Talked to several companies about rodent-proofing (possible removal) and cleaning. Shlomi at ESI was the most professional and informative of those I spoke with and compared to other companies, his seems to be much more thorough and willing to answer a lot of questions. He was very prompt and responsive, showed up on time (they gave me a 2 hour window, but he called to tell me when he'd arrive), did some work after the initial inspection and then returned to complete the job. Unlike other companies (offering rodent services), ESI includes the follow ups in the initial cost so they'll return a few times to make sure the job was done right and that no other entry points remain. I'd recommend ESI and Shlomi for such work as well as furnace maintenance and duct cleaning as well - great team and even better service!

Hired Smart HVAC for furnace blowing cold air. Bajji responded immediately (it was 10pm) and came the next morning punctually at 9pm. Thorough diagnosis (bad wire connection and bad temperature sensor), reasonably priced repair. Would hire again. Very good.

I found out that my furnace stopped working, in some of the rooms I didn't have air coming through. Some of the ducts were broken and open as well. I went through three companies to come to my home to provide me estimate. All three of them told me to replace the furnace and the all 15 ducts. The highest price I was given was 4,000 to replace the furnace and the ducts were 10,000. They were all very high prices. My friend told me to try Thumbtack because they had liked it. I sent a request, and right away Osi sent me an email. I said I would try his company. Sam came to my home, and when he arrived and looked at the furnace, told me he didn't know why people said the furnace needed to be replaced. Only one fan needed to be replaced within the furnace that was only 6 years old. Sam told me only 4 ducts really needed to be replaced and showed me the difference between those and the others, but was honest with me about price and need for 4 ducts being replaced vs 15. I decided to have all ducts changed out because of his honesty. And still, the price was incredibly reasonable! He said he could fix it for me - he went and got the parts and came back the day he promised. He came with his crew and replaced everything - and 25 minutes later my furnace started to work! It only took about 5 hours for 3 guys to fix and replace everything in my home. After, he walked me through and showed me everything after the project was done. THANK YOU SO MUCH. You saved me so much money. I am so happy, he was very honest and I want everyone to know what a great job he did! To all the people that see this - try them first! They are honest and they are worth it! We had a great experience and I highly recommend them! A very excellent company!

Hi. We had an issue with our heating duct (rats had caused the duct to come loose, so hot air was being pumped under the house, not into it (lovely)!. We called S.A.E. and Josh came with i think Paris. they inspected the duct work, and our furnace for the call out fee. they actually performed a repair (temporary) without any additional cost. this shows they were looking out for our well being, and not trying to make $$$. On inspection our furnace was well over 20 years and on its last legs. Josh spent time reviewing various options with us. While we didn't budget for the expense Josh worked with us on the type of furnace, new ducting, and addition of A/C. We did some research outside of S.A.E (e.g. Costco) and the prices were comparable (SAE slightly higher). due to the professionalism, and willingness to work with us, we were happy to pay the slightly higher price to work with a local company. the work was performed quickly, and with minimal disruption. The team were courteous, professional, and showed genuine interest in making sure we were happy. I'd recommend these guys to anyone. we got the Lennox 280 furnace. So far, so good. Josh and team also had to re-wire out thremostat, which they did with no fuss, and importantly they re-painted the well- very nicely. the small things count on projects like this, and as far as we're concerned the job has been done very well.

Max installed the plumbing for washer/dryer hookups in my condo; Hot & cold water hookups with drain pipes, and vents. Max is very courteous & punctual and does top notch work. It was not an easy project due to the location of our washer & dryer but he made it work and did a great job weaving the pipes in the least obstructive manner possible. He was also very busy at the time that I hired him but was able to squeeze me in during some downtime he had while waiting on parts for another project. I would definitely recommend Max & will 100% use him in the future for any of my plumbing needs.

I came to Carlos with what seemed like a straightforward problem. He solved it in the end, and in the process uncovered all sorts of problems that my previous HVAC contractor had left behind. He came out within 24 hours of my initial request to investigate and do a free estimate, and came back to do all of the repairs and improvements today: closing off two ducts that were just blowing into our crawlspace (!), rerouting existing ducts to shorten the distance air has to travel to our bedroom, replacing bent ducts with proper elbows, fixing the cover to the furnace (small work, but nice to reduce a leak), and tuning the dampers to make sure we have airflow to our bedroom. From the beginning, Carlos worked hard to figure out what was really going on with our ducts, and I'm super happy with the results. I can't recommend him more.

Alex offered a very competitive diagnosis fee in the beginning, and clearly outlined what's included with his service (months of warranty, and whether it's insured etc). This made him standout among all the other pros. Turned out it was an easy fix, and we were able to get it all sorted out in less than 15min, and my dryer is up and running again. Overall it took no more than 4 hours from me filing the request to getting it done. Great experience!

Professionally and well executed thru entire process. I got five estimates. A1 was upper middle, but my experience and value of their deliverables justified the price. I would definitely refer them to anyone. FYI my installers were Oscar and William ( very professional/respectful/meticulous), Sales - Jerry, & Brad (COO?). Christina on the phone was helpful as well. They have a good team. Summary of work done: Replaced 48 year old furnace in garage closet shared with water heater. Replaced old ducting. Installed new Trane XV80, 2 stg, 100K BTU, ducting, bubble wrap insulation. Took away all old stuff. $5500 (incl taxes, inspection...). I probably got some discount. All five bids ... lowest 2800$, Highest 7200$, middle were 5000-5500. Great job guys!

Our 35+ year old furnace bit the dust & decided to bid out for a furnace plus AC. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Freedom Heating & AC. We liked the way Jared explained the old HVAC system & comparing it to the benefits of a new system. We were able to schedule the job quickly & planned for a two day install. One day for DEMO & one day for install. So glad went went with Freedom, Jared, Jeff & Brad were really nice guys who take pride in their craft. We have a young child so they tried to keep noise to a minimum. We’re glad we went with AC unit too because it keeps the house nice and cool during this summer heat. Our new thermostat is nice and high tech & the filtration system really cleans out the air well. For a job well done, we received great price & high quality install & a really nice furnace & AC system. Freedom heating and AC are highly recommend by our family. Thank you!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
