I have a few rental houses, I can always depend on David to give me quality work and a fair price. What I appreciate most is his diversity, it is rare to find an individual that I would trust in my personal home as well as my rentals. I need to rely on someone who can do many things, electrical, plumbing, drywall, building decks, & roofing you name it he can do it. I've had a working relationship with David for over 20 years. He does a great job! I've posted a large tile job he did for me a few years back and it still is in Great shape. David laid a wood floor in my home as well. I've received many compliments on how beautiful it is. Strongly recommend him!

Darrin came and literally saved the day. I was getting quotes for THOUSANDS of dollars for the project I had and was becoming so discouraged. Long story short, we were completely HOSED by our contractor, found ourselves out of money and only 60% through a total house remodel (that we were living in) GREAT. Darrin came and looked at the very daunting job (a solid 1500 sqft of drywall to patch and texture, at least). He admitted it was a big job but took it on head strong. I was very impressed with his work ethic and work quality. He finished the job by himself within 5 days. I was ecstatic. I definitely recommend him!

Sean installed two new bathroom ceiling vent fans for me, and removed the old existing fans that were not working any more. Sean is a superb craftsman and takes pride in his work! He has the utmost concern for his customers' satisfaction, and I can say he went above and beyond my expectations. He arrived promptly, communicated extremely well with me before, during and after the work was completed. He is honest and does not push you for any unnecessary work. Sean is a total professional and extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of electrical, drywall, and carpentry repairs. I am extremely happy with the job Sean did and I highly recommend him for any work you need done!!!!

I hired Kent to refinish my kitchen cabinets that were originally built in 1969 and were in overall good structural condition but completely lacked aesthetics on the outside. Since the cabinets were so old, they of course did not have hidden or soft close hinges which I was really hoping to be able to achieve with the kitchen remodel. I had other contractors come in and tell me that I would have to live with the outdated cheap hinges as they would not be able to configure new doors and drawers with hidden hinges and that's where the amazing Kent Merrill comes in. Not only did Kent do an amazing job at refinishing the exterior of the cabinet boxes, the new doors and drawers faces, but he was able to install new soft close glides for the drawers and wait for it........hidden soft close hinges. A miracle in its self, but not for Kent, he is truly a master of kitchen cabinet makeovers. I cannot speak highly enough of his skill set and professionalism. If I ever have another kitchen where the cabinets need to be redone, I will not think twice about going with anyone but Kent.

I hired Cheryl through Thumbtack in Feb 2015 to fully renovate a 1700sqft home in what we thought would be a quick two months. First and foremost, she's a fantastic designer - she understands color, is particular about details, and can visualize what a space should feel like. Different times of the day, different seasons of the year ... she thought through it all and got the right combination of lighting, windows, and heating/cooling to get it right. In ADDITION to that designer's touch, Cheryl is a tiger of a General Contractor. I really can't overstate how much energy and passion she put into the project getting bids from subcontractors, managing and directing her own crew, and fighting to keep everything on schedule. I felt entirely comfortable letting her pick fixtures and finishes, which lessened the load on my shoulders. And, from an owner's perspective, the way she documented every dollar spent and provided reports and accounting was beyond anything I've seen anyone else do. It's amazing. In the end, the project did NOT go as expected. After opening walls, we discovered extensive termite damage (which meant some new exterior walls), antiquated electrical, and sub-standard plumbing work. Most other contractors would have walked off the job or taken advantage of the situation. Most other contractors would have taken an additional four months to finish. Cheryl didn't - she poured her whole self into the challenge and worked tirelessly to get the project done. The end product is fabulous and it took only one month longer than originally anticipated. Perhaps most importantly, Cheryl's integrity, "whatever it takes" attitude, and her extremely high Say/Do ratio is a testament to her character. She's the type of person I like to work with, and I'd be delighted to share any details of my experience with anyone who's considering her services.

