Joe Ward and his crew painted the whole exterior of my house. The job included lots of prep and repair work which was all expertly done. They were prompt, efficient, and respectful. When finished, my property was cleaned up and everything put away. My house looks like new! I highly recommend Ward Construction. Thank you Joe!

Joff painted my house this summer and did a wonderful job! He called me back promptly, and was very professional in his estimate and job quote. He was able to work with us on pricing, timing, and colors. We chose a few samples, but ended up not liking any of them. We were able to use Joff's experience and keen artistic eye to get some great feedback and ultimately choose a color (and trim color that he suggested!) that we love. He was friendly, thorough, and hard-working, and we would definitely use him for future projects!

I'm a single woman and have had the need for Clayton' assistance on many levels. He worked 4-6 days a week during June and July at my house in Chico. He made an awesome cement pad (10" X 10") and then built a storage shed on top of it. He dug trenches and installed tubbing/drains and fixed the irrigation for the right side of my yard. My trellis covered with wysteria fell over. Without being asked, Clay cut up the plastic and wood structure and long branches and cut them up into little pieces to fit in the garbage cans. He has incredible intuition. This coupled with his life experiences, he is the best "creative problem solver" I know! Through the entire summer, Clay came on time and communicated with me in plenty of advanced notice if he needed to switch days. He even worked on Saturdays and Sundays. He even fixed my electric reclining chair that quit working. I HIGHLY recommend Clayton LaVigne for any household repairs you may need. If he doesn't feel qualified to fix your house issue, he is honest and will tell you or will bring in a contractor with more experience in a certain area to assist him accomplish the task. It is very important to Clay that his customers are satisfied and happy with his work Don't delay... call Clay TODAY! Lee-Anne Calhoon Chico, CA

The experience we had with Antique Plastering on our stucco project was truly second to none. From the inception of the project to completion, Owner Duane Seltzer delivered on every promise. He made the entire experience pleasant, efficient and easy to understand. I was worried because his quote was much better than a previous quote but in this case I received excellent quality at a good price. Our project was a little different than most. We needed someone to remove wood from the front of our house and replace with stucco to match the rest of the house. This was not an easy task as he would have to connect the new stucco in four places to the old stucco that our builder used on the rest of the house. Duane and his workers removed the old wood in less than a day. They had all the debris cleaned up and made sure there were no nails or anything dangerous left in the yard and driveway that could injure us or puncture a car tire. By the next day he had the exposed area completely lathed and ready for city inspection. It passed with no problem. After they finished the scratch and brown coat he had me water the entire area from top to bottom twice a day to keep the moisture level up which in turn strengthens the brown coat. I was very worried about the replacement window I had previously installed in the front of my house as a different contractor told me I would have to replace again because it would leak if he attempted to stucco around what I had. Duane told me this was not true, he was able to completely seal the window and guaranteed it would not leak after he finished. As I watered, I completely soaked above and around the window so I could be confident it was sealed and it is definitely leak proof. Duane advised us to let the brown coat harden for a few weeks so any cracks that naturally occur would not be visible in the finish coat. When he came back to put on the finish coat, he tinted the stucco to look like the rest of the house. He also perfectly installed a medallion that we special ordered. The results are fantastic, even better than we could have imagined. He not only blended the new stucco with the old stucco but he perfectly matched the texture so our home now looks like it was always 100% stucco. I can honestly say that Duane and his staff are true professionals. They do quality work from start to finish, they clean and organize as they work and he has excellent communication skills, which made us feel comfortable throughout the project. I highly recommend Antique Plastering for any stucco project, big or small.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
