After renting my home out for 3 years I returned to find my backyard irrigation system malfunctioning. 75% of my plants were not receiving water. I called Rick at Transformers who recommended an upgrade to my old in-ground irrigation system. Although the upfront cost was higher than I had imagined, the new system will pay for itself over the years. Rick showed me how to manage & maintain the system on my own. In addition, Rick explained the settings on my automatic drip system, & how to adjust water flow to individual shrubs. His team, Travis & Alfonso worked hard in the sun for many hours to upgrade the irrigation lines. Not only were they hard-working & professional but they were also tolerant of my new puppy who was poking her nose wherever they worked. And added bonus was they gave me a line to my potted front door flowers so that it would be included in the regularly scheduled waterings. My plants are thriving which makes me happy!

My kitchen sink and faucet needed replacing and two waterpik shower sprayers installed as well as a mirror hung. I knew I needed a credentialed and knowledgeable plumber. Geoff was very responsive to my post and came over the next day to assess things. He was very thorough and knowledgeable which gave me confidence. His credentials and his reviews were backed up by his integrity, attention to quality work, and friendly nature. He completed the job the next week (Labor Day) and fairly and accurately priced his services. He came ready with supplies. When he discovered the sink had a severe bend on the corner, he ran to Home Depot and exchanged it (I don't live far away) and promptly returned. When the faucet turned out to have a design flaw that would have been a real annoyance, he was flexible. I was able to quickly find another online and run to Home Depot and pick it up. The faucet works *perfectly*. He replaced some 10 y/o plumbing and got things all working again without flaw. I really enjoyed Geoff's presence and he takes great pride in his work. Made for an overall pleasant several hours and I would most definitely recommend him for your projects.

They did a great job. I couldn't be home while they were here. I think it is a sign of a good business when they do good work even when they know you aren't there watching them. My only concern was that they pulled two plants when they were clearing the multitude of weeds out of a large raised planter in my back yard. However, in all fairness, the plants were not very large and had some dead portions due to exposure to the cold this winter. So I can see how they could have been mistaken for a large weed. All in all the work was good and I would hire them again.

They were quick to respond and came out promptly. They did a great job on our yard which looked like a jungle. They were very pleasant, well spoken and had a good understanding of plants. They cleaned everything up nicely before leaving. We look forward to having them again on a regular monthly basis. We have a lot of shrubbery to keep up and they are a good value.. I highly recommend.

I hired Larry's Landscaping to do a complete makeover on my back yard and front side yard. He also included a complete clean up with new rock in the front of the house. I'm not sure if I can put into words what a fantastic job he and his partner did. Larry shared my vision for what I wanted done but did a much better job than ever expected!! They started March 15th and finished March 25th. My yard was an utter mess of overgrown weeds and unknown plants. They worked so hard clearing that all out and got to building the new landscaping. He knew the problems I had with flooding during monsoon season and fixed it. Jobs included a brick patio, artificial grass area, a waterfall, fire pit, a huge planter area for gardening and plants, taking down a tree and making a parking area and planting an orange tree with some plants, all new gravel rock and clean up of plants in the front. He even found me organic dirt for the garden. The transformation is beyond fantastic!!! They work so hard not wasting any time. Larry involves you in all decisions and they are so kind and professional. I have no doubt I chose the right company!! I will surely call him for all future projects. The pictures will speak for themselves.

We hired Oscar Silva and Silva Diversified Construction, LLC, to replace an old, degraded asphalt driveway with concrete aggregate. We also had them extend utilities onto a landscaped island to provide water and electrical service. Oscar suggested he add landscaping lighting during the project and we agreed. The project just finished up and we are pleased beyond our expectations. This was not our "first rodeo" when it comes to hiring contractors, but we have never made a better choice. The task was performed up to workmanlike standards and the quality of craftsmanship is evident. The transformation is dazzling and we have already received numerous compliments from our neighbors. His bid came in lower than I had anticipated and the work was done perfectly and right on schedule. His crew was professional and friendly and obviously takes great care in the quality of their work. Oscar was in constant contact with us, working with us closely every step of the way, and provided on-site direction and leadership that evidenced his sense of care and professionalism. We give Oscar Silva and Silva Diversified Construction our highest recommendation.

I originally hired Ociel to do some cleanup on my yard so I could do sod installation... it ended up being a bigger project than I thought so I asked Ociel if he could do the installation. It took a while because I didn't need very much sod for my small yard, and the home improvement stores kept being bought out by big companies, but we finally got some. He did a great job!! I was worried about it not taking root because of the heat but it looks so good. I will definitely be using Ociel in the future.

I used Thumbtack.com to hire a landscaping contractor to remove and add some plants and to install several tons of decomposed granite to my backyard. After meeting with several contractors and receiving bids I selected American/Desert Chrome Landscaping. They were not the low bidder but clearly understood what I wanted and communicated their plans to accomplish the task. They provided samples, technical support and expert advise on our project. They selected the best plans, made suggestions as to placement and installed the irrigation needed. They were prompt, workmanlike and cleaned up daily before they left the premises. We are extremely pleased with their work and would recommend them.

Shawn of Aquavets was very responsive to a call. I had a drip system emergency and he was able to come over with his team right away and deal with it. We then made plans for him to inspect the whole drip system and make a series of changes. He completed this work. He was punctual, professional, and had a hard working team. I like his work so much that I have asked him to maintain my system on a regular basis as well as fertilize and prune my plants. Sheila

Asked questions designed to understand what I wanted to have in my landscape and then provided ideas about how to achieve that. He listened and then made recommendations about plants and "features" such as boulders and yard art that would create interest and color in a small, blah patio. He responded quickly to my request and performed the work right away. I am pleased with the work and am looking forward to enjoying my new patio!

I was referred ton Ron by the company "wegottaguy" to move an overhead lighting fixture. He promptly came out to give me an estimate. He was very professional, was quick to get the job scheduled, and charged me a very reasonable price. When the actual technicians came out to perform the work, they were also very professional and provided me with an alternate solution that not only saved me money but would look better than the previously planned installation. They got the job done quickly and cleaned up after themselves. I would highly recommend Ron and company for any electrical work.

James was great to work with. He landscaped our back yard. His goal was for us to be happy, not to insist that this plant needs to be here, etc. The yard looks fantastic. His teenage boys worked with him. They were pleasant, friendly, polite and very hard workers. We are going to landscape the front yard in the fall and will definitely use James for that job.

As the owner of Perfection Landscaping, Ray personally bid and oversaw every detail of our sizable project. The scale of our job took a crew of 4-6 men 7 days to complete. Now done, Ray has held two quality reviews to assure that the job is “Perfection” in our eyes too. Prior to contracting this company, we received no less than 5 other bids, two from unlicensed crews. Without haggling, Perfection had the best price, comprehensive plan and provided a contract within 1 day of request. As an indicator of Perfection’s quality, both our adjoining neighbors have subsequently contracted with Ray as well. Due to the value of his team’s work, I feel like we were fortunate enough to contract Perfection at the foundation of what is poised to become a premier landscaping company here in the Southwest. 1,800SqFt Custom Pavers 1,000SqFt Sod 200ft retaining wall Irrigation Sollos Lighting Plants Boulders rocks

Chris is truly "the best". And, I consider myself to be a very picky person. My husband and I feel incredibly lucky to have him taking care of our plants. I have learned so much from him about triming for the health of the tree/plant and so much more. Chris is always prompt, professional, trustworthy and a joy to talk to. He is a real "find". :)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
