Moved our sectional sofa, which was a tight fit through the front door, but no damage to the decorative metal screen door. Moved a computer desk from 2nd floor very carefully, avoiding framed art on the walls. Perfect service in every way. They may find a place to donate the desk to (it was too scratched for Goodwill) and we thought that was great.

Arrived promptly, was pleasant and friendly. Gave me options between a high end repair and an economic repair. I appreciated that. I will use him again for plumbing or other household/handyman work.

I had three rooms where a single light was controlled by 3 or 4 switches. I was doing a cosmetic upgrade on the these rooms, but my employee was unable to make the lights work properly after changing the switches to newer Levitron switches. Your technician worked steadily and very carefully to successfully complete the repair. The work took longer than he expected, but he only charged me his original estimated fee. He was very helpful. I would want to hire him again.

We have just listed our house, and I'm due to have my new baby at any time now. Mabeth fitted us in her schedule immediately. She and her husband arrived 10 minutes early and went straight to work. They worked long and hard and exceeded our expectations, even cleaning our windows, inside and out! When done, our house was spotless and smelled wonderful. They were very pleasant and quite proficient. We are continuing to use them. We researched many cleaning services, and her price was very reasonable.

I originally hired Ociel to do some cleanup on my yard so I could do sod installation... it ended up being a bigger project than I thought so I asked Ociel if he could do the installation. It took a while because I didn't need very much sod for my small yard, and the home improvement stores kept being bought out by big companies, but we finally got some. He did a great job!! I was worried about it not taking root because of the heat but it looks so good. I will definitely be using Ociel in the future.

Oscar installed an exterior door on our guest house. He came the very day we contacted him via Thumbtack, purchased the supplies, and completed the installation within a few hours. The finished product looked good, and the price was reasonable.

Rain damage caused interior damage in the bedroom. Nick was able to diagnose the problem which has been misdiagnosed in a previous repair, causing extensive water damage in the wall and window framing. He had to reframe the window and repair interior and exterior walls. He also corrected the problem that created the damage. He did an excellent job at a reasonable price.

Repair and resurface roof; find and repair leaks; repair interior water damage. Very high quality and professional work; fair price; courteous, prompt service. I learned a lesson which is, it's much better to work with a truly professional company, rather than with low cost, non-professionals. I recommend this company very highly.

The window installation took longer than initially estimated, but the windows were excellent quality and the craftsmanship was great. The team overall was professional and kept us in the loop at each stage of the project. We were so impressed that we immediately re-hired for a deck sealing project. We would definitely work with them again!

Jimmy did a great job on our wall repair. His rate was the best and he was able to help us ASAP. He cleaned up on our side of the wall, and went to our neighbor’s house too to make sure everything was clean on their side as well. We were very pleased and will definitely utilize him in the future! Thanks Jimmy!

Formerly GA Wood Concepts, this Master Woodman was seriously missed upon his relocation to AZ. His tasks requested (Antique Bed Repair & Refinishing, Entertainment Case Reconstructed, and Office Bookshelf & Drawers Renovation) were beginning to grow to even more personalized projects that made our house more of a home. He was truly missed. A good wood-craftperson is very hard to find.

Tom has done a kitchen counter replacement which involved removing the old counter, cutting down the bar-height portion and preparing the space for the installers of the new countertop. He moved electric outlets, repaired walls, is building a shelf in one of the walls and will install the new sink, faucet and garbage disposal. So far we are very happy with the work Tom has completed. He has kept the area as clean as possible while doing very dusty demolition work. He has been timely, helpful and trustworthy with everything so far. And his work is excellent.

I found Arash to be extremely helpful and courteous in trying to fit my repairs/adjustments to install a wall oven as well as installing a new drop-in cooktop that required re-cutting my slab granite counter top. He had to come twice to move an electrical junction box for the wall oven since the installer did not tell us exactly where it needed to go! Very reasonable rate to re-cut my granite which required several cuts as I was going from a 30" cooktop to 36". Messy work, but he got the job done. I would hire again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
