I enjoyed working with Marie so much. She's is very patient and has the perfect accent. She makes studying fun and helped me with pronunciation more than other tutors I've had. I felt like I accomplished a lot for the amount of time I spent and would recommend her to anyone looking to make a big improvement in French skills.

Roslyn Raney has worked for the One-to-One Tutoring Service since 2004. She has tutored many students in French, German, and Spanish for our service very successfully. Adults who want to learn a language for travel purposes have been particularly impressed with her ability to teach them what they need to know to be able to converse successfully in the country they are traveling to. She also has tutored numerous high school students as well. I have received many positive comments from clients who worked with Roslyn. She came to our service having taught languages at the college level for a number of years at San Jose State and College of San Mateo.

I hired Veronique to have a conversation with me in French and she's great: easy and fun to talk with, she subtly gave me hints and suggestions on vocabulary and errors, and flexible & patient scheduling & location to meet. I hope to keep meeting with her for some time to sharpen up my French before a trip there later this year.

Yuki is an excellent teacher. I hired Yuki 7 months ago for Japanese lessons and have been studying with her ever since. Not only have I learned more than I expected, I have had fun while doing so. Yuki's ability to answer questions, correct mistakes and push me just enough beyond my comfort zone, all while offering encouragement and instilling confidence, creates an engaging, productive and enjoyable learning environment. In addition to her skill in teaching the language, Yuki shares a wealth of knowledge regarding Japanese culture and current events, regularly weaving this into our lessons. Many aspects of Japanese culture are reflected in how the Japanese language is used. Yuki's ability to blend language learning with cultural insight reinforces my understanding of both and provides a practical and realistic context for my developing language skills. I find this extremely valuable, especially when compared to other language learning experiences that rely primarily on exercises that are contrived and don't reflect how native speakers actually converse. One hallmark of an excellent teacher is their ability to understand and adapt to a student's needs and learning style. Yuki does this extremely well. During our very first lesson, she specifically asked what my motivation and goals are, what experience I've had with the language (if any) and how I like to learn. This was comforting and encouraging, since clearly she wanted to teach me in a way that worked well for me, not simply based on her preferred style of teaching or a "one size fits all" approach. It took me a while to realize that she was continuing to observe and adapt to my learning style months after that first meeting. As an example, I mentioned during a lesson that I was encouraged because I could often understand much of what Yuki would say in Japanese. She responded that she had purposely been speaking at full speed, as native speakers do, because she felt that I had progressed to the point where that was just enough of a challenge to help me learn without being too difficult to be discouraging. I can't remember how we had progressed to that point, but Yuki was clearly keeping track of my progress, where I was getting comfortable and where I was still challenged, and had adapted our lessons over time to what I needed at that moment. I highly recommend Yuki as a language teacher. She cares about her students and applies all of her knowledge and teaching skill toward helping them reach their individual goals. She creates a very supportive and comfortable environment, which is invaluable when learning a language. Her ability to integrate cultural insight and current events adds a depth to her language lessons that is not easy to find and makes her lessons more relevant, practical and engaging. Perhaps most telling of all, I have learned more than I expected and I have had a lot of fun doing it.

Jeffrey is a very accomplished scholar and talented lecturer and tutor. He is attentive to students' needs, genuinely concerned about their development, and invests and unusual level of effort in producing his lessons and lectures. He has a broad range of experience to offer in all types of writing, from professional documents to academic essays. His command of the language and his extensive knowledge of its use and its history give him a particularly nuanced approach to both writing and editing.

Carine is excellent. She listened to my goal for our sessions (oral production) and has made it comfortable for me to converse with her on topics of mutual interest. She corrects when appropriate and provides materials to spark conversation. Reliable and patient. I highly recommend her

About

I offer a joyful learning of French. I am a French instructor who loves my work, and I have taught in the high school and college levels for over 25 years. I am credentialed by the State of California to teach in the community college system, and I have an M.A. in French from UC Berkeley. I emphasize a solid grounding in the workings of the French language, and I aim to bring my students to meaningful self-expression. I've had a lot of success with students who are shy or feel that they don't learn languages easily. Having spoken French since the age of 13, and having lived and studied in France, I speak with a native accent. (As a matter of fact, I particularly enjoy teaching students how to pronounce authentically, and often when they go to France afterwards, the French are a bit floored!) The name of my school is "French with Joy", and in fact, my students feel really at ease, enjoy the classes, and laugh a lot.
