Rebecca has been more than professional. The resume and cover letter she created has simply amazing. Her use of the industry language (field of Education) and application of my skills to my real-life application, more than exceeded my expectations. She's been easy to reach and promptly replied to my emails and phone calls. She took the time to get to me and my current career goals. She's went above and beyond to reply to me during her vacation, when I was in panic mode about a last minute interview!! I've so pleased with her work that I will refer her to anyone seeking resume/cover letter assistance and am planning to retain her services to help with writing my book. I look forward to our continued work together. Couldn't be happier! Veronica Joy Didelot, M.S.Ed.

Very happy with the copy editing of my book. Mike helped me better understand what my common pitfalls are and greatly improved the readability factor of the document. He was very communicative throughout the process and is well-versed in Scrivener. Looking forward to putting this out in the world!

Our son dropped our Mac Book Pro Laptop and cracked LED/screen. After talking with Cherif, we decided to move forward with repairs. His costs to repair were very good. What a pleasant surprise when we got our laptop back, it was in better condition than when we left it with him. He went the extra mile and cleaned the fan which was covered in dust, he cleaned keyboard. Also, he helped me to order a great case and keyboard cover. I would definitely recommend and we will use again. He has lots of experience and knowledge in other areas.

Jeff was fantastic. He is knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. He met a quick turnaround (10 days) deadline to edit my book for content, structure, and grammar. I would recommend him, and will definitely use him again for future projects! As an author, I was seeking an editor who would work with my voice to bring it out more - not change it. Jeff brought a great balance of clarity and direction, while balancing and polishing my voice - not inserting his. After interviewing two other editors and working with one in the past, this seems a rarer commodity than it sounds. His fees are also comparable to industry competitors, and reasonable. I will definitely use Jeff again for future editing and feedback about my writing!

I needed a personal website to better help promote me as a author and my books. Olivia listened to my needs, and took off from there. She did an OUTSTANDING job bringing my vision to life. I had particular needs with a limited budget, and she was able to turn it into a very professional and inviting social experience for those visiting my site. The layout is simplistic enough for me to update it as needed which is appreciated. For anyone seeking a website to be created for a classy look, look no further than Olivia. She is the woman for the job.

Samantha Giles has worked on many projects for me including small grants, official documents and an in-process e book about food and nutrition that I use in my holistic health coaching practice. Samantha has quick response time and has helped me meet deadlines as well as reframed my words to say what I actually intend with more precision and finesse. I can highly recommend Samantha as an editor with a creative and collaborative approach.

Julian is a thorough editor with a keen eye for detail. He has edited everything from essays to manuscripts for me and has taken my work from good to great. He is proficient at syntactical and grammatical feedback, but he has offered developmental and global insights on my work that ultimately made it publishable. I am always recommending Julian and his writing services to my friends, and I will continue to use Julian for all my writing projects in the future.

As a parent we always are looking for that special instructor who makes a connection with our child and brings out his/her strengths. Coach Mariem is just that. She is always upbeat and enthusiastic when teaching my 12 year old son to box. If you are reading this review and thinking of hiring an instructor, stop looking.... and book a session. I promise, you will be sooo glad you did.

Amy is an essential part of my communications team. I bring all writing projects to her including my first book proposal, website content, my professional bio, and client emails. She always makes sure that my voice is heard and that my style shines through. Amy is especially good at pulling out the important information by asking questions and diving in to what you’re really trying to say.

Darya tutored and advised me throughout my senior year of high school and my first year at college. Having Darya by my side throughout the stress of a year and a half journey has had a significant impact in my life. Although Darya's main responsibility was to tutor me for my Advanced Placement (AP) Literature class, she went above and beyond to what I expected of an English tutor. She helped me find my inner voice as a writer through tutoring me about grammar, organization, and vocabulary. She also helped boost my confidence as an underprivileged Latina studying in the STEM field as a computer science major at the University of California: Santa Cruz. I passed both my AP Government and AP Literature classes and tests which is significant because both required a heavy amount of analytical writing; I graduated high school with honors and with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA), 3.7, at any time of my academic career. One week before I was going to take my SAT for the third time, I mentioned to Darya that I was struggling understanding a large portion of the Math section of the test. To my surprise, she was thoroughly capable skilled in tutoring me in math, along with English. In less than seven days, Darya was able to successfully prepare me for my last SAT test; subsequently, my SAT score improved by more than 100 points. If we had more time to go through the preparation book, I could have further surpassed this amazing progress. Another aspect in which Darya supported me in my college application and preparation process was in guiding me to refine my college essays for both private and public universities: as a result, I was accepted to more than half of the colleges that I applied to. Finally, I am most grateful for Darya and her efforts towards my success because of the high number of scholarships that I received in the second semester of my senior year in high school. Through Darya’s excellent editing and writing abilities, I was able to accumulate more than $200,000 in scholarship rewards from four different organizations. I could never have imagined this much triumph before meeting Darya; without these scholarship awards, I would have been forced to work during my breaks and during school to afford a college education. Now, all that I have to worry about is learning as much as I can while I am at UCSC. On account of my strong achievements in less than a year with Darya, I still utilize the many tips and lessons that she has instilled in me. As a result of this, I excelled in my classes at UCSC with a cumulative GPA of 3.6. Because of my outstanding academic success in the first quarter of college, I was exclusively invited by the university to apply to the College Scholars Program; this two-year program selects 20 students out of about 200 students applying from each college at UCSC to help give them meaningful academic challenges. Not only do I recognize Darya as one of the most significant people in my life because of my solid academic accomplishments, but also due to the genuine passion she holds to be sure that her tutees succeed. As her tutee, she constantly reminded me of my own abilities to encourage my confidence. We are still in contact today which further demonstrates her enthusiasm for her tutees. She is evidently benevolent, motivated, and intelligent, and I highly recommend her tutoring and guidance talents to any student who is fortunate enough to be her tutee.

Due to my diminishing knowledge of English grammar, I searched the Internet for an editor to help navigate the murky byways of periods, commas, verb endings and sentence structure. Thankfully I came upon Steve Dulas, a former copy editor for a local county newspaper in the San Francisco Bay area. I couldn't be more pleased with Steve’s work. Not only does he have a lifetime career in editing and turning out “clean” copy, but I found he also carefully reads for content and offers creative and sometimes just common sense advice to look at vague or weak areas so that the narrative flows and is coherent. This advice is always given as a kind suggestion; Steve is never demeaning or heavy handed. Steve reviewed half of my book (45,000 words) in a timely two week period, sending me one copy with the changes and yet another copy with creative thoughts in specific places. It really was an outstanding job. I can happily give Steve a five star reference and am certain anyone would be as pleased as I was to find him. I plan to use him again.

We recently took over a small publishing company. Rebecca helped us edit and revise one of their books for reprinting. Her experience was invaluable - we learned a lot! She is very detail-oriented and meticulous, and was always on time. I very much enjoyed working with Rebecca and would definitely use her again.

Jackie was able to help me with the typos in my book. I am dyslexic, so I will never be able to catch every typos, but she did and she turned around 272 pages of work in about a week. It was amazing. I have always wanted to get my book on the market, and I couldn't do it without her. She was also able to walk me through the self-publishing, which was another valuable skill that she has. It was great to work with Jackie, and I am writing more and more, so I will use her in the future as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
