We used Cazadores for our Startup Weekend. We reserved three meals: a lunch, and two dinners. The Indian buffet was delicious! It catered our vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore needs! Everyone raved about the Indian food! We also received a Mexican taco dinner. Similarly, Evan and his team grilled the meat and had hot tacos with all the fixings! There was even churros filled with caramel and vanilla custard! Bomb!!! Everyone also enjoyed the Chinese food. It was hard to resist!

Working with any caterer can be an overwhelming process, especially when time allocation and budget is tight; and you want everything done right. With "A Plus Catering" I would say to trust the process. Like the line from the movie Shakespeare In Love, "It Will All Work Out In The End" and you and your guest will be extremely happy at the end of the process. Jennine and the staff at "A Plus Catering" are professionals and they will take good care of you and your guest. Her team was extremely courteous and demonstrated a high level of flexibility to meet the needs of my guest. Unlike big party chains, and hotel venues; making the customer happy is Jennine's top priority. So it goes without saying that the food was very good, the serving team was excellent, and if your event calls for a bartender; she got you! And, if there is a problem, call her; she got you! Open communication worked for me. "Peace of Mind" is what you get with "A Plus Catering". Peace of mind that she is there for you and that this is not just a business, but personal to her. I hope this review was helpful for you.

I had a great experience with hiring Kitchenina as our caterers for an event with 40 people. The communication was always prompt, polite and friendly. They did a great job on the day of the event to ensure that the food was delivered on time (despite the traffic/weather conditions) and made my job as the event organizer much easier. I would definitely work with Kitchenina again in the future, and regret that I did not take photos of the food! (Thanks for the brownies as well!)

We were in a bind. It was Tuesday and we were hosting a bridal shower with 40 guests on Saturday. Thumbtack was easy to use and quickly got us in contact with Stephanie. Stephanie was available to speak on the phone that evening, was flexible and creative with the menu, and affordable! The day of the party, Stephanie and her staff member were punctual and professional. Food was plentiful, too. After the luncheon, they helped clean the dishes and pack up the leftovers. Thanks to Stephanie's Catering, our shower was a success!

As a event coordinator I have worked with Steve and the folks at DNL Catering on many special occasions. We have worked together on wedding and baby showers, brunches, wedding receptions, work Christmas parties and anniversary parties. They always provide a menu to your request and the playing of the food is always on beautiful plates and dishes, not aluminum trays. There are always compliments on the foods from the guests. We are always a happy with the selections. Their website makes it easy to browse their menu and I always receive a reply promptly when I submit an event request online. DNL Catering is on my preferred vendor list when I meet with future clients. I have used them in my own home numerous times. They are my 'go to' caterers for any event.

Hi had the pleasure of selecting Chet to prepare a menu and work my Friendsgiving event which was my first time starting a tradition with my friends. From Chet's initial response to my quote request through the end of my event, the services provided were first class! Chet worked with me on my menu and I felt that he truly listened and took my vision into consideration when delivering my sample menu. I was extremely nervous since in the past, I would always be the one to prepare meals for my guest however, this year I wanted to do something different allowing me the opportunity to spend time with my guest instead of slaving in the kitchen. Chet checked in with me a few days prior to my event to confirm final details and then it was show time. He showed up on time as expected with everything needed along with a helper and the magic began. I am very satisfied with the outcome. From the taste and flavors of the food, the presentation, the hospitality Chet and his crew showed my guest, the clean up, to Chet's willingness to do more than expected (setting up tableware and more). A+ to Chet. He will certainly be my go to for future events in need of catering. Well done!

