Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

I have moved several times and I must say this was the best move I have experienced (FYI - I don’t enjoy moving). The team at Smart People were AWESOME!!! They were exactly what the reviews I read said they were. If I EVER move again, I would use them without a second thought.

Southwest movers were on time, hard workers, and communicated well. Price higher than original quote but still extremely reasonable. It cost us just under $1000 to move a almost full truck. Definitely worth not having to move that much stuff ourselves! We recommended them to my parents and they used them as well.

We hired them for a move. We only had furniture to move, but they worked very hard and got the job done with no issues and quickly! We will hire them again and would highly recommend them!

Unprofessional and not courteous. Demands to be paid upfront before even showing up, unlike other moving companies. I ended up cancelling and booked with nicer and more honest moving company, who will not charge me until they show up. I would not recommend.

The move could not have been better. The communication before was efficient. He showed up on time and keep me posted of his ETA along the way. He got the job done quickly and took care that things were protected. His crew was helpful in carrying things as well. Highly recommend him for your moving needs.

JP moving services was absolutely phenomenal. They moved up our date when we needed, came on time, and worked incredibly hard to successfully get our POD loaded within an even shorter time period than we expected. We feel so fortunate and could not have packed our storage without them!

They did not show up. I tried to call, email, and message them and they never responded. Had to hire another mover for tomorrow.

This team was extremely professional, hard working (never took a break til the job was done - literally). They were very thorough, detail oriented, and very respectful of all my belongings and the time spent to complete the project. I HIGHLY recommend them for any future moving projects - I couldn't be more satisfied with my choice!!

They were wonderful! They were very friendly and courteous, taking much of the stress away that comes with moving....they even took it upon themselves to happily fix a previously broken piece of my dresser, and did a great job! The only thing I wished was that they were on time, although understanding the nature of this job I realize can make it difficult to be right on schedule. Perhaps giving a window of time to customers like other various type companies would help. In spite of, I was so pleased I still gave them a 5 star and will soon be using them again....thanks to the both of you!

Mike and Gabe did an awesome multi-stop pickup job for us. They were prompt, very mindful and careful of our furnishings, and extremely accommodating to my many requests (including an extra last minute stop). They’re very professional, friendly and good humored. The extra details I couldn’t help but notice: they REALLY slowed down for the speed bumps, they asked about their shoes coming into our (Asian) home, and even swiftly helped the owners of our first stop reposition a large curio in their garage after we picked up our dining hutch while I put the glass shelves in my car. I’ve had great experiences with a mover before but DMC takes it to a new level. Thanks again for the amazing help!
