Dr. Ira was a great officiant for our wedding day. He and I met a few months before the wedding to discuss what we wanted, and he was able to email some vow options that we liked. We went with a very simple ceremony with traditional vows, but Dr. Ira gave a beautiful message before the vows and ring exchange. Many family members complimented us on our officiant and said they wanted to remember the lesson he gave during his message. He was also reasonably priced and arrived in plenty of time for the ceremony. I would recommend him to anyone in the area! We also plan to take advantage of the included counseling session within a year of marriage, which he said he can also do via Skype for those living out of town after the wedding.

We are about to celebrate or 7th anniversary but I can still remember the day like it was yesterday! Mike was very helpful and tailored the premarital counseling to our lifestyle. He listened to us when we asked to keep the ceremony short and sweet. Best of all, he incorporated humorous and meaningful statements that kept our guests interested. If he stilled lived in WA I’d recommend him to all my friends up here.

Murray was very experienced and professional with helping my husband and I get a better understanding of one another. Our relationship was strained over the course of several disagreements on key topics, but Murray helped provide us with some simple but powerful tools in order to work out our problems as a couple. His guidance and fair approach made sure we were both comfortable in speaking our mind. We were able to rebuild trust and repair the damaged foundation of our marriage at the end of Murray's counseling sessions. We would not hesitate to recommend him to a close friend if we saw they were having similar issues.

So far, I've met Charlie for a counseling session 2 times, and will continue, and although Charlie does a lot of weddings, he also counsels. I am seeing him for grief counseling on the loss of my precious husband. I find Charlie sincere, authentic in his faith, good listener, empathetic and easy to talk with. He prayerfully considers his suggestions offered to me. I am hopeful to believe he prays for me and my family to become strengthened, encouraged, and comforted as well. Really appreciate him.

We worked extensively with Pastor Eddie for our premarital counseling. He made us realized that the "engagement" period of a relationship isn't just meant to plan a wedding, it's more importantly meant to plan for your marriage. He equipped us both with the essential tools needed for marriage and for a lifetime of agape love. He covers everything with the couple so you are entering this marriage with no surprises. You review everything from fair fighting, communication, finances, parenting, etc. and how imperative it is to keep God at the center of your life and your marriage. Anyone we talk to who is looking to get engaged or is engaged, we encourage them to definitely do premarital counseling and to contact Pastor Eddie.

The professional advice given me by Deborah Vinall has proved invaluable on many different occasions in my work and ministry with troubled youth and young adults. She demonstrates a keen insight, empathy, and compassion into the complexities of the human experience. Her gentle understanding of the pain and suffering that leads to addictions, cycles of trauma and abuse, balanced with wise goadings towards boundaries and reclaiming ownership of ones life and actions have modeled a beautiful spirit of cooperation and non-judgemental support. Deborah Vinall clearly exudes the maxim of Tamar Counselling Services : "reclaiming wholeness", as she herself creates safe space for persons in any stage of healing to begin their journey towards doing just that!

For me the most exciting thing about my experience with Revelation Counseling is that I am in a completely different place than when I started! Coming to revelation counseling has been one of the best decisions I've ever made for my mental, emotional and overall health. I know that the skills I've learned will last beyond the counseling and will help me get closer to my future and my best self.

    About

Are you worried about your child or teenager? Is he or she struggling socially or academically? Does he isolate in his room with the door shut, or cry more than you would expect? Growing up can be tough these days, and some kids and teens need just a little bit of extra guidance to help them through these years. This is where I can help. I have experience working as a school-based counselor as well as with challenging populations such as children with behavioral issues and on the autism spectrum. I use behavioral modification techniques to help your child improve on social skills, academic struggles, anxiety, overcoming bullying, and coping with major changes in the family, including divorce or any other significant loss such as that of a pet. I am a registered marriage and family therapist intern with a master's degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University. I may be younger than many of the other therapists you have looked into, but that is exactly the reason why I would be a great choice for your child or adolescent. My age helps me relate to and understand your child, which creates a better counseling environment. I am also fluent in Russian. I am available weekday evenings and weekends.

    About

As a marriage and family therapist, I am specifically trained to help those who are experiencing issues with relationships. Are you in a romantic relationship that is in need of attention? Are you having difficulty dealing with your family members or even your children? I can help! I am specializing in couples counseling, individual counseling and family counseling.

    About

    (1) I am a solution-focused psychotherapist who is an excellent listener. (2) I tailor each of my clients' treatment plans based on their individual needs. (3) I am empathetic, treat my clients with dignity and respect, and practice cutting-edge treatments that are safe, painless, lasting and complete.

    About

When talking to a good friend is no longer enough, turn to over 30 years of proven experience. I am a licensed clinical social worker or LCSW and a licensed marriage and family therapist or LMFT. I am practicing psychotherapy, couples and family counseling, divorce mediation and divorce coaching in Newport Beach. I have been helping people find a better way to meet life's challenges for over 30 years in private practice. I offer solution-focused counseling, using the best of traditional psychotherapy, along with more contemporary techniques. Over the years, I have found that one size does not fit all. I choose instead to tailor my counseling techniques to the unique individual and situation in front of me, because no two people or their problems are exactly alike. My goal for you is to provide a safe environment to create possibility for change. Everyone experiences emotional pain at times. However, when the stress becomes especially severe, whether it takes the form of persistent sadness, depression, anxiety, confusion, procrastination or career problems, it is time to think about seeking professional help. Relationship problems, whether you are in one or having difficulty forming one, can also be a major source of emotional distress. External factors, which can't be avoided in life, sometimes combine with internal issues causing intense discomfort, which may feel confusing. I will help you to identify the areas of your life needing adjustment, and assist you with a plan for improvement. I will provide the tools and personal support every step of the way, while creating a structure that enables you to become your own best advisor. I give results not regrets!

    About

I am very flexible and available to talk evenings as well. I am very empathetic and actually care what they are going through and want to be, if anything, a catalyst to help them move forward in their healing journey.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