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

We had issues that arose with our home and Luke was able to tactfully resolve it. We initially hired him to instal bathtubs and float the walls. After meeting Luke, we requested further projects and all was completed with excellent craftsmanship. He did all the necessary permits and paperwork and does everything right. Luke is just what we were looking for and we will certainly call on him for further projects. He is highly recommended and it was a sincere pleasure getting to know him and working with him. I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

So happy! Don’t miss doing business with this company. A total pro, Chuck Dorgan is as honest and trustworthy as they come and has the knowledge and skills in sliding door installation. He and his crew removed my old sliding door and installed a new Pella sliding door within a matter of hours last Saturday, the next day Mr. Dorgan completed the job with a beautiful wood frame around my new sliding door on the inside of my house and adjusted the sliding door and screen so they slide beautifully!! And I might add, he left the work area clean and spotless once he was done. On the outside, his crew did a great job on patching the stucco around the new door. I highly recommend this company for your windows and door replacements. Chuck Dorgan cares about customers, and will recommend the best solution for a fair price without sacrificing quality! Thank you to Dorgan's Remodeling Company for a great and superb job! I love my new sliding door! Peggy H.

Michael McGonigle - the general contractor for MTM - exhibits extreme attention to detail. This results in a perfect, super-professional job every single time, no matter what issues the underlying structure may or may not have. For example, in laying the solid Brazilian Cherry wood, my staircase was not square (the two sides were NOT parallel!) and the underlying concrete was not level or even flat! The previous carpet hid those imperfections but with solid wood, but wood doesn't! Michael took the extra time to painstakingly make sure that the new wood precisely fit. And today, I admire the beauty and workmanship every single time I walk on those stairs. Which is quite literally many times, every day. I've seen the work of other contractors. Some are great too, but some definitely seem to think minor imperfections are acceptable. To me, as well as to Michael McGonigle, any imperfection is unacceptable. Whether you are walking on a new floor, or enjoying a newly remodeled kitchen or bath, you don't want to look at flaws every day. With MTM you won't. I've seen Michael's work on a few other sites, as well as every single day in my own house. And it's flawless.

Henry was great to work with from start to finish during our kitchen remodel. We are first time homeowners, and this was the first remodel we had completed. The entire process can seem overwhelming at times, but Henry was always extremely helpful and coached us through it. His crew was excellent. Jaime was impressive with his skillset and attention to detail. He took the time to make sure every step was exactly how we wanted it. We could not be happier with the final product. Everyone who walks into our home is amazed with our new kitchen. I would not hesitate to hire and Amigable again for any future projects at our home.

After purchasing our home in summer 2012, we've been doing a complete reno of the place on and off. We have had 4 different contractor companies work on flooring, painting, kitchen, small bathroom, and, finally, the master bathroom. The last project was done by Remcon Design. Honestly, I've been so disappointed with the previous jobs that the contractors have done on our place that I was very weary and not expecting much from the "new people." However, they sure proved me wrong! Staying in touch and communication with Tarja and Rene were outstanding! All of the concerns were addressed promptly and without any delay. I am very much of an OCD person when it comes down to cleanliness, and they did their best to try and accommodate my pet peeve. The job was done professionally, in a timely manner. Clean site afterwords and pleasant people to deal with! Thank you, Remcon Design, Roy, Tarja, Rene, and others for the wonderful job you did! I shall definitely use your services in the future!

