Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Mike is a straight up gentleman. I was dealing with a outdated circuit board with nearly impossible to find parts and Mike went and may it happen over a weekend & was here on Monday to install breakers. He's my go to Electrician from now on. All my future electrical work including changing old outdated power board boxes will be his next to-do list.

San Diegan’s if you’re looking for an electrician I’d like to recommend Aaron Massella! I still have remodeling to do in my house, but needed some lights changed out/new light work installations and some other minor electrical work (outlets/switches replaced) before I have my contractors back to remodel exterior of home and interior rooms. Aaron worked very quickly, professionally and did cleanup as they worked.

All around great service. I had two ceiling fans installed, which had no wiring previously. He knocked them both out in less time than I expected. He also wired the fans to the switch, making the lights on the fan turn on with the switch. Great service, professional, and definitely follows a strict time schedule (arrived ahead of schedule). He has my strongest recommendation for anyone looking for an electrician.

Hired to do the simplest of electrical work (relocate an outlet). I discovered later on that instead of feeding cable through the wall, he fed the high voltage cable through the audio/visual tube for a wall mounted TV (guess he thought I’d never use it). I had to undo all his work to mount my new TV. To add insult to injury he wasted weeks of my time by promising to fix his work, only to put it off with bogus excuses and then ghost entirely. I have yet to find an electrical license to his name in the state of California (closest match is expired). Clearly a DIY-er doing gig work. Lesson learned, never accept low bids, and don’t assume thumbtack only refers licensed electricians.

Overall, I was satisfied with the work done, but am giving a low review because of poor communication issues on behalf of this company and the owner. The first issue occurred when our electrician was an hour late to the job, and didn't notify us until 30 minutes into our scheduled appointment that he would be late. Secondly, I have been in contact with the owner to get the invoice he sent me fixed in a manner that would reflect what I need for my home warranty. For the last 3 weeks, he has completely ignored all my messages and dropped off the face of the earth, leaving me with no help whatsoever. If you would like a company that offers excellent services and good communication skills in order to get everything done correctly, I advise you to look somewhere else.

Ivan was quick to respond to the Thumbtack request for quotes. I was looking for an electrician to do a safety check of my house. His quote was reasonable. He took his time examining the house and answered all our questions. We ask a lot of questions and he was very detailed in his responses verbally and in writing. After the safety check, it was decided that we have quite a bit of items that required power on the same circuit. Ivan suggested that we increase the load in certain rooms to accommodate the power requirement. He offered to purchase all the materials and we would reimburse him. He also re-wired/re-configured recessed lighting in our bathroom to accommodate an LED fixture. Lastly, he replaced some high ceiling recessed lighting flood lamps. Ivan is honest, professional, skilled, punctual, communicative and very polite and kind. I will hire him again to do more work for us (replace strip lighting and replace old switches and install ceiling fans). I recommend Ivan! Wishing the best, Ivan!

Finally a pro I highly recommend!!!! Don’t even think about hiring anyone else, even if their price is cheaper!!! If I could give Aaron and Kristen 10 stars I would. I had a leak in my kitchen faucet in April. I had been working with a contractor who did very shoddy work. Part of the work entailed putting my microwave on its own circuit. It was on the same line as my stove and when I would use the oven and the microwave at the same time, the breaker would pop. The job manager ended up doing the work (not a licensed electrician) and when the microwave was hooked back up, I thought that the job was done correctly. Fast forward a few weeks I had to have another contractor to come out to finish the work the first contractor did not do, including reinstalling my stove. The following day when the work was done, I asked if he could get the stove plugged in and gas line reattached. He said it was done and he would check the breaker box to make sure it was on. The stove still did not work. I called a few electricians for quotes but saw the reviews for Aaron and really wanted to have him take a look as well. His wife Kirsten was wonderful but explained he couldn’t come until the next day. That night I got a call from Aaron and explained the situation to him. He did a bit of troubleshooting over the phone and was honest with me, he may have to get into the wall which would damage part of my new backsplash. I knew it was a possibility and agreed to meet with him the next day. Kristen texted me the next morning to let me know when Aaron would be there. Aaron showed up and explained everything he was doing as he was working. It turns out it was an easy problem to solve. In fact Aaron probably saved my home from catching fire since the contractors had left live, uncovered wires in my walls. Within an hour Aaron cleaned up the mess that they left and got my stove working again. He even trimmed the kick plate that was preventing my stove from sliding in easily. Everything was as clean as it was when he got there. As a Realtor, I am always on the lookout for pros I feel confident in recommending to my clients. Aaron’s name will be at the top of my list. I cannot wait to have him back again to finish projects I have been putting off.

Luke knows what he is doing, and his work ethic and skill show. He was not available as soon as I needed an electrician, so I had a handyman fix a bad outlet. It didn’t get fixed entirely and when Luke was able to take a look, he found that the handyman wired the outlet incorrectly and potentially hazardous. I had several minor jobs to have done, which included: uninstalling the Ring doorbell and reinstalling it at another address, adding a light and switch to a dark pantry, fixing light switches, updating breaker box, moving the chandelier, and adding additional outlets. One of the fixes that helped tremendously were rewiring the kitchen light. When the overhead light was on and the microwave was used, the lights flickered with every power adjustment the microwave used. Luke knew exactly what needed to be done and fixed all the wiring previous occupants messed with. The other fix was installing 9 LED recessed lights in the kitchen and family room area. I almost took them off the list to do, but I’m so glad they are in. What an improvement to the space, and the work was done in a timely manner. Luke ensured the final products were satisfactory. I will definitely contact LTE Electric for all future electrical!

We had purchased light fixtures and bulbs several months ago and just needed an expert to install them. Steve, owner of this company came to our house on a Friday to review the scope of work and sent us a bid within 24 hours. We already had another bid from an electrician but chose Steve because of his great reviews and he was licensed. So important with electrical work! The following Tues, Steve's father Erwin, and coworker Juan Carlos (JC) came and ran electrical to install light sconces in 2 bedrooms that previously had no existing lights. JC was friendly and positive the entire time he was here. He discovered our bulbs did not fit the sconces and one sconce was broken. JC ran to get new bulbs. I had bought these unique sconces on Overstock and the return/replacement was no longer viable. JC scanned our light, ran a program on his phone and found a similar light at HD for me to order as a replacement. So great at problem solving! JC worked really hard to run that new electrical so that the wall only had a nickel size cut. We had anticipated major drywall repairs. Both men worked great as a team and individually. While JC worked on the sconces, Erwin removed and capped off an overhead fan in a bedroom and then started setting up scaffolding to replace our ugly 26 year old dining chandelier (hanging from a 20 ft ceiling) They also replaced an existing 26 year old mini chandelier over our stair case. Both these fixtures now have dimmer switches. This is not a 9-5 work crew. These guys worked until the full job was done. So appreciated! They cleaned up after each job and hauled all the boxes and construction debris to our trash bins. If we need electrical work in the future, they will be the first company we call!
