Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

Ricardo mounted my TV on an extendable wall mount and also hung a heavy mirror on the wall. He showed up on time, prepared and quickly finished the job. He's experience and professional. I have old walls, so he had to drill a second hole in the wall to install the TV, which he patched up without asking. I'll be definitely be calling on Ricardo for jobs in the future - I highly recommend him.

Great work in satisfying what we needed. Especially with the complexities that were discovered (ie. Fire block, frame) in the wall for our tv mount installation. We are pleased.

Sandy did a great job mounting a TV to my wall along with installing a floating shelf. The studs on my wall are steel so he brought a level of expertise necessary to get the job done. Great attitude as well! Would recommend!

The TV mounting installation that was seemingly straightforward turned out to be a challenging task as my house has steel beams inside the walls. Robert found a strong and creative alternative to mounting the TV and did a phenomenal job on the mounting. He is very responsive to emails and a trustworthy handyman. He even came back 30min after the installation was done when he realized he had mistakenly put my tape measure into his toolkit! His pricing was competitive with the other bids I received on thumbtack. Thank you Robert!

Steve installed a complex MantelMount MM340 TV mount for me. He communicated clearly before coming, arrived early, and got the job done handily. It took longer than I think either of us expected, but it's a tricky mount, and in the end looks great on the wall. He wore a mask the entire time and was courteous throughout.

Imed was very at tentative and skilled at mounting my TV. I replaced a 60” with a new LG CX77, and an old Plasma 42” with a new LG CX55. We reused the brackets and Imed helped reinforced the old brackets. He carefully explained every step of the install and was very efficient and professional. I would highly recommend his service to anyone looking to help mount objects to wall. Easily 5+ stars.

The installers came in late and seemed in a lot of rush. I could not communicate directly with the installer because he wasn't comfortable/willing to speak English. But there was another person who helped translate - that and the rush they seemed to be in definitely threw me off. I was misguided on how to center the tv - for an additional cost. Since the mount would end up going on the dry wall and not the stud, I declined which turned out to be great because the mount itself had a way to adjust the tv horizontally. Which I did after they left. Finally, the TV was installed 5 inches higher than I had request. But then they ran away as soon as it was done before I could get a chance to sit and inspect and all. I am not happy. I will just fix it by myself now I guess and will be careful hiring someone on ThubTack.

Jeff arrived here promptly and all my interaction with him were professional. He came well prepared for the job and completed my TV mounting with hidden cables in under 2 hours. He even went the extra bit to spackle around the wire openings he installed in the walls. The job was a little messy which wasn't a big deal but it would have been nice if Jeff could have handled more of the clean-up as part of the work. If you need a TV or media equipment installed Jeff's your guy to make it look great!

Had a tv installed on a shared wall. Was concerned about issues with what was behind the wall, gas lines, water lines etc. Christopher gave a competitive bid for the work. Showed up on time and completed the work efficiently. This is his field of work, he's not moonlighting as a waiter or a something else, this is his profession. You can trust him to complete the work to your satisfaction. A lot of variables exist, but hiring a professional helps eliminate surprises. Have the mount ready, have your wires ready and you will be a happy customer.

Mixed experience here. We hired AMZ and they quoted us a competitive 99$ to do the mounting and assembly. We had a slightly more complex mount (a mount that pulls down above the fireplace) so I even sent them a link to the mount we had purchased to make sure the job could be done. They confirmed everything, and the appointment was made. The technician arrived in the window to do the work. Everything began well, but then the experience deteriorated a little. The technician started putting together our mount. Partway through, he started voicing some concerns about the mount + tv being too heavy, so he needed to check for studs in the wall to do the mounting. He mentioned that he'd need to drill some holes in order to verify this. I gave him permission, so long as he agreed to patch up extra holes if the work couldn't be done, and he said yes. He drilled a single center hole, to which I think he was able to find a stud because he went back to assembling the mount. After assembling the mount a little more, he started asking me why I purchased such a complicated mount. I responded that we wanted one that would pull down from the fireplace. He then started to say that he was only supposed to be there to do a "mounting" and that the mount assembly would not be included. He said that they would need to charge me extra to do this job. This surprised me, as it was mentioned in the appointment confirmation that "the unboxing of a new product is the tech's responsibility". This is also why I had originally sent them the link to the mount. Had they mentioned that there would be an extra price for assembly, I could have put the mount together myself. I told the technician this, and overall it seemed like he was trying to find excuses to get out of doing the install. He went back and forth with the excuse of needing to add a charge for mount assembly, the mount being too heavy, and not being able to find studs. After a bit of debate, I asked him to let me speak with his office/scheduler so we could work this out. He called them, and began to tell them to add an extra cost onto my install for the mount assembly, without even letting me speak to them. I had to remind him that I wanted to speak with them after which he had them call me on my personal device. The little bit of positivity in the midst of all the previous events was that the agent I spoke with on the phone was very friendly and understanding of the situation. They honored the terms of our install that had been quoted, and told me to give them 5-10 mins to resolve this and hung up. After hanging up, the technician just continued with my install. I never got a call back from the office agent but I assume they let him know to continue with my install? The rest of the install was alright, at least they got the job done. I was again slightly confused because the technician pulled out this device that I can only assume was a "stud finder" because he used it to scan for studs on my wall to drill. I'm confused why he needed to drill the extra hole originally and not just use this finder. At the end of the day, there were studs in 5/6 spots that needed the screws, and on the one corner without studs the technician reinforced it with extra screws into the wall so it was overall pretty secure. That being said, he drilled another extra hole here that he didn't end up using, and it was no use getting him to patch it up because he drilled it while the rest of the mount was already on the wall, so it wouldn't be accessible enough to patch it up. I've had no problems with the mount as of yet but as you can see, my experience with this vendor was mixed.

Thudium really went the extra mile. It was unclear whether the cords could be fitted through the wall, but he didn’t give up and figured out a solution. I really wanted a clean look and was so appreciative that he was determined to deliver. The TV mount was also pretty tricky but he’s very experienced and was able to troubleshoot it. Lastly, he took the power strip and installed it onto our wall so the power cords could be cleanly plugged away. I like to think I play keen attention to detail; so the little things really matter to me. I’m happy to say he is equally particular about the details which is really a sign that he knows the craft well. He was also very reasonably priced.