    Ron's Home Remodeling

      About

My name is Ron Schieberl, and I have 30 years of experience running my own construction company. I retired three years ago, but would like to get back into management/remodeling/maintenance at some level, using my skills learned from the last 30 years. I am 60 years old, am in excellent health without limitations, do not drink and have never taken drugs nor smoked. I can pass any background test and do not have a criminal record. Abilities: 1. Read plans 2. Design 3. Have a clean driving record and a nice vehicle and am fully insured 4. I can do all phases of construction. 5. Day-to-day operations 6. People skills and skills managing employees, organizational skills and working within a scheduled time frame and bringing in projects on budget. I work well with people and have a lot of patience. 7. Safety – I wrote my company’s OSHA safety manual and conducted all the tailgate meetings. 8. Efficiency 9. Customer service 10. Working with and scheduling subs 11. Can personally do maintenance of tenant space, property, et cetera 12. Obtaining permits 13. Endless list of people who can work and have construction experience 14. I have a list of subs for any phase of work. 15. I have physically worked most trades throughout my career and still have a complete set of tools for most residential work. I speak Spanish fairly well, especially for construction work. I have great health and strength. 16. I have the computer, internet, texting skills that have to do with this type of work. I love to organize and look for ways to improve things. I have no problem being available 24 hours a day for emergencies. In tenant improvement, I am very understanding of an individual’s complaint and the need to get it fixed, balanced with looking out for the owner and costs to get it done. I take pride in the things I accomplish and don’t settle for mediocrity. 17. I have experience managing either small or very large projects with all of the organizational skills and trade knowledge to get the job done. 18. From all of the years of having a renovation company, I have mastered the ability to work in a person’s home or office, while they are living there, protecting their items, cleaning up makeshift kitchens while work is being performed. I have foot protectors for the work crew. I instructed all of my employees how to operate in a person’s home or office with appropriate behaviour, no smoking, no drinking, no foul language and being conscientious of things around them, safety and leaving things as good or better than they found them, respecting the owner’s privacy and directing questions to the supervisor rather than interacting with the tenants. Experience: 1. Custom homes 2. Additions 3. Remodels 4. Make ready for homes, apartments and commercial properties 5. Commercial project manager and for my latest project, I ran four trades and up to a 75-man crew to convert 170 luxury apartments into time shares for Wyndham in Mission Valley in San Diego 6. I prefer to not live on the property, but will relocate, if necessary, and will consider housing as part of the compensation. 7. I am interested in property management and have experience condo/apartment maintenance, collecting rents, advertising for and interviewing new tenants, showing the properties, serving notices and evictions when needed. When I did this, I lived off site near the units, but I was a phone call away and always answer my phone, texts and emails. 8. I will also consider part time. I presently maintain two commercial buildings in San Diego which take a monthly inspection and doing any maintenance. This results in only a few hours a month. 9. I semi retired in 2007 and have become a specialist, working for developers for code violation corrections. I get the inspectors on our side, take care of the plans and permits, go to any special meetings for project permission and oversee the work to correct the violations and get the owners out of most fines that were attached to the violation. I know all trades in construction and have a thorough knowledge of all codes and exceptions to the codes in the state of California, which are usually tougher than the national codes. I received all of my work by word of mouth from satisfied customers. Some of the projects I have done over the years 1971 to 1978: Work in Europe (England and Holland): A. In London, I renovated a large warehouse to become offices and living quarters in Bromley, Kent. B. In Hollingbourne, England, I replaced dry rot in a 43-room home and oversaw the maintenance of this property and the one in Bromley for a year. C. In Holland, I turned a large farmhouse into a two story commercial property. Work in Europe (Italy): A. I renovated a twenty-seven-room, four-hundred-year old villa on a property called Poggio Secco outside of Grassina (Florence). I was in charge of the project and worked with a 30 to 40-man crew for two years. We installed a heating system that was a copper piping system in concrete floors that heated up the floor itself. We removed over sixty windows and shutter systems form all exterior walls and remade them to match the ones built 100 years ago. We replaced all of the panels and all of the wiring. We replaced all dry rot in the building and replaced hand-hewn beams to match the original. We built a rain catch system for drinking water. We completely replastered all exterior surfaces and had artists repaint murals and window frame vines and family emblems at each window. Gas lines were installed