FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My base rate is $20 per hour for one person. My lessons are 90 minutes, so $30 for a lesson, I charge $10 extra for the 90 minutes for a second person. My rates for group classes vary depending on the number of students and the number of sessions desired. For tutoring sites over 10 miles away I work out an acceptable time and distance surcharge.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I sit with the customer for 30-45 minutes at no charge. If they are not beginners, I ask them to have a writing sample ready for me. I start asking simple questions on a beginning level and work my way up so I can determine our starting point. If they are beginners, after an English introduction I start speaking in Spanish right away. Normally my beginners are speaking in short complete sentences within 15 minutes.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in English with ESL endorsement, minor in Spanish. I am a retired airline employee and have spent 7 of my airline years in primarily Spanish-speaking cities. Although I do not have a certificate, I have done simultaneous interpretation for over 40 years. I brought my daughter up speaking three languages simultaneously.
