My husband and I needed a company to expand our driveway and adjust/repair sprinklers so we have full coverage because the lawn was dying. I got plenty of bids on this job. DG construction was very reasonable with their prices. David promised me they would start at 7 am the following day. Sure enough right on time the crew arrived at my home. They worked 12 hours straight to get the job done in two days. David went above and beyond to repair this tile that broke from my home and replaced the cylicone around my kitchen sink to prevent leaks. I didn't even ask for his help but he did anyways. This company is very trustworthy and honest. The job was done in a timely manner for the price agreed upon. I am definitely keeping their contact information for any future contractor needs. I highly recommend this company.

One of the best experiences I have had with a graphic designer. I've used FIVERR, ZILLIONDESIGNS, local designers, etc...& NONE delivered what I wanted, in the time that I wanted at the price that I wanted in the time that I wanted. Ahmed delivered on all 3 counts + his work was FAR superior. I would recommend him to ANY & EVERYBODY that values my opinion & taste. Cannot say enough good things about him. Professional, timely, affordable, kind, respectful, & talented. I'm a fan!!

My house was updated and remodeled by APCO. I have worked with a number of contractors. APCO is very different. APCO has Laura and Alan who are very talented designers. Their design ideas turned my house into a showcase - something I could not have imaged on my own. They were honest and dedicated to pleasing me. I highly recommend APCO.

I was the project manager overseeing the reconstruction of the Men’s and Women’s restrooms at First Baptist Church of Indio. Edwin Vela was chosen because of his “can do” attitude and his willingness to work within our limited budget. Our bathrooms were last constructed in early 1970’s. Ed ran into many unforeseen problems, plumbing issues inside and outside of our church. Being a man of integrity, Ed stuck within our budget and tackled these issues on his own. In fact he went beyond that. In an unrelated issue he pointed out obvious water damage in a hallway due to rain; repaired it and gave advice on how to prevent re-occurrence of this issue. The project did go passed scheduled end date. However, it is understood why and welcomed. Ed went beyond his call. Tile, paint, and color schemes were based on his recommendation. We now have commercial bathrooms (both within ADA standards) that have a touch of class. He gave our bathrooms an inviting feel and softness. Ed and his employees were very respectful, easy to work with, and easy to talk to. We are very happy with the results of his work. Vela Construction did a job well done. I recommend them for your construction needs. Sean Strickland Assoc. Min First Baptist Church of Indio.

I was referred to Mark by a friend who hired him to design his house, which I thought was knock out! He has a great eye for balancing all design elements and really knows design. He came up with so many ideas I would never have thought of, I just stopped counting and trusted him to get me the result I was after. My home came out better than I could have dreamed of and its all because I trusted him to be the pro and let him do his thing! You will not be sorry if you choose to work with him.

My son and I had moved from a large home to a much smaller condo. This change was an emotional rollercoaster for me. I had to consolidate a lot of my furniture and just decided that I wanted to start over. The most important spaces were my son's room and my bedroom. I wanted this transition to be as easy as possible for him. After a lot of research online, I found that JC Cross was the most reasonable and I loved that she was timely in responding to me. The process was a little long due to her schedule, but it was worth it because what mattered most was the outcome. Nikoya did a wonderful job with my room. It's exactly what I needed. It feels so good coming home to a room that i feel so comfortable in and that represents me. But my son's room was the best. She gave him storage and created a space that he is so happy in. Sometimes I have to beg him to come eat. He stays in there as much as he can. It's a relief for me that he has joy during this big change for us. It really helped us settle into the new journey our lives are on and Nikoya really cared about us as clients. I highly recommend her!

Kathy was great as an interior decorator. She did a fantastic job helping me. I regret that I had to cut our project short due to unforeseen financial obligations.

About

Mark Nichols is a highly-regarded interior designer located in the epicenter of modernism, Palm Springs, California. He is committed creating refined contemporary interiors, appropriate for the home's architecture and the surrounding natural environment. While many of Mark's designs are less decorative and more architectural, his artistic use of color and texture creates warmth, sophistication, and comfortable live-ability. After receiving his interior design training at UCLA, and following a brief stint as a project manager at a large residential firm, Mark established his own company. Soon, his designs were being published in several of the foremost interior design magazines, including Metropolitan Home, California Home and Design, Palms Springs Life, and LA Times West Magazine. His designs were also featured on HGTV, where he was named one of America's top 10 designers. Metropolitan Home magazine named Mark as one of Generation Next: America's Designers to Watch, calling him, one of the newest nationally emerging interior designers for his modern designs and his abiding commitment to the environment. This interest in sustainability and modernism had inspired Mark to move to the desert in 2003, after experiencing a revelation at a recently refurbished William Cody hotel. Since then, he has been committed to a thoughtful selection of materials to minimize impact and maximize style and functionality. Creating spaces that are ecologically responsible, sophisticated, and contemporary on-time and on the budget are key elements in all of Mark's designs. To that end, he has earned the highest accreditation from the US Green Building Council in sustainable building practices: LEED AP ID+C, and has served as the chair of the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission. Mark finds pleasure not just in the creative aspect of his work, but also in the client relationship and project management of each new design project. Maintaining constant communication with his clients, and ensuring that they feel comfortable with the process is of the utmost importance to Mark, who feels the integrity of his word is the most important tool he has in his kit. Whether you have a residential, multi-unit or commercial design project, Mark would be delighted to create space for you that is environmentally responsible, sophisticated and modern.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
