FIVE STARS!!! Would have given ten stars if that were an option. Amazing experience, which is rare based on my previous moving experiences with other movers. I only needed one item moved, and when I called around, most all companies had a three (3) hour minimum($300-$400). Not Smooth Movin' Ruben! Ruben was extremely prompt with all communications... when I posted questions on Thumbtack or called him, he replied promptly. He was also very accommodating. I was going to have them pick up a conference table that I was going to purchase in Rocklin, and have it delivered to Roseville. When that didn't come to fruition, I found another conference table (Craigslist) in down town Sacramento (on the third floor in a commercial building). He was more than accommodating with this change AND even more accommodating when the pick up location requested that the conference table be picked up before 7am, after 6pm, or on the weekend. Ruben and his partner were there at 6:30am, in the rain, and even brought their large covered moving truck ( that was not included in the bid: he included it no additional cost!) They disassembled the table, which was then meticulously padded and wrapped, ...called me to advise that they were on their way to the drop off location in Roseville , and professionally delivered and reassembled the conference table paying very close attention to not nick a wall or damage the carpet. Ruben's quote was not enough for the type of service provided. He could have easily charged more, but didn't. Very, very impressed with Smooth Movin' Ruben. Ruben's a hard working man with professionalism, integrity, and a smile. Will definitely refer to others and use again in the future. Job well done!

I needed a last minute mover to bring 48 cases of flooring up to my condo (with stairs). Drew was extremely responsive and more than punctual (he came in earlier since the materials came sooner than I thought). He was able to haul everything within an hr, he worked extremely fast and hard. I definitely recommend him and will hire him again!

The two movers were on time, careful, patient, and polite, and even though the move was only yesterday, I have already recommended them to a friend who is moving soon. I also felt like they were a really good value. I will call them for sure the next time I need either a big or small job.

We caught a clog in our kitchen sink after Thanksgiving and needed an urgent fix. Rolo was super quick to respond: it only took 2 hours from putting my request on Thumbtack to having Rolo and Keith over at the house to take a look at the problem. They worked efficiently and diligently, being careful to check all junctions of our pipe system. After trying everything they could, they figured out that our entire drain pipe from the kitchen was fully clogged because of the material and slope of the pipe and proposed getting it replaced. They showed up the next day and cut through the old pipe and revealed exactly what they had thought all along. They took out the old pipes and replaced it with a brand new ABS system. Rolo and Keith were super professional and polite. They showed up on short notice and on time the next day, cleaned up after themselves, were extremely communicative, and stuck to their fair price. I wish all service pros were like this. I highly recommend working with them.

A great team of guys!! I can not say enough good about Moves made easy. They were quick with responses, answered all my calls and all my questions. They stayed true to their quote and showed up on time and ready to work. It was a hard move with heavy furniture and everything was moved perfectly and not a scratch on any of my mom's things. They were a pleasure to work with and I can not recommend them enough. If your looking for movers this is the only team you will ever need. Great, great guys.

I want to thank Darin and his team with my move. The three of them were very professional and extremely courteous. I had looked into a handful of local movers and Darin won my business by clearly communicating what would be provided in the move and how it would be handled. The care the team took in handling my items wins my business for future moves as well.

I am sorry this is a late review. I moved in November 2014, and Jerome and the Old West Moving crew were the answer to my prayers. They arrived early, and immediately started moving my items (from a house to a smaller apartment upstairs). This was my first time using professional movers, so I was a little apprehensive. I was worried due to the amount of furniture I had, and the time it would take (to avoid getting rained on). Old West moved me and it started to sprinkle right after we were done. I have passed out their business cards to anyone looking for a professional mover, and if I ever need to move again, this will be the first place I call. Thank you Jerome and team!!!

I hired Pat for a move from Fontana, CA to Berkeley, CA. He was incredibly kind and professional from the very beginning. His rate was significantly lower than anyone else. About a week before my move Pat was even able to lower my rate more because he found another customer moving to the same area so he could combine the moves making it cheaper for me. Not only did Pat exceed my expectations financially but he really went above and beyond his duties! I couldn't be present for the move because I had to go out of state for job training so I had to trust him completely to pick up my belongings from Fontana and deliver it all to Berkeley without my supervision. I didn't have the apartment keys to where I was moving in Berkeley so Pat even picked up the keys for me from the rental company and made sure they were delivered to me. I arrived in Berkeley from training an entire month after the move actually took place. I entered my apartment to find my bed already set up by Pat and my boxes organized. Nothing was broken ether which is something that always seems to happen when I hire movers. I have never even met Pat in person because I had to leave for training. I was only able to correspond with him through email and phone calls. For this reason I can say he is extremely trustworthy and I trusted him with all of my belongings. If you need to move then definitely hire Pat. I have moved a lot and I have never had a better moving experience.

Love this company! James is a true professional. He let me know by text every step of the way of our upcoming move and how soon the movers would be there. In today's world, you rarely find the professional conduct, ethics and follow-through like James' company. His workers were friendly, fast and efficient and nothing was damaged. I will use this company again and recommend them highly.

I had 4 pieces of furniture that needed to be assembled quickly. A 1 responded almost as soon as I put up my request and accommodated my day and time. The guys showed up 15 minutes early and went right to work. They were finished in less than 2 hours, did a fabulous job and were very polite and attentive. They also hauled away all the boxes. On top of that, they were very reasonably priced. I could not have asked for more. Thanks so much! I would definitely use your services again! Patricia N, El Dorado Hills

Chris and his crew went above and beyond to meet our needs in a very difficult move for a friend/family member. We needed a last minute move & quick to avoid eviction. They took each challenge that came along in stride ~ putting the customers needs first, while showing a high level of professionalism & respect but also compassion and a sensitivity to the unique situation/needs at hand. Highly recommend this trio (Chris, Dwayne & Mike). They provided not only the manpower but also practical and resourceful solutions, quickly! Can be trusted to help an elderly and/or disabled family member. The price was more than fair, especially as they bent over backwards to please! They care about people and have a high ethical standard in their business dealings. Appreciate these guys!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