throughout for a propane system and the furnace in the basement. While there, I helped run the cantina and oversaw the harvesting of grapes, olives and fruit trees on the 400 acres that surrounded the villa. B. I spent six months in Rome and built the #4 rated disco in Rome. This was a 10,000-sq.ft. warehouse that we turned into a wine and beer bar and pasta restaurant. I ran this project and had a twenty-man crew I oversaw. C. Numerous other properties were renovated during this time period of 1971 to 1978 in Florence and Portofino over an additional two-and-a-half-year period. These were usually farm houses or animal stalls that we turned into small villas. The reason for this is no new construction was allowed, so if you wanted a new living space, you looked to what was already on a foundation, even if it was a horse barn. I had to work with the Belle Arte in Florence who would come out to inspect the work I did and make sure everything was done properly, down to the right paint color on the newly-built houses, matching what was on the old original houses. Work in Houston, Texas (1978 to 1985 and again in 2009): A. Worked in a cabinet shop as a lead fabricator and became the foreman within a month. B. For five years, I had a shop with a dozen employees, where we built the first mass-produced redwood lattice panels, pre fab gazebos and modular wood decking (my creation) to Sears and most major lumberyards. During this time, I had two companies - Cedar Creations and U.S. Wood. C. Built and remodeled many homes D. Built a mobile home park in Houston, Texas that had 200 spaces, where we began with a dirt lot and made all roads and infrastructures E. Built a 20,000-sq.ft. research facility for A. F. Tubescope Research in Houston, Texas F. In Abilene, Texas, I developed and built a 99-home development. I did all of the permitting and went to the city permitting meetings for approval and development for the project. I built the swimming pool, office, usage room building, all infrastructures. I did privacy fencing and eleven model homes. This was a recent project when I returned to Texas for a year to work for an old employer/developer. This was 2009. Work in Wyoming 2010: A. Reworked pumps and other machinery in six oil wells in Jeffrey City, Wyoming that were drilled in 1929 and only producing one third its potential. We got the six wells up and running to maximum potential and the developer I worked for sold these for millions above his investment. Work in California 1986 to present: A. In 1986, I had the opportunity to relocate to San Diego, California and build three custom homes. Since then, I have built many more custom homes and countless remodels and additions, as well as landscape and hardscape, decks, fencing. B. I converted an apartment complex in Casa de Oro, California into individual condos that sold within a few months of completion. I worked as the main contractor with my crew and numerous subs. Job was done on schedule and within budget. C. I converted two apartment complexes into individual condos, adding a laundry room and second bedroom to each unit. I got all of the permits, licensing, et cetera. I was the supervisor for the contractor/owner of the project. I supervised my own crews and numerous other sub contractors. Job was done ahead of schedule and on budget. Units were luxury units and all sold in less than six months. D. I was the job supervisor building one of the largest Messianic churches in the United States in Calabasas, California. I worked with the crew and subs and obtained all permits and plans. E. I built a water filtration and juice store in Santa Barbara as the first for a chain of stores. This was a $250,000 project, completed in seven weeks and on budget. I did all of the high-tech filtration systems and built a dispensing wall for thirty different juices. F. I was the supervisor on a project converting 171 luxury apartments into Wyndham Timeshares. There was a crew of 48 to 75 people and two shifts. I did four sub contracted trades for the main contractor and owner with Wyndham Timeshares. This was my last commercial project done in 2007 in Mission Hills San Diego, California. G. I built three custom homes for the developer I worked with throughout the years and 27 more luxury homes over a 25-year period for this developer in Texas and California. H. I ran a make-ready, tenant improvement business with Apache Construction for numerous apartment and commercial properties and town home developments for the HOA. I ran this part of the business for five years in San Diego, California. I. I did hundreds of remodel jobs on homes and condos in Texas and California over a thirty-year period. Many of these were done in La Jolla, California. These remodels averaged from $150,000 to $500,000. J. Since 1987, I have had my own business and employees. I ran sales, subs and most phases of the business. K. I worked as an interior designer for many of my customers for whom I built homes and remodeled. This included paint colors, kitchen, bathrooms, wall coverings, flooring, furnishings and art work. Personal information: A. Married forty years, three children and three grandchildren B. I love anything that has to do with the outdoors, hiking, walking, horseback riding. Favorite vacation spots are Mammoth and Colorado and Italy. I have traveled so much in my life, I am ready to stay put for awhile. C. I love to read, listen to music and love to drive. I love road trips.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
