they were trying to send someone else out to redo the whole quote from scratch again. Now I’m frustrated because not only are they late, they want to give me a new quote. Very unprofessional and do not recommend.

I needed to get “a low voltage electrician”, according to COX Communications in order to install a fiber optic cable. Contacted this company and Jesus came out, estimated it, and did an amazing job! Very professional and personable. No wonder they’re on top of the list for this type of work. Definitely going to use them for any future work. Thanks again!

Jason did an amazing job on our electrical repairs inside and outside of the house. He was knowledgeable and answered all of our questions, and explained things along the way so we understood. He gave us all options he would recommend without pushing products or pressuring us to work on more projects now. We are now looking forward to completing some house projects now that we found an honest, reliable, and fair priced electrician!

Jason is knowledgeable, and I was hoping to leave him a great review; he's a nice guy. He was hired to replace a kitchen light and several outlets in our kitchen. He did a good job replacing the kitchen outlets and replacing the kitchen light. The problem is that a ceiling fan in the adjacent room stopped working after he replaced the kitchen switch. We notified him that there was an issue, and he agreed to come back, initially at the end of the day, then it became the next day. I reached out to him again after all of this and didn't get anywhere. I ultimately have to hire another electrician to fix what was working before we hired Jason. Skillset is pretty essential, but reliability matters as well.

I need to wire a new breaker for a portable AC unit in the west facing bedroom that is really warm and Alen was the first electrician contacted me. He came to the house to give me a detailed description of the project and a reasonable estimate on Friday when I submitted the job request on Thumbtack and worked from 8 to 4 next day which was a Saturday to get it done. The job turned out to be taking much longer than he originally anticipated but he didn't complain or charged me any extra than he quoted me for. He was very professional and did a great job getting everything done beautifully. He cleaned up well after the job was finished and I had nothing to worry. He is a hard working guy and I would definitely hire him again!

I was looking for an electrician because I the electricity in one-half of my house shut off completely and the breaker would not reset. I suspected the problem would be extremely difficult to solve and very expensive to fix, as mine is an older home. I am happy to say that Mr. Topcic lives up to his excellent reviews; he was not only able to patiently and diligently trouble-shoot the problem; he was able to solve it in a short amount of time and at a very reasonable price. I could not be more pleased with the outcome. His work is top-notch; his ability to trouble-shoot and fix electrical issues is outstanding—he does not give up when faced with challenges; this sets him apart from most. He cares about delivering high-quality work and customer satisfaction is clearly his top priority. He does not leave a mess; he keeps the work area clean. If you want a pro that can deliver excellent results reasonably, I highly recommend calling Mr. Topcic. I will recommend him to all of my friends.
