Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Stacey was incredible to work with over 7 or so lessons - she choreographed and taught us the steps to our first dance song with patience and enthusiasm. She took two super beginners who’ve never taken a dance lesson before and made us look and feel amazing! Plus, we’ve discovered we love to dance together and want to continue dancing as a hobby! All thanks to Stacey’s awesome intro to the dancing world. We highly recommend Stacey for beginners or anyone who is nervous for their first dance - you will be in EXCELLENT hands!! You’ll be confidently doing the New Yorker, box step, and double spin in no time :) Thanks Stacey!

Dan was a blessing in our wedding! He helped us designed a beautiful dance using our favorite song in Cantonese and was very good at teaching us all the steps and poses even though we are both beginners. Besides our first dance, Dan also helped teach my wife and her dad their father and daughter dance just one month before our wedding. Dan was patient and encouraging, making these lessons valuable memories to all of us. All of our guests loved our dances and they were the highlights of our small COVID wedding. Dan’s rate is fair and you will definitely not regret working with him!
