Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

First and foremost the estimate I was given was way under. My estimate was $149 I ended up paying $250. The cleaning done was not worth $250.00. There were several areas through out the house that weren’t completely cleaned. All floors were cleaned with water only. They didn’t smell clean. Master bathroom sink was not cleaned around towards the faucet. The toasting machine in the kitchen smelled of cleaning fluid. It’s known not to use cleaning fluid in a toaster machine. None of the wooden furniture were polished with pledge. I’m sorry but the cleaning done was not worth $250.00. Therefore I will not be using your services again.

Evergreen Maid had some scheduling issues initially as would any company right before CNY, but was able to quickly get us a team of 3 to clean our home. The team headed by Graciela listened well to directions and cleaned the house spotlessly. The house is newly built in 2021, so there's not much to "deep clean" at all, however, they did a great job wiping down all surfaces on the first floor including the marble staircase, countertops, main kitchen island, wok kitchen, gym area, and two bathrooms downstairs. They cleaned any visible stains on the marble floors, vacuumed areas that had rugs, and organized some of the clutter we had in the bar area as well as on the coffee table. Although the house is quite large, and we did not have them clean any of the 4 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs, they were efficient and worked well as a team. Graciela and team did a fantastic job, had a great attitude, and we look forward to their next visit. Well done!

I hired Perfect Day Maid given their good reviews, reasonable pricing, and availability compared to 6 or 7 other cleaning companies on Thumbtack. What I booked was for 5 hours of cleaning to move into my brand new (2022 construction) home. What I didn’t know was that there are different packages, and I had specified in my inquiry and after talking on the phone with the Customer Service REP (CSR) a few times prior to hiring that I wanted all surfaces to be cleaned, including counters, bar tops, shelves, kitchen cabinets, wok kitchen cabinets and shelves, closets, and anything that our baby could touch. My wife and I were also experiencing sever allergies while in the house, so we knew we had to clean it before move-in. We specifically hired Perfect Day Maid because they mentioned they could also clean couches too (new and included in our home purchase). Because the house was new, there’s not any grime or grease to clean from the kitchens, and the floors are brand new. Most of the areas just needed a wipe down, and that was what we told the Customer Service Rep. We had not moved in yet, but we had our bed and would be sleeping there the night after Perfect Day Maid’s service. So we hired Perfect Day Maid, instructed them to use only our microfiber towels and cleaning products as we have a baby, and keep the microfiber towels only for our house to use. Little did we know, they completed the job, and also took our microfiber towels. Not a big deal, but 20 or so towels were used, so we at least felt like our house was decently cleaned. It smelled great, and looked great..on the surface, even though they finished in 2.5 hours of what we expected to take 5 hours. We were so excited, but what started from excitement ended up in tears, sneezes, and tissues used from all the dust and construction debris that still remained the night of our arrival to our brand new house (more details below). We specifically instructed them to clean all the surfaces, clean up the couches (we had no idea who sat on them or how clean they were (purchased new with the house), wipe down all surfaces within the cabinets, shelves and closets. Upon inspection later that night, the table tops, counters were cleaned to some good degree, however, none of the closets were wiped down. I spent 2 hours later that evening wiping down all the closet spaces in our master, the shelves and closet doors as well to find out that none of it had been cleaned at all. I spent another 3 hours the next day re-wiping the kitchen cabinets, kitchen shelves, and all the cabinets and shelves in the wok kitchen. None of it was cleaned either, even though we gave specific instructions that we wanted that done due to all the construction dust that remained after our purchase. We even spent time walking through each area with the team including all the rooms upstairs. Our house is not small, but the job couldve definitely been done by 2 people in the 5 hours they quoted us. They were “done” in 2.5, which makes me wonder what they actually cleaned. I assume mostly the floors, counter tops, bathrooms, office, and kitchen counters. I made a complaint that same night to Perfect Day Maid and was told that was not the package I requested...however my instructions were clear, concise, and I definitely wanted specific areas cleaned. We didn’t even require them to clean the carpets because we had paid a professional carpet cleaning company nearly $800 to clean the brand new carpets in just the 4 rooms of the house, out of pure precaution...or some would say paranoia. Again, we have an 18 month old, and they’re running around touching everything, and putting everything including their hands in their mouth. We felt this was necessary. Given all this, and the clear instructions, we were asked to submit evidence that the areas we spoke of were not cleaned. After sending the insurmountable evidence that we had via pictures and videos and all the wipes and towels I used that were covered in dust and debris, Perfect Day Maid came to a compromise and refunded us partially including some money for the cost of microfiber towels that were taken. Overall, I would hire Perfect Day Maid again, if not given this lack of a thorough clean as their CSR was a decent person and tried to fight for us, even though it did take about a week or so to come to resolution. I suggest being on site when the team is there to clean, although maybe some teams work better independently than others. We just placed too much trust in the cleaners, given our busy schedules. The cleaners were polite and said “ok no problem” to our requests, but probably should have mentioned something if they were cleaning our house based on a specific package, even though we had specific requirements. We have no problem paying more, but what was completed in 2.5 hours of the 5.5 quoted hours of work was not satisfactory. They could have followed our instructions better, and even though we gave them a full walkthrough of the house and each area with specific instructions, it seems there was little more that we could have done. I didn’t want to write this review, but wanted to only warn others to just be careful and be at home if you have specific needs and want to make sure the work is completed to your standards. If I had an opportunity to make it back to our new home (I was just down the street) within the time they “completed” the work, I would have asked them to do a more thorough job and complete the areas that they completely missed (we did not even ask them to do the pool house). Keep in mind, this is just our experience, and while the team as well as the CSR were polite, I would’ve had no problem paying more to just get the work we requested done.
