Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Do at least the work out f a regular house cleaner when someone pays for a deep cleaning. Which was not done. Shutters left incomplete dust on n shelf’s not even lightly done let alone cleaned. The list goes on and on.

Ladies, i was looking for a cleaning team for a longest time and changed too many! Cecilia is my choice now because she knows what you mean when you say: I need DEEP cleaning! She came on time, even 20 min earlier, with her own "tools" and chemicals to clean. I had this shower door which nobody could clean, you should see it now ! it is sparkling and clean! Everything in my house is white and gets dirty so fast! including floor boards which no cleaning lady even thought of cleaning, but Cecilia did! I am really happy and i hired her as my regular cleaning lady. Also, i wanted to say she has very kind face and personality that makes it easy to trust her. And they speak good English, so communication is great! Hire her and you will not regret it!

TEE & HIS UNCLE WERE VERY FRIENDLY….BUT “DO NOT” KNOW HOW TO CLEAN. THEY ALSO DO NOT KNOW WHAT CLEANING PRODUCTS WORK ON DIFFERENT SURFACES. THEY “DID NOT” MOVE A RUG ON ANY FLOOR & WHICH LEFT ALL THE DIRT $ GRIME EASILY EXPOSING THEIR INCOMPETENCE/LAZINESS!!!! [THEY FINISHED IN 30-40 MINUTES WHEN THE TWO HOUSEKEEPERS I HAD USED FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS “NEVER FINISHED IN LESS THAN …………..2 - 2 1/2 HOURS!! MY HOUSE IS ONLY 1,600 SQ FT….

Didn’t want to write a review due to how nice these ladies were, but the more I look at the house the more disappointed I am. My fault for not doing a walk through of the home with them before leaving. I scheduled a deep clean and ultimately that isn’t what I got. I was a good basic standard cleaning. They did disclose that they don’t move furniture, so the dust and stuff under the furniture I did expect to still be there, but I didn’t expect them to not lift any items off dressers/ counters/ etc. the tops of all the dressers were still dirty and not wiped down. The tv stand/ counters were wiped down around items. If something was sitting there it was not lifted to dust/ clean under. We still had cobwebs in corners and when floors were vacuumed and mopped chairs/ items on the floor weren’t moved. Everything was just wiped down around existing items. Added on ceiling fan cleaning and baseboards and the ceiling fan in my bedroom wasn’t cleaned because I’m assuming our bed was underneath it. I did ask them before the appointment if items needed to be moved or take out of the house. I was told it would be helpful to move anything off counters but wasn’t necessary. Overall I’m just very dissatisfied with the service because it wasn’t what they described. I would’ve been more than happy to pay more for a real deep cleaning service. Unfortunately I wasted money on a service I could’ve done myself.

Initially, my boyfriend and I were really excited to book with his company because they had five stars and great reviews. Our goal was to have our new house deep cleaned before we move in. We needed someone who would get into the nooks and crannies. Unfortunately, we were extremely dissatisfied with the service quality. The workers showed up 15 minutes late. Many surfaces and light fixtures were left seemingly untouched, there was still mold in the shower, moldy products were left on top of the sink, etc. We requested that the washer and dryer surfaces be cleaned and though we were told they would be, they were not. Our home was cleaned by the previous owners and the house is mostly empty. That being said we were disappointed to be charged $85 for an extra hour because we assumed that two people could finish the mostly empty house in 3 hours. Especially when the services included tidying up bedrooms, making beds, polishing furniture, etc. which they didn’t have to do because there was nothing in the bedrooms. I tried to negotiate with the company about getting the hour for free for the inconvenience of them showing up late & the request was denied. However, we were given a 10% discount in the end in lieu of the service not meeting the standards we were promised. Still would not recommend given the price, lack of cleanliness in easy to reach places, & lack of punctuality.