I was hosting an event at my workplace, which was a info session/fundraiser for a planned startup. There were about 25 high profile people in attendance. The planned carterer had to pull out only four days before, and I was desperate. A friend had used Grace for a previous dinner, and recommended her. When I called she was very reassuring and very calm and professional, which helped. She was very professional and easily anticipated all my needs, and provided a quote that was very reasonable. She was also very flexible and able to accomodate our special needs. She handled all the details and on the day of the event, arrived with everything needed, set it up, and ran the event flawlessly. The food was excellent, well-prepared and unique: green salad with ginger orange dressing, southern Indian spice rice, baked tofu, gluten free brownie, burdock fried with beef. Everyone enjoyed it and complimented her. I also found Grace a very pleasant person to work with. I can highly recommend her service.

Matt was very nice and professional at all times. He showed up at the event I booked him for way before the event time to set up and to personally make sure everything was as it should be. He is really the whole gamit when it comes to catering. He obviously takes pride in what he does and it shows. As an events coordinator, he is the type of person I want to work with. I will definitely use him again for my clients events. Sheri A Touch of Class Entertainment

Angela catered my wedding of about 80 people. Her food was amazing. We got the portobello wellington, malfati, and roasted vegetables. The wellington was wonderful, the malfati good, and the vegetables were okay. The garden salad was amazing, and the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, there were issues with the kitchen and her staff was unable to provide food timely. Three tables waited approximately and hour and fifteen after everyone else had received their food. I was disappointed that I hired 4 servers and they had to pull my bartender to serve food. Which left our event in a situation where the event manager had to oversee the bar. Overall the food is really wonderful, but there were some structural issues.

Lucas catered a birthday dinner for a rowdy group of ladies celebrating a birthday, and everything about the experience was great! From initial communication, working out the details (including menu changes at our request), logistics (our party was in a hotel, we were late to the meeting time, etc. but all handled with ease), and of course the food - which was delicious and beautifully presented. Would hire Lucas again in a heartbeat. Thanks again!!

My friend recently celebrated her 50th birthday. Her wish? To have a catered dinner at home where she could relax and enjoy a wonderful evening of food, vino and friends. My decision to go with Rainbow Chefs was the BEST CHOICE! They worked with me to create the menu which the chef cooked to PERFECTION! It was a joy to see the guests "ooohh" and "aahhh" as each dish was brought out...Having Rainbow Chefs prepare, serve and clean up allowed the hostesses (me and my friend) to enjoy the event too! It was truly a magical night...I highly recommend them!

Avocado and Company delivered delicious and gorgeous food and was an absolute pleasure to work with. They catered our wedding this September at The Green Room and it was perfect. I have celiac disease and was nervous about finding a caterer who not only would provide a tasty gluten free menu, but also cared enough to adhere to my strict requirements to avoid cross contamination. We emailed many high end caterers, and each time got response ranging from "no we cannot do a gluten free wedding" to "we can do gluten free food but we are not sure about preventing contamination". Johnny at Avocado & Company immediately responded that they understood exactly what we needed, and had experience catering gluten free events for celiac guests. We had a cocktail style party for 120 guests we are big foodies and eat mostly local, organic food. The style and quality of dishes felt like eating in your favorite local restaurant. Our venue was atypical, being a Victorian townhouse with multiple floors and Johnny walked us through every step, assuring us they could deliver the perfect evening. We crafted a gorgeous menu with him, the we were so pleased with. The whole experience from our initial meeting to the wedding was fantastic, Johnny even took time to give us tips on wedding planning which was well beyond her role as our catering vendor. Our favorite part was the tasting where we actually had time to try all of the amazing food and have a fun evening with their team! The wedding exceeded our expectations, the food and cocktails were perfect, and Johnny and his team handled everything seamlessly throughout the evening. Our guests were blown away and we could not be happier to have worked with Avocado & Company. We look forward to using them for future events.

It what can only be described as a limited and challenging environment, Rainbow Chefs provided a gourmet dinner for my executives that was truly exquisite. Everything about the process was handled well with great communication from Lana. I chose Rainbow Chefs after initial conversations with more than 20 caterers because I was convinced that she was really listening to me. Chef Nicholas created a masterpiece of a dinner that was enjoyed by everybody. It was the highlight of a long day.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
