Carl was referred to us by a very happy, satisfied student. He has been tutoring my Junior daughter in Algebra 2. She has always been challenged in Math and saves all homework till last. Carl has been a "spark" in getting her to not "hate" it so much. He comes prepared, energetic and dedicated to gaining a clear understanding of the topic, while interjecting humor into this very dry subject. Carl has been instrumental in my daughters improved Algebra 2 grade! Hurray!

We started using Mike's services when we switched elementary schools last September. Our son was just beginning Common Core and we wanted to make sure he could keep up with the rest of the class as he is one of the youngest kids. Mike's lessons on basic math skills--such as place value, equations, counting money and telling time--have been an invaluable part of our son's academic success. Mike also makes math fun and interesting for our son--so much so that he looks forward to Mike's visits. He is friendly and knowledgeable and easy to schedule. We want to note that we had tried another tutor last summer. In the 12 weeks we used her (multiple times each week), our son did not progress much at all. That was the main reason we looked around for another tutor. (That and the fact that our son was starting to hate math.) Instead of multiple weekly sessions, it's one weekly in-depth session. Mike's background, skills and experience as a tutor are clearly evident. We highly recommend him.

Daniel tutored me for about 8 weeks, 2-3 times a week for the GRE. He was friendly, knew his stuff, and definitely helped me to remember my high school math from over 5 years ago. Great tutoring experience!

We chose Elite and were so happy we did! My son struggled in math and he needed more support than the school offered. College prep is tough, I couldn't even help him! Haha Well, we called Elite and Eric matched him up with Tony. We liked that Tony came to our house for a free session before I had to commit to ordering sessions. I always wondered how that worked so you know your kid will for sure like the tutor and want to learn! We're very pleased, thanks again.

It was a simple job. Six grade math. Most tutors either gave us the runaround or just didn't call us back. Eric at elite made sure we were satisfied from the first free trial to the session before my daughters test. Very well done

I hired Arbor Tutors to help my daughter with chemistry and math. She ended up with As. Online tutoring works great with these guys as their system is better than what I expected. They were able to help us very quickly. Much better value than other companies

Rachel helped fine tune my mathematic skills. She was patient and went on my pace while working with me. Her challenges were within my zone of proximal development. Each lesson, I acquired a valuable skill. I was able to place into Statistics with her help and I highly recommend her to students who want math tutoring. Her rates are fair and she makes tutoring personal for her student to achieve his goal.

I had really needed a tutor for College Calculus I, and was lost somewhere in the second chapter. I found Club Z, and contacted Mary Beth. She knew exactly which tutor I needed, and I met with him twice a week for an entire semester. I had no teacher, since this was an online course, and Mike, my tutor, had no problem teaching me the material since he knew it very well already, and I ended up getting a great grade in a class that I thought was hopeless. Highly recommend Club Z for any math class up to (and beyond) college level math.

Cindy is an absolute visionary. I am a senior in high school, and I met Cindy a few months before I began this school year. My strengths academically are mainly in reading, writing, social studies, and philosophy, but Cindy has enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for mathematics, science, and my capabilities in problem solving as a whole. When I first met Cindy, I was in desperate need of a math tutor, but what I received was more than I could have ever imagined. Aside from her outstanding mathematical capabilities, Cindy has served as my mentor, ultimate problem solver, entrepreneurial guru, and ultimate inspiration throughout my college prep and application process. As a fellow performer, and actress, Cindy also has helped me explore my passion for theatre, and expand it to become a flourishing intrigue with anthropology, psychology, and motivational speaking. She is literally the reason that I am now travelling as a motivational speaker/ Body Positive facilitator to youth, ranging from middle school to high school. In offering her invaluable time, ambitious mindset, and incredibly compassionate demeanor, she has allowed me to find my true passions, and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Cindy is beyond this world amazing. Whether to call her an angel, an oracle, a goddess, a reincarnated Albert Einstein, or any other form of awe, I am not worthy to concretely say. However, I can attest that Cindy has absolutely changed my vision for myself and the world around me, my societal views and aspirations, as well as having enhanced my mathematical and test taking capabilities. Truly, Cindy is the most wonderful, kind, creative, talented, and intelligent essence, one could ever hope to meet or aspire to become.

Our 2 daughters have been tutored by Badoyen Academics for upper level math and ACT preparations. It has been really important for us to have a female math teacher as a role model for them and she communicates the concepts in a way that the students will understand. Both of my girls did well in math because of her and both of them actually loved math because of her. Our older daughter is currently at Carleton College and the younger one is preparing for her ACTs. I cannot thank her program enough. It brings a little peace of mind to parents! I cannot recommend them enough!!! - Prins Family

I have had both of my children work with Julian over the last two years and it has been the biggest blessing. Not only ia Julian i genius tutor but my kids adore him and he acts as the mentor, and older brother they really needed. Julian got my son in Advance Placement classes in high school and my youngest into the Gifted and Talented Program at his middle school. On top of that he helped my son Jacob with baseball and swimming. I could not be more thankful for Julian and he is worth every dollar and every smile

If you want the best of the best, Todd Frost is the tutor to hire. My sixteen year old son has been struggling with math since middle school. I have literally spent thousand of dollars on tutoring programs that didn't work. I wish I would have found Todd back then, but better late than never. Thanks to Todd, my son is now on track and feels more confident in his current Geometry class.

Amy was AWESOME!!! She was able to help my Freshman bring up her grade in less than 2 weeks time. She was patient and worked well with my daughter. She took her time and stayed longer than she had to. My daughter stated "she is soooo much better at teaching me than my regular math teacher". We are so happy with her and will continue to use her in the future. Thanks Amy!!!!

Edward was a fantastic tutor. My son needed some help in an advanced Calculus course in high school so we hired Edward to help him. Edward came well dressed and well prepared to help. He was cordial, on time, and was very knowledgeable about the material. My son was relieved as he was polite but also very comfortable to talk to. They got along well and my son ended up getting A’s for both semesters in Calculus. I highly recommend Edward and Exclusive Review!

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

Mr. Bert Howard is a wonderful man. I have known him since I was a little girl at the age of seven. I went to a private grade and middle school, which means teachers there are very strict as to how a student performs. He was the tutor that always got me through learning long division and my times tables. Mr. Bert made me realize that algebra, geometry, and trigonometry were not my enemy and that they could be conquered. I was a horrible test-taker by the way. Now this is very difficult for me to divulge, but I was not particularly a "straight-A" student. I had a difficult time due to my mental disability and my medication would give me side effects of confusion and short-term memory loss. Not only was Mr. Howard my tutor, but he was my mentor and advisor. When I did horribly on an exam, for not having enough time to complete it, I really wanted to give up. But he told me "never give up, always finish what you start." He would also say " if you truly want something, go and get it. You just have to really want it." He is one of the people that helped me through high school in order to get into the university I wanted to go to. He is also one of the people who helped shape the person I am today. Due to Mr. Howard's patience all these years, I have now earned my Bachelor's Degree in Biology. I am currently working on my Master's Degree. One day my true dream is to go to Harvard and pursue my Ph.D. in Genetics. Overall, I would like to give Mr. Howard ten stars for helping me all throughout my life. He is the one person I can trust whenever I have a problem. Thank you "Mr. Bert for being a great mentor!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
