**Note: The rate of $60/hour is my adjusted rate for a Virtual Design service. My name is Alyssa Ray and I'm an interior designer that does Residential and Commercial design. I received my training from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and also have a background as a jewelry designer/metalsmith. This is what to expect when working with me as a Virtual Interior Designer: 1. Virtual Consultation (free) As we will be working virtually we will have our consultation via video. This will not only allow us to get to know one another but you will give me a virtual tour of your space. We will discuss your design goals and go over images that reflect your personal taste. 2. Payment I charge for a block of 10 hours at a time in advance. I keep a detailed log of time spent and will share those details with you as the project progresses. As I get near the end of the 10 hours, I will notify you and you can decide if you want to continue at the current pace or slow down the progress. This will allow you to monitor your budget. Tasks will include, creating a 3D model (or a rendering) for your space, sourcing furnishings, sourcing inspiration and images, custom art, meeting with contractors, phone and in-person meetings with you, shopping and the like. I accept Venmo, Cash App, Zelle & Stripe (if you want to use your credit card). I will provide an invoice for you for each payment. 3. Photos I will eventually create a 3D model of your space (assuming we move forward) so I will need three things: (1) Clear photos of the rooms to be designed with measurements (I will walk you through the measurement process). (2) Clear photos of the furniture you will be keeping with measurements. (3) Official floor plan (if available). 4. Design work Should you choose to move forward, once I receive the first payment for a block of 10 hours—along with the signed contract and all of the measurements—I will get to work. I will recreate your space using 3D modeling and will convey my plans and ideas using that format. We will work together via two separate platforms: Pinterest (for imagery) and Trello (for project management). These are both apps that you can easily install on your phone. If this sounds appealing to you, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I look forward to speaking with you! AlyssaSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

Interior designers operate more on the architectural side of building projects. In conjunction with architects, they work on the design of a building or home to best suit the needs of the users or residents. Interior designers are generally experienced in construction and understand how architectural planning works, according to NewSchool of Architecture & Design. And some interior designers will perform the duties of an interior decorator.

Interior decorators, on the other hand, work with fabrics, accessories, furniture, art, colors, textures and materials to make the inside look fashionable and pleasant.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

One of the most courteous interior designer I have ever come across. Despite handling projects for L.A’s who-is-who, she listened to all my ideas and incorporated them perfectly into my project.

Vpr interior ( Vincenza) was very professional and very flexible and helpful for my design needs. She was very patient , polite and timely for all appointments and design deadlines. She was willing to work with my style and budget. The end results was a full design printed out of my house layout and where all the items picked out should go. She also listed where to buy them on-line. If you don't want a full design board she is available for hourly consultations; which I found very helpful.I highly recommend her services.

We hired Kunjan for an interior design project: to help improve our living space without making any major furniture purchases. Kunjan helped us make our apartment feel like home! She is very talented, and was a complete joy to work with. There are a several things that are worth mentioning. 1) She spent time with us, in person and on pinterest, learning what we liked and didn't like. 2) She used everything that we already had to the maximum extent possible. 3) She was great at finding cost-effective things and thinking of cost-effective solutions for what we wanted. 4) She has a really great eye for interior design and color! 5) She clearly and professionally communicated about the budget throughout the time she worked with us. 6) She was extremely committed to our project, and accommodating to our schedules. 7) She is easy going and fun. We are so happy with how our home looks now. I would hire her again in a heartbeat and highly recommend her.

You need Cheryl! We were faced with an unexpected move halfway through the pregnancy of our first child, downsizing from a single family home to an apartment that was half the size. We knew we needed help to shed nearly half our furniture and design our new space. We interviewed multiple interior designers and knew from our first phone call with Cheryl that we wanted to work with her. She is professional, knowledgeable, creative, and easy to talk to. Cheryl was with us every step of the way throughout our move - from coming to our house to help determine what furniture we should take vs. sell, measuring our new space, meeting us for lunches downtown for design planning, joining us on shopping trips to look for new pieces...we could go on and on. She listened carefully to our needs and designed a space that reflected our personality and felt like home. She also ensured our furniture was baby-friendly...something we were not thinking about as clueless, first-time parents. We are so lucky to have found her!

I love my living room with the new drapes and hardware Cheryl helped me with! It's a big room with several windows, and now it looks great. Cheryl was extremely responsive and helpful. I loved being able to look at samples and decide on fabrics and hardware in my own home. In addition to helping me with the specific project we were working on, Cheryl also offered some other helpful tips on how to warm up the room. The whole process was a very positive experience, and I would recommend using Via D'sa Interior Design for anyone who needs some help sprucing up a space.

Working with Kunjan was the best experience I have ever had with an interior designer. If you are contemplating hiring one, HIRE HER. She is the perfect balance of professional, organized and structured along with very creative, playful, kind and fun. Working with her was a complete delight. Not only was she respectful and supportive of our budget for furnishing our entire one-bedroom apartment, but she was diligent at finding us lots of cost-saving opportunities (eg, waiting for holiday sales, using certain coupons, etc) so we finished perfectly within our budget range. She also adapted well to my and my fiancee's styles: both aesthetics for the apartment and working styles for communicating, selecting and ordering all of our furniture. It made working with her efficient and low-stress. We have already recommended her to our friends who are moving to the city and STRONGLY RECOMMEND her to you, too!

Kunjan did an incredible job decorating my entire 1000sq foot condo. She helped choose furniture, artwork, fixtures, and accessories while working with the existing furniture pieces. She created a beautiful, modern, stylish space that brings me joy to come home to every day. She pushed my style boundaries and used color and accessories in ways I never would have considered on my own. I trusted her judgement and am thrilled I did-- the end result was phenomenal. I feel like I live in a home decor magazine cover :) Kunjan spent significant time upfront and during the design process to determine my style preferences and used Pinterest boards to make reviewing options easy for me. She was notably patient throughout, always listening to my feelings and tastes and not becoming frustrated when I was unsure or choosey about purchase decisions. Communication was great because she dedicated time to me, was accommodating of my schedule, and was very responsive to texts and emails. She always knew just the right stores to look for particular pieces, and proactively made economical choices when she could find the same look for less. Overall, I would highly recommend Kunjan for interior design needs and will use her again in the future if I ever need a style refresh!

Working with Vincenza has been a great experience! My husband and I had heard how expensive interior designers were, and how they often just go buy items based on your style. Vincenza, however, has been very affordable, and she only purchases items when we specifically decide that's best. She's been very flexible in that way - she does whatever works best for us. We love that she'll take over when we really don't have a clue, but when we're pretty set on something, she makes it work (unless, in her expert opinion, it really won't work or fit in). We've been really happy that at times, she has had to tell us that some of our choices might not look best, but she then offers alternatives. I think if you need a lot of direction, or just a little, Vinny has a great eye and can work with anyone. We absolutely love the way everything has come together, and we truly could never have done it on our own! Finally, Vincenza has also been very flexible with timing, as we really can't meet before 7 on most days. 100% recommend!
