I have been using Noelle for spanish lessons twice a week. I was a complete beginner. Noelle is extremely patient and a pleasure to deal with. She is very encouraging and has an extremely pleasant manner about her. She is very professional and it is readily apparent that she takes great pride in her work and cares very much that you learn the proper way. I would highly recommend her! Ron S

I do not have enough kind words to say about Elsa! She is truly phenomenal in every way -- from her kindness and caring demeanor, to her sincere dedication and commitment to helping me learn Spanish. Right from the start, I knew that Elsa was the right fit: she was, of course, a native Spanish speaker with a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge, but more than that, she had clear plans of the best approach to teach me Spanish based on my prior knowledge level (which was very basic). She always gives extra time to her clients, and thus is extremely generous with her time, hosting us in her home and not stopping until we finish the lesson at hand. Unlike my previous schooling experiences learning Spanish, Elsa personalizes each lesson based on our progress and in ways that are conducive to learning Spanish in everyday life. Her experience teaching Spanish truly shows in each lesson. While there are certainly many Spanish instructors to learn from, Elsa has to be one of the best -- I really recommend choosing her in your journey to learn Spanish. Besides being an excellent teacher, she is truly just a wonderful person -- she is caring, genuine, and altogether an extraordinary teacher to learn Spanish from, with a positive and encouraging attitude at an excellent value. I am grateful for her help so far and look forward to many future lessons with her in the future.

My 10 year old didn't want to go to school anymore! He studies spanish at LEALA and it was really hard for him and also challenging, until he started taking classes with Hilda Rodino!!!! She not only helped him with his tests ( which he did amazing) but also gave him confidence and made spanish fun for him to study. Lucas started enjoying going to his spanish classes and he even improve his relationship with his classmates and teacher!!!! I can't say enough of how grateful i am for having Hilda!!! Lucas loves her and he went twice as week for an hour and in only 2 weeks we saw the change at school and also helped me at home as he stopped complaining about his spanish class. Thank you Hilda!!!!

I have used Skype to take a Spanish class with Leah for few years. Since I do not have a regular work schedule, it is very difficult for me to go to the on site class. Using Skype for Spanish lessons with Leah is a perfect fit for my work schedule. The flexible schedule using Skype has allowed me to continue leaning Spanish. Additionally, I have been able to continue learning Spanish because Leah is a great teacher. She is very patient. Her lesson is very organized and fun. I am a medical professional and Leah is a medical translator and interpreter. She is familiar with many medical terminologies, which allows me to practice and improve my medical Spanish. She also uses various materials such as poems, songs, and videos that help me deepen my understanding about Latino culture. Thank you Leah for being such a great teacher!

Frank is not only a wonderful tutor but person as well. He really cares about his students success. He builds his lessons around how students learn individually and I think that is really important. He tutored me in college level Italian, however, he also teaches Spanish and French of all levels. He made himself available when I had college finals and midterms and I was very grateful. He's willing to give you mock tests and exercises to further develope skills to prepare for an exam or quiz. Would highly recommend him!

Ms. O'Brien has been teaching Spanish to my sons for the past 12 months. Ms. O'Brien is a tremendous professional who always comes well prepared with daily lessons. She also makes the learning process fun by incorporating relevant everyday-life topics into her lesson plans. My sons enjoy their time with Ms. O'Brien, and more importantly, are learning a great deal of Spanish. I highly recommend Ms. O'Brien.

About

I grew up part of my life in Los Angeles, California, and the other part in Merida Yucatan in Mexico. I have taught Spanish both to retirees living in Mexico from United States and Europe and in the United States. This is a side job I do about 8 to 10 hours per week. I am completely fluent in both English and Spanish. I am self-taught in Spanish, and although I am fluent now, when I was young, I had to figure the language out for myself. This gives me an edge that native Spanish speakers don't have. I have always gotten a lot of good feedback from everyone I have tutored in Spanish, and I hope to work with you in the near future!

I'm a recent Berkeley graduate. I have swam all my life, played water polo for Berkeley, and love teaching people how to swim. I don't require minimum or maximum age limits. I'm also a native Spanish speaker. I'm an experienced teacher in both, and can help you reach your goals.

About

I am a bilingual tutor with full "native fluency" in speaking, reading and writing Spanish. I am very good at adjusting the level of instruction to the needs and capabilities of individual clients. I have lots of experience helping people learn a second language at a level that does them "practical good", not just enables them to pass tests. The idea is to get you to be able to understand what is being said when the language is spoken, understand the information being conveyed, and reply in the same language if you so choose. I have been very successful in doing this.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
