Oscar did me a huge favor in that he penciled me in while still doing another project and I'm very grateful because I'm getting married in a week and needed help fast..plus i live in Casa Grande. His workers took great pride in their work and i didn't have to clean up behind them like you usually have to with contractors. I will definitely hire him again. Exceptional!!!!

My husband and I just had our swamp cooler replaced with an AC unit. These guys were awesome. They were the best price out of the other quotes we received. They were professional, on time and communicated with me on when the unit would be here. We were having an issue with the fuse box and they didn't rush at all. They stayed to make sure everything was hooked up correctly and worked efficiently. Other thing I liked, THEY PICKED UP AFTER THEMSELVES. We've hired other contractors who leave a mess and it's horrible. They were just fantastic and recommended the best product, best price and gave us advice on products to choose from. Overall, 5+ stars. I would recommend them and I'm a picky person. That says a lot about me.

We had an emergency when our A/C went out and I'm 8 months pregnant. Fernando was so helpful. He made us a priority, diagnosed the issue, and completed the task in a few hours. I'd recommend this company to anyone with hvac issues.

A microburst of wind blew approximately 30% of the roof off my mother’s house. The wind was so strong it peeled the roof off from the front of the house to rear, and as the material peeled back it even moved the cooler, taking out a ventilation pipe as well. My mom contacted her insurance company and they sent out a contractor to estimate the cost to repair the roof. Much to our surprise, the quoted price to repair the roof by this company, which shall remain anonymous, was several thousand dollars; perhaps the price we imagined it would be to do the entire roof. This price seemed quite exorbitant to repair just a portion of the roof, so we decided to get a couple other quotes on our own. To say the least, this company was very underhanded in their dealings. The contractor actually contacted the insurance company and told them that we had already signed a contract for them to do the work. This was obviously an attempt to get the insurance company committed, and it almost worked. The insurance company sent a check with the contractor’s name, which had to be canceled as we were not going to get a partial repair at such a high cost. As you can imagine, this was a very stressful time for my mother and I because if any rains came, water would have easily gotten into the house causing further damage. I decided to search for reputable companies that could be trusted and I found Pro Star Construction, owed by Octavio Vasquez. Through my thorough search on the internet, I found many glowing reviews for the Octavio Vasquez which put me at ease. I contacted Octavio and he came out to survey the damage and spoke with my mother in person while I was at work. Although all of the positive reviews I read on Octavio and Pro Star Construction had put me at ease, I was still quite surprised when I spoke to my mother about her experience speaking with Octavio in person. My mother, who is a pretty good judge of a person’s character, said that he was very informative about what the roof actually needed, what he would be doing if we went with him, how long it would take, etc. He was just very informative about the entire process and we actually learned a bit about roofing just from speaking with him; for example, the pros and cons of oil based versus water based reflective coatings. Octavio presented 3 detailed quotes: One for just repairing the damaged area, another for repairing the damaged area and maintenance (reflective coat on undamaged portion), and a quote to redo the entire roof. Octavio’s quote to repair the entire roof was only about $700.00 more than the shady contractor wanted for repairing just the damaged area, which was only about 25-30% of the roof! We decided to have Octavio do the entire roof because of the great pricing and because it had been about 20 years since the last roof was put on. To put it into perspective how competitive on pricing Octavio’s company is, we did have another quote by another highly rated company, and their quote was over $2,000.00 higher to do the entire roof. Additionally, Octavio displayed his integrity on several occasions because he had many opportunities to do work which was not necessary and he flat out told us it did not need to be done. For example, the house is in need of a paint job and the paint has peeled off of the fascia- wood at the edges of the roof in many areas. This wood looks bad in some areas, and to a person with limited knowledge, it would appear that this wood should be replaced, but Octavio said that it just needs to be prepped and painted, and replacement was not necessary. Can you imagine how many contractors would have been chomping at the bit to do this extra work? Octavio (Pro Star Construction) is a throwback to a time long passed. At time where contractors and other businesses were not just “in it to win it” and rip people off by overcharging and doing work that’s not needed. If you need your roof done, or any other type of work (Octavio does other work as well), I highly recommend you contact Pro Star Construction. I know whenever we need other work done; Octavio will be getting a call from us.

My a/c went out late Friday afternoon and David responded immediately with a quote. He arrived 20 minutes after I called and was able to get my very old a/c unit cooling again. David thoroughly explained what was wrong, what parts were needed, and the cost involved for the repairs before beginning the work so there were no surprises. Turned out another part was needed and he showed me the old part and then went to pick it up without increasing the overall quote by too much. He did all this work with a monsoon and nightfall looming on the horizon. Great service - I'd recommend David to anyone needing HVAC service.

Frank Yannich is a contractor I hired for several jobs. He was always professional, courteous, reasonably priced and on time. His knowledge and skills include a wide range. Some repairs were small like replacing rotted wood, plumbing and fixing my garage door. However. his carpentry work and attention to detail really shine in the bigger projects such as the install of my bamboo flooring, tile work in the bathrooms and also a kitchen remodeling. He stayed within his estimated time frame and my budget. Frank was also able to give suggestions and advice when I was overwhelmed with choices. Frank cares about his work and treats your home as if it's his own. I would highly recommend him for your handyman projects.

Elmer and Adam provided exactly what we hoped for. It is difficult to find a reliable contractor to do small jobs but we did in this case. They treated our small project as if it were a lot larger. We highly recommend them for future opportunities.

Southwest Patio Concepts was given the job of totally reworking our back patio and front walkway and entrance. The job entailed concrete demolition, concrete pouring, tiling, and paver installation. We are an extremely demanding customer in terms of both design and execution of design and SPC handled both requirements without fault. It should be noted that in addition to executing the job to perfection, SPC was the best contractor we've ever used in regards to care for the existing structure and cleanliness, both during and after the work was complete. We can recommend James Valdez and Southwest Patio Concepts without reservation.

DD Kruse was prompt in responding to my call. Dean Kruse offered great solutions at a time when other contractors were hesitant to take on the job. Bathroom cabinetry had water damage and needed to be replaced. He took extra time to find matching cabinet doors and drawers, tile and specific light fixtures. He is extremely considerate and pleasant to work. The work was finished quickly and the bathroom looks stunning! My only suggestion is that there should be more attention to detail by the work crew who was a little messy.

Hugh was an extremely professional contractor. Although he didn't do the work himself he did bring a mason with him for a quote the same day I submitted a request. The work was very good. The 210' stucco wall turned out beatifically a the price was much less than other quotes. I'm very satisfied with the results and look forward to working with Hugh again.

Total Comfort's technician responded the same day to an A/C failure in 100+ degree heat after American Home Services was unable to timely provide one of their selected contractors for service,as were a couple of other contractors. This occurred during a real crunch in the local A/C business during an extended heat wave. The tech went beyond the call, diagnosing the problem, chasing the needed parts and running for parts twice to get the system back in operation--one run was after normal business hours and he persuaded the supplier's rep to open the business so he could get a part. That part ended up not working so the tech got the correct part early the next day and repaired the system. Charges were reasonable and the system has performed well ever since. The tech kept us informed throughout all of this so we knew where the job stood. First class service!

I'm Alberto's son. I'm writing this review NOT just to get my papa a higher chance to get hired, because most people tend to trust talent with reviews, but also to let people know papa's ability. Papa is highly experienced in HVAC and Appliance work. Over 15 years for different employers. He has a thorough style and looks at quality first. When working, he uses technical information a lot, not only relying on memory, for example by referencing data sheets and schematics. He has most of the tools he needs. Papa is very courteous in dealing with other people which what makes the experience great.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
