My sister told me that "no one remembers the food at a weddings!" However after she had the food of Chef Pete she told my mom, "I was wrong- because people will definitely remember THIS dinner!" Everyone was commenting on how good the food was! We even had a diverse range of dietary restrictions in the crowd. Pete made me feel confident in his catering services from day 1. He was great about calling on the phone and then following up with email for final quote. The food was exceptional especially for a wedding of 80 people! Pete also had great staff who everyone commented on. They had matching outfits and looked very professional. Definitely hire Pete Coleman if you want the wedding dinner of your dreams. Oh and this was all the week of the fires and he was super flexible about last minute changes to our venue and to our date. He was seriously the best. Thank you Chef Pete!

The service personal could not have been better! I hired the company to provide servers for set up the day before my event and then serve and clean up on the day of. And having owned a corporate catering business for 15 years (in the past), I am extremely particular. David and Katrina were personable, really efficient, great to work with and upbeat the entire event. The owner of the company was great about keeping in touch, taking into account my special requests and very communicative.

We were provided with the services of a bartender and food handler/server for our Buffet Celebration for the recent marriage of our daughter and her new husband. We also experienced the set up and co-ordination by "Drew" who worked with me from start to finish in a fantastic, very professional manner. His suggestions and support were generously extended and clearly came from his experience in the business. The two staff members were very experienced, professional, friendly and helpful with suggestions for our guests. No hesitation about highly recommending.

This was my first experience ordering catering service so I wasn't sure what to expect. Debbie did a great job for our group. The food was delicious and plentiful. Debbie worked with some special criteria to make the deliveries to us but was on time and well prepared. Thank you Debbie for the great food and all your hard work!

I found LH Bartending Services on Thumback for our company Christmas party. I got quotes from 5 other companies but they were the most responsive and beat others in pricing. We had about 70 people at the party. Jerremi and his partner arrived early and were very easy and pleasant to work with. The drinks they made were delicious and served quickly. I recommend Liquid Happiness for their professionalism!

Deb makes the most amazing quiche and is such a pleasure to work with. I worked with her when she prepared quiches for our Christmas party at our home. She takes such pride in her quiches and her full service catering and has developed this into an outstanding business. I would recommend her to cater your next event and assure anyone that she delivers the best quiches and excellent services along with her great smiles and laughs.

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

EVERYONE loved the cocktails!! And David! He's friendly, knowledge and can make you a drink consisting of top quality ingredients and the perfect flavor profile based on what you tell him you're looking for. His bar tending services exceeded expectations on all levels. We hope to have him help us again. Our friends were all impressed - so much so they went for cocktails over wine! We provided the ingredients.

Prestige Bartending is AMAZING!!!! After hours of searching for a company that provided a hosted bar service at a fair price, I finally ran across Prestige Bartending. Not only were there prices are reasonable, Victoria the manager was very responsive and sent us a quote immediately. On the day of the event, the two bartenders came on time and were so professional and friendly. We received a lot of compliments on how great they were. If anyone needs a hosted bar with great prices and a professional staff look no further. Thank you guys for making our event so fun and successful.

I actually went a different route with the bar service for my event (for reasons which are not relevant here). However, Vic at Mystical Mint was so professional that I feel compelled to write a review anyway. He was pleasant, attentive to my desires for the event, knowledgeable, flexible, responsive, patient, and ultimately so very gracious when I let him know I’d be going a different direction with my bar service. I can’t speak to the drinks directly, but Vic’s enthusiasm for good work came through in our conversations. So, based on Vic’s professionalism alone, I highly recommend Mystical Mint and expect that you won’t be disappointed.

Dennis is everything an amazing catering should be: responsive, efficient, polite and purveyor of absolutely delicious food! We hired Dennis to cater dinner for a team offsite, and it went over marvelously. He arrived right on time, set up everything without needing much oversight, served up the food to our team, then cleaned up everything himself. All while chatting up our team and with a smile. We will absolutely be hiring him again for future catering events.

Daniel was an amazing caterer. He was extremely prompt and came with most of the catering gear he needed (which is good because I have very few kitchen tools). Our entire group loved the food: cheese/meat course, tuna tartar, couscous, salmon, and tiramisu. It was delicious! And as a bonus, we did not need to clean up :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

We're having our wedding in September 2016 and we would love to find a bartender that can serve drinks for the reception. We want to limit the beer/wine offerings to a few labels and have only two signature cocktails + champagne. Ideally we'd like the bar tender to bring glasses, but it's not a deal breaker if they can't. We'd love to talk through how much space you need, since our venue is limited in space.
