I am absolutely thrilled with the job John did for me. He repaired all the huge holes in my kitchen ceiling, textured, and painted. Can't tell where the damages ever were. He also installed new lighting and painted the rest of the kitchen area; a real job around cabinets , windows, and doors.

The work performed was very good. Installed Cabinet trim and some wood shutters were cut to size and installed. Very meticulous in work. Arrived as stated and price charged was fair. Would recommend DC Builders and would use again.

We were extremely happy with Adrian's work. We initially requested a quote for a repair of a number of interior hollow wood doors, all damaged with a number of punctured holes. Adrian was quick to show up on the site and provide an estimate that we thought was fair. The work he did was professional and high in quality. The doors were patched with a high-class wood filler, re-sanded and painted, leaving them looking like new. Thank you Adrian for the extraordinary service!

I had Exquisite Glass replace 5 panes of glass in some old casement windows. They were easy to communicate with and did a great job. They were careful to clean up all of the old glass and worked efficiently. We had a slow start when they were 20 minutes after the hour window start time they gave me, but I would still use them again and recommend them.

Larry and Brenda were courteous and professional with the rather small project I had which was painting all the wood trim around the exterior doors and also the backyard patio where wood was replaced during a roof replacement. Did a great job. Plan to contact them when I'm ready to paint my house.

John was wonderful. This project started out as a simple replace some patio wood that had some water damage. It turned into a LOT more than that. John kept with it the whole way, helping us save money where we could. But, the project ended up costing 7 or 8 times more than we had anticipated. Not because of anything John did, but because of how bad the water damage was. John got it fixed using some sub-contractors for painting and roof work, with no problem. Great job John! I highly recommend him for your project! Scott M.

They did a wonderful job! They showed up with a crew of polite, hard working people on time and completed the job perfectly. We would definitely recommend them and use them again. They also have a contracting license so they can provide services other window companies can't. Thanks for a job well done!

Window lock replacement. Hector did an outstanding job locating a new lock. He had to find a company out of state to provide a lock. He was courteous, on time and did a great job. I would hire him again.

Although it took some back and forth to schedule (my fault) the work was done on a Sunday...arrived within the agreed to timeframe, the work was done well (broken window glass replaced), and he even put up with my barking monstrous Shepherd. Thank you!

Hector repaired the frame around an exterior window when we discovered that another contractor had installed it incorrectly. Hector was friendly, responsive and exceeded our expectations with communication and timeliness. We would, comfortably, recommend him to our friends.

Encore removed old doors & closed up the walls, replaced old windows, and added a new sliding glass door. The owner Josh oversaw the whole project and did a lot of the work himself. The crew was prompt and cleaned up each day. We are very happy with the results and plan to use Encore in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
