Bruce saved the day! He responded quickly to our water heater problem. Within hours of contacting him, the job was done! We appreciated that he was punctual, reliable, worked efficiently, clean, and very knowledgeable. He took time to explain and show us how and why our water heater has failed. He even caught a potential problem that if not tended to, may cause flooding in the house. Overall, we are very satisfied and we highly recommend Bruce!

I called Manny on Tuesday afternoon, he arrived in the evening to assess the problem. He showed up on Wednesday morning early with all material necessary to replace a hot water heater. Was finished in 2 hours and we have hot water once again. Nice guy too.

All In One Plumbing & Drains, Inc. removed and disposed of our old water heater at a $35 charge, they got the permit for us at a $50 charge plus the cost of the permit at City Hall, they picked up and transported the new water heater from Orchard Hardware, around 2 miles at a $35 charge and installed the water heater in around 4 1/2 hours and it passed inspection by the City the next day. Cesar and his apprentice were very courteous and friendly and did a good job and the only complaint I have about their service is the final price. The Thumbtack.com price they advertised online was $225 but the final price turned out to be $700, over 3 times what they advertised. I would have left off one more star in the rating but they are still cheaper than Sears and the other licensed contractors that quoted us prices on Thumbtack. A couple of the handymen on Thumbtack quoted less of a price but there's no guarantee with someone that's not a licensed and bonded contractor. I don't know what these quotes on Thumbtack are based on and I forgot to ask them about it but these people need to be more honest about their final estimates since $225 plus $120 plus the permit price of $47 doesn't equal $700 dollars.

Frank installed a large capacity 75 gal hot water heater into a very tight spot. He did everything great at a reasonable cost. He even had to return with no complaint or cost to solve a recirculating pump problem, so he definitely stands by his services. I will absolutely use him again for my plumbing needs.

Allan was fantastic. He responded quickly and quoted me a very fair price. I liked his honesty. I asked him several questions and his responses were right on target. He came out the same day and checked out my water heater. After a test he confirmed it was the thermocouple that was the issue. He replaced it quickly. He was very neat with his work. He then took the time to show me what he had done and how the unit was now working properly. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a plumber. I will definitely be using his services again.

My water heater needed a new thermocouple. Came over on a Sunday (when he didn't have to), and completed the job quickly (probably less than an hour). Quality of the job looks top notch! Oh, and It doesn't hurt he also seems like a really nice guy! He was easy to talk to and explained what was being done and why it was needed. This will be a contact I will definitely refer to others and I will use again myself!

Had a terrible rumbling in my water heater at the same time each morning. I knew it was not sediment or age. All of the other pros were confused but LA Plumbers immediately asked if my water pressure was too high. It was. The high intake pressure was over heating the water heater at peak times. I knew from watching master plumbing videos on Youtube, my water psi should have been 60 it was 91! John (the plumber) assessed the problem and fixed it for a price less than the average and even threw in some additional work at no cost and showed me how to save on future repairs. He put in a new pressure relief valve and water pressure regulator and showed me how they work. Problem solved. Five stars.

Isidrio is the BEST plumber (and tech) I've worked with. He was very professional, prompt, clean, and offered a very fair price. I've used him to install my water heater, fix a bathroom faucet leak, and he just remodeled by bathroom. It's hard to find people who are not just good at their job but who are also honest. I would recommend Isidrio for any job.

Jesus was timely and good about following up. The best thing was that Jesus gave me 3 different treatment options for my water heater situation. He offered to do the lowest priced treatment; and if it didn't work, give me credit towards the more expensive option. The first treatment worked, saving me about $2,000.

I have hired Kristian for 4 jobs since he was highly referred to me by a coworker. The fact that I have rehired him tells you that my wife and I are very pleased with his work. One of the jobs was fixing our hot water heater that stopped working while we had house guests. He was able to fix the heater within 3 hours of me calling him to ask for his help. His work quality is excellent, he shows up when he says he will, and his price is very reasonable. I recommend him without reservation. Ira

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
