Our national trade magazine really benefited from having Jeff on board for this assignment. He did a fantastic job, capturing quality images that perfectly complemented this cover article. He was professional, his price point very reasonable, and his turnaround time was extremely helpful given our tight timetable. We would definitely use him on future photo shoots, and highly recommend him to others seeking a dependable expert for their photography needs.

I engaged Renée Purdie as my editor for Peace, Presence Power from Australia. When a deadline was set, she met it. The editing was over a period of 12 months as a result of my taking a great deal of time to complete the last pass of the book. Renée was ever patient and encouraging whilst making constructive comments. She also informed me of links that could assist, such as the different options for printing and publishing. Our communication on line was excellent and Renée taught me how to use certain editing processes with which I had been unfamiliar. I realise on reflection that at the beginning of working together I should have informed Renée that I needed to be shown step by step how to work on the editing process of the book as well as understand the language of editing such as the last 'pass'. However, whenever I did ask for clarity, Renée came up with the information and I was able to proceed. It has been a pleasure to work with such a genuine human being.

Chris Bohnsack designed this year's Annual Report for the Pima County Joint Technical Education District, and did an outstanding job. This was our 7th edition, and while Chris was willing to follow the lead of our previous graphic designer, he suggested several great ideas for updating the look and feel of the publication. When they rolled off the presses, and we published the Annual Report online we immediately began receiving rave reviews and compliments on the job. Chris is extremely easy to work with, from our initial concept meeting, through the design process, numerous corrections to the copy we submitted to him, and getting the job to the printer. He worked quickly, which helped because we're always on a tight deadline, and he was always accessible and communicated with us so there were never any surprises. He is a talented artist, who shows a genuine interest in producing an outstanding project that reflects the values and identity of the client. I've been working in public relations and have been in charge of hiring graphic designers and creating publications for foundations, the University of Arizona, and school districts for the past 18 years. Working with Chris is a pleasure, and the best part is, he made me look great in front of my boss. Thank you Chris! We'll be working together again!

Angela Orlando helped me on a book project. She was very cordial over the telephone, that we established a nice capability to email draft material over the internet via dropbox, and in the end she did a superb job on what I asked her to do and at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend her.

As a small-press book publisher, I'm super pleased with Calliope Writing & Editing Services. I've received top-level editing and copy-editing services from them, against some very tight deadlines. They went the extra mile at reasonable rates. Without the editing skill and professionalism at Calliope, our latest book would not have made deadline for our book-launch event in Manhattan. I can not recommend them enough.

This has included work on my two books, book chapters, articles and blog posts. She is an extraordinary professional who is highly skilled in all aspects of editing. Karen is bright, sensitive, an exceptional listener, and a sheer pleasure to work with. I recommend her without reservation.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

        • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
        • Strong writing skills.
        • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
        • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
        • Expertise in your target area.
        • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

        • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
        • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
