Dr. McGrail helped me live my best life. I started seeing him because I was suffering from severe anxiety and I wanted to see if hypnosis would help. Nothing else was helping, not exercise, not medication, and not cognitive behavioral therepy, not for me anyways. I was skeptical because I didn’t know much about hypnotherapy, but i was desperately searching for help and something in the universe called me to Dr. McGrail. When we first started, I had relentless anxious thoughts, PTSD, and generalized anxiety. Every moment of my life was anxious, even in my sleep with nightmares. I had suicidal thoughts and fantasies because i just couldn’t see a way out of my anxiety. I started making progress after the 1st session, but after the 4th session i was on my way to being a new person. I could relax again at home. I had moments of peace and calm that i hadn’t had in over two years. I could enjoy my time with friends and family and be present instead of being in my own thoughts. I could see a new life for myself. I regained my hope. Once I could see the possibility for peace inside myself, things started to change quickly. I more peace and happiness inside me than i could have imagined when i started. I continue to use what i have learned from him even a year later. I can truly say that i am back to being myself and i feel renewed. No longer weighed down and held back by my anxiety. I am more confident and moving my career forward. Even taking chances and opportunities that would have scared me away before. For as long as i can remember, whenever i had a wish to make (on a star or dandelion), i wished to be happy. Now i do not have to make that wish, i already have it The work that we did together saved my life. I am so grateful for Dr. McGrail and the transformation he guided me through.

I never thought hypnotherapy was for me. I'm just not that "type" of person who believed in things like that. However- I was convinced to at least give it a try. And even though I was skeptical- I have to admit it worked! I haven't found anyone else who can do it quite like Phyllis. She not only gives you therapy, she also supports you outside of sessions as well. Its been two years since I started with her, and I still am feeling the effects her healing has had on me! I am so thankful that I gave hypnotherapy with Body Mind Imaging a chance. It has changed my life in positive ways that I am still discovering! Just try it! Trust me! Don't waste your time with other people pretending to be "healers" while just reaching for your wallet. Go for the best the first time!

Having been a client in both types of therapy, I can honestly say the progress and healing I have been able to attain in the last eight months took years for me to achieve through psychological therapy. Elise is a kind and gentle person. Her realness reflects on a person like a mirror, making it so you have no other option than to be real with yourself. Elise is very genuine in her approach, she never makes you feel like your issues may be insignificant or overwhelming. She is authentically interested in the well being and care of her clients. Every action she takes is to create a place of safety and comfort for people to lower their walls and learn to create healthy boundaries. She always seems to ask the right questions without making one feel defensive or angry. It is actually the contrary, they are very thought provoking and getting to the answer is very freeing. She has my highest recommendation!

The work I'm doing with Richard at Advantage Hypnosis is proving to be an exteremely effective means of removing my subconscious stumbling blocks! I had a treatment before my performing in my last show to relax me and keep me present on stage, and the number one compliment I received was how incredibly "poised and confident" I seemed! I think everyone can benefit from this type of treatment no matter what your blocks are.

Jada took me through a past life regression. I don't have a talent for hypnosis so putting me under is very difficult, but Jada's soothing voice did the trick. A few weeks later I went to a past life regression with a clairvoyant who described to me a very specific scene which matched, almost identically, the scene which I described while under hypnosis with Jada. Jada is down to Earth, open minded, and also very mindful of her clients and I'd recommend her to anyone interested in hypnosis and/or past life regression

I was helped to manage anxiety tied to having to take a very important test. Mrs. Rodriguez was great, helped me stay calm and collected and focus on my test. Only bad thing was that I didn't have more time, I was very relaxed but my time was limited. I greatly recommend hypnotherapy to help deal with a variety of issues. The mind is a powerful thing.

When I first went to see Julia, I was on medication for my anxiety. Her compassionate dialogue with me and professional advice helped me to work through my issues and live a life that I now look forward to. The hypnosis helped me immensely to let go of past co-dependent habits. It was very non-invasive and it actually helped me to relax more. I highly recommend Therapy under hypnosis with Julia Lyubchenko.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

        • Irritable bowel syndrome
        • Tension headaches
        • Alopecia areata
        • Asthma
        • Phobias
        • Insomnia
        • Addictions
        • Bedwetting
        • Fibromyalgia
        • Labor and delivery
        • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
        • Stress
        • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
        • Cancer-related pain
        • Weight loss
        • Eating disorders
        • Warts
        • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
        • Post-traumatic stress disorder
        • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
